OT: Tigers Open Thread
Figured I'd start a Tigers thread on this lazy Sunday. Hoping to get out to some patio with a beer in my hand after, but for now I'm watching the game.
A sweep of the Red Sox would cap a great first week. Though there are certainly concerns (ahem bullpen). It's exciting to see guys like McCann, Castellanos, Jones have fast starts. I would not be surprised to see the Tigers surpass expectations if that were to continue and Joe Jimenez gets up here sooner rather than later.
Geez, didn't even catch that. Strange to see a 4-game series so early.
So they will either have a good season or a not-so-good season? I agree with that sentiment.
i consider him the finest hitter in the modern era of baseball. can anyone share the 'why' of his hitless start?
Baseball.
Obvious thing is obvious....he got 2 hits!
He tweeked his back at the end of WBC. Not sure if its lingering.
+1 for a great Simpsons reference.
O Wacking Day, O Wacking Day,
Our sacred snake skull-cracking day.
Always enjoyed that episode, especially the guest appearance and musical entertainment by Barry White.
This game - obviously - has the makings of a bullpen-decided game... With a 1-run lead after 4, you really hope the Tigers can scrap together a couple more runs in the next two innings.
Miggy will come around, but it's nice to see Kinsler off to a good start. Everyone keeps talking about an inevitable slide in his numbers, but the guy seems ageless.
Yeah, the last thing you want to see as a fan of the Detroit Tigers is a bullpen game. Oh the bullpen, nemesis of the Tigers for the last decade.
(yeah, yeah, just game #5 today), the bullpen has been getting lit up so far. Unless things get quickly turned around in the 'pen, it's going to be hard to contend for even a wildcard spot.
The bullpen hinges on Greene, Sanchez, and Jimenez. Everybody else is solid, but those guys could go either way. I think the Tigers know Rondon will never have it, but if by some miracle he turns it around they should be solid all the way through.
It does seem that for the last decade or so, we've had to witness one of two situation from the Tigers bullpen in a good portion of their games (but not all, of course - there have been some nice performances here and there).
1) Something that looks hideous but somehow we manage to pull it out a la Todd Jones or Jose Valverde.
2) A meltdown that started in the mind of the pitcher called, possibly even hours before the actual game.
Jiminez needs to be the real deal. Rondon is unfortunately showing to be too immature. Maybe being eclipsed by Jiminez will open his yes.
Also, couldn't be much happier with first rotation. Boyd got lit up but I'm confident he'll be a serviceable #5 pitcher.
NICHOLAS!
The guy is an idiot who has done everything to lose Brad's trust. Why give him the setup job. He should be mop up duty exclusivery till he shows he isn't complete garbarge.
The bullpen is such garbage
Tigers suck...Oakland rules!!
It's interesting to me that it's so difficult in baseball to find a guy who can pitch well for one inning.
I wonder how much of being a good closer/setup man is psychological.
It's amazing that an organization allows the same problem to destroy their team year after year. There is no reason Rondon should be in the MLB.
WTF?!
Blow the game in a bad way...Good to see Miggy get his first hits of the season. Tigers should be competitive this year.

But I still see the Tigers finishing .500 or slightly above. Missing the playoffs and finishing behind Cleveland and KC. But you never know, they may get hot in August and September and at least grab a wildcard spot?

In 2017. The personification of a million dollar arm and a 10 cent head (on the field; not suggesting any off the field behavior issues). Send him down; let everyone get all excited about his "stuff" when playing inferior competition, and hopefully they will all forget he gets the yips against Major Leaguers. Then trade him.
