OT: Tigers vs A's 5-13-12 Verlander on the mound
Hopefully the offense gives Verlander support. Anytime you can tune in and see Fielder, Cabrera and Verlander it's a good thing.
My prediction: Our players play like shit, we lose and stupid people blame the HoF manager.
I hope we win though. We're due.
EDIT: Oh and somebody will bitch about how we cut Inge.
I just hope Verlander pitches around Inge, dude is unstoppable
Don't worry, Inge hurt himself picking up a pillow again.
Well that sucks.
A's must be a cheap franchise, the phone lines/equipment in the dugout looks to be from the 70's
that was just quoted when asked about the teams 500 record as "when you're only happy everyother day during the course of a Major league season, thats not too good" and on his career is 1604-1602
Yeah, Leyland is 2 games over 500 on his career.
The winningest manager in the history of MLB (by just under A THOUSAND WINS) has more losses than wins. 3,731 - 3,948. What nobody seems to understand about baseball is you win some and you lose some. It's a long season and an even longer season when guys get hurt or go through down years. It happens. You know why the Braves were so good for so long? Consistency. You don't go changing everything because some dumbass radio moron gets the fans in a frenzy after a few losses. It's not Jims fault. He doesn't hit, throw or catch out there.
"It's not Jims fault. He doesn't hit, throw or catch out there."
So that takes care of the losses. Since he can't hit, throw or catch, how then is he credited with the wins?
In all seriousness, I think the role of a manager is more over-rated in baseball than in any other sport, but I do think he's outcoached on a consistent basis.
Notice how I was able to state my opinion and not refer to anyone who thinks otherwise as a "dumbass moron"?
Second Verlander start in a row where I've got to wait for them to switch to the Tigers game because the previous game ran long. Marlins get a walk-off grand slam off the pride parade float.
$200/season to regularly miss the first inning of a team I don't much like watching this year.
I highly recommend switching to MLB TV its cheaper and you don't have to worry about the issue of other games running long. Plus you always get the Tiger announcers.
Watching the Tigs without Rod is a crime
But got tired of connection problems. I'm sure it's gotten better since then, but it was so frustrating that I'm done with them.
Plus, I've got a big HDTV that I don't run my computer into, so it'd be a waste to watch on laptop vs 52" screen. Still don't always get hi-def games though, comcast sucks that way. Same with Red Wings games. Hockey in lo-def on a hi-def TV is awful.
I do miss Mario and Rod, though. Haven't gotten them very often this year. I think every game of this road trip has been the opposing team's announcers. These guys in Oakland are the worst.
Verlander is a beast.
Geez that is great D by the A's in the 6th
Strong decision there to walk Raburn to load the bases.
I would put that decision right up there with Verlander's decision to give up up a home run with a 1-0 lead
Dirks has had a rough day with men on base, some good AB's in that inning and we only produce 1 run. Oh well, get em JV.
dang Cabrera is playing nice D. I didn't think he could play this well defensively at the hot corner. Gotta tip my cap to Cabby, Leyland and Dombrowski
He's always had the arm, but I never realized how agile he was on his feet (losing 25lbs could help that). He hasn't been amazing defensively but he's been very very solid at the hot corner.
Not sure if I agree with the decision to sit Verlander down. Let's hope it doesn't come back to haunt us. Benoit walks the first guy, of course.
I have no reason to be concerned. Our bullpen is clutch.
/s
Tigers were 77-0 when leading after 7 last season, or some astounding stat like that. This season they have already lost 5 or 6 I think
It's actually 7 this year. Hopefully no more...fingers crossed.
Raburn got his semimonthly hit!
Doesn't bother me that Worth's sac bunt failed, It gives Cabrera a chance to swing the bat
Valverde finishes it off in a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th...Tigers win 3-1!!!
Benoit and Valverde with solid outings, thanks in part to a generous strike zone and some weak Oakland hitters.
Wish the offense would get out of this 2-3 run funk they've been in (save the 10 run thursday night), the starting pitching has been great the past 12 games so that's a trend we'd all like to see continued.
All in all a decent win and another great performance from JV, here's to hoping we've seen Peavy enough to get a few trends going into this Tuesday's game. PS Jacob Turner got promoted to Toledo this week from Lakeland so let's see if his game continues to evolve.
Don't know if the Tigers could have one this one had Inge been available for the A's.
His .131 average is tough to handle. If every hit is a home run we would have been screwed if he got 5 AB's.
Verlander is the one area of importance where Detroit has a clear advantage over Texas and Tampa. He has to be pitching as good or better than his best regular season form in October for this team to do anything. If he is that dominant in games that count, they could surprise some people.
