OT: Tigers moves: Garcia for Jose Iglasias, per Danny Knobler
It appears the Tigs are involved in a 3 way trade, Avi Garcia goes to Chitown, Peavy goes to Boston, and Jose Iglasias comes to Detroit, per Danny Knobler on Twitter (among others). Iglacias can play SS, 2B, 3B and is hitting 330 in 200+ at bats in the Bigs. Locked in for a while, until 2019.
EDIT: appears Brayan Villarreal is also included, going to Boston
Side note - AP reports Biogenesis suspensions will be announced on Friday, Peralta to accept it.
while everyone has pointed out iglesias minor league BA being .260 has anyone bothered to compare that with Peralta .267 career average in the big leagues?
To bad Garcia goes to a division rival, but I like the sounds of a potential of a young gold glove at SS in the D... The 84' WS MVP was a gold glove SS!!!
It's important to distinguish between the Jhonny Peralta of 2013, the Jhonny Peralta of the last decade, and the Jhonny Peralta of the next five years. Peralta was in the midst of one of his three or four best seasons at the plate. Not only is his career average .267, his .308 avg. this year is higher than his OBP was last year (!). Moreover, Peralta is 31 and lacks the body-type of a Greek god. Barring some future statistical aberration, Peralta was having the best season he'll enjoy over the remainder of his career. In other words, he's a career .267 hitter who in all likelihood isn't even going to hit that well going forward.
I don't think this deal makes the Tigers better this year than they would have been with Peralta--i.e., Peralta's hot bat is worth more than Iglesias' fielding--but all indicators suggest that this is a completely moot point, since he's being suspended for most of the season. Worst case scenerio, I see this as a wash going forward.
Looking at Fangraphs, defensively in 61 major league games (51 as a starter), he's recorded 63 putouts and accumulated 143 assists while committing only 3 errors. That's good for a fielding percentage of 0.986. He's also played some 3B, from the looks of it, so if Cabrera is going to be intermittent for a time, that is another potentially useful facet to this trade.
A majority of his at bats see him putting the ball on the ground (133 ground balls, 59 fly balls, 42 line drives over his career). His BB% is 4.4%, so he doesn't walk much, and his K% is 15.1%. His career OBP to date is 0.333, and his career slugging percentage to date is 0.356, which would make for an OPS of 0.689, if I did that right.
As someone said above, and the numbers seem to bear it out, this is sort of like Ramon Santiago but with some more noise at the plate, something which should be very useful as we head into the last third of the season now.
The Tigers got totally fleeced here. The Red Sox screwed them badly. It was the Tigers who sacrificed a big time prospect to the White Sox so Boston could get Peavy. All they get is a light hitting glove guy at short, which they already have in Santiago. It may be a minor upgrade but certainle not worth Garcia. Awful.
He's rated the #2 prospect in our system. Also rated the best power hitter and best outfield arm.

He's the #74 prospect in baseball, and when you consider how many teams there are, that's a quality prospect.
I could see it if you were saying Garcia will be better in the long term than Tuiasosopo, since Garcia is 22 and Matt T. is 27. But right now? Tui is hitting a legit .301 with a .992 OPS. He draws walks and hits for power, neither of which Garcia has done this year or last. Tui has been legit this year.
I think you're overvaluing Garcia a bit, look at his numbers harder. His walk rate is basically non-existent, his strikeout rate is still high, and his power numbers still haven't progressed the way they should have by now. Now he certainly does have all the tools but the odds of him developing plate discipline and increasing his power numbers are still a stretch and he may never live up to the 5 tool hype.

Porcello has got to be thrilled with this move. When one of your SP is a ground ball specialist, have an elite level defender becomes extremely important.
about Doug Fister. He's just as extreme of a ground ball pitcher as Porcello
Is it just me or is it not that hard to look up an article on Iglesias and figure out how to properly spell his name?
I'm actually not that worried about Peralta's looming suspension because this team has done fine offensively even when he was scuttling a bit. I'm more intrigued to see who on the Rangers, Red Sox, Rays, etc. get pinched as well; I'm guessing at least a couple more big-name players. The name I've read the most about is Cruz on Texas, which would be a huge loss for them.
I don't know if we should be making deadline moves based on the unknown of a possible suspension... and JHONNY has been hitting well, but apparently Iglacias is one of the best defenders in the majors and he is hitting.330 so far (which won't last)... so I am undecided. If JHONNY gets suspended it was a great move, if he doesn't it was a move that gets us a net gain of zero.
See I read that cheeseburger Colon and JHONNY may avoid penalty for some reason.
I think it was Bleacher Report so grains of salt and whatnot, but hey "pretty much a done deal" and "done deal" are different and making a move like this wouldn't net us much if we end up having two SS on the roster. Just my e-pinion.
Wasn't Iggy's value just decided with this trade?
How could he become a "premium" trading chip when he was just value-set at Avi Garcia?
This is not just a move for this season. Jhonny has a club option for next year at a pretty high price, where Iglesias is locked up for several years - they are signing what they consider to be their SS of the future.
If Jhonny's looming suspension wasn't a possibility, DB was going to explore something like this trade in the offseason. The looming suspension just pushed up the timeline and forced the Tigers' hand now. If he's not suspended, you just have the benefit of a really good utility infielder to spell the 3rd, 2nd, and SS positions for the remainder of the season, and have Iglesias locked into a starting SS role next year.
if Peralta doesn't get suspended, we got a great backup for the rest of this year, and the starter for after this season is over. The Tigers weren't planning on re-signing Peralta unless they absolutely had to.
Okay, late to the party but this is a pet peeve of mine and wanted to voice it.
Anytime someone cites "but but he has more errors!" and fails to take range into account, that person is ignoring the fact that he is defensively swallowing up a higher percentages of balls put in play that would effectively be seeing eye singles.
I will take a slight uptick in errors all day for a SS who controls anything from Miggy's left shoulder to second, and still can range out into the grass and make the throw to first. For every error he makes in a Tigers uniform, you are looking at 10 balls that get past Jhonny (and I love Jhonny).
Tigers fans seem to think he sucks at defense but when in reality he is one of the best defensive 3B in the league in a short time with the Tigers. When you have a huge range like Inge/Iglesias, you're bound to get some errors because like you said, they get a high percentage of the balls hit in their area.
This guy may be a better defender than Peralta but not having Peralta's hitting will be missed. I like defense but we still can win the World Series with Peralta at SS.
I think above average hitting and pitching are more important in baseball than great defense. The batting lineup, when everyone is healthy, is stacked with Peralta.
I still think the Tigers will make the playoffs without Jhonny but I hope he will be back for the post season. I'd rather have a .300+ hitter at that point.
They had no room for him at any of the 3 positions...so they basically only gave up prospects to get Peavy. That's not a bad move, they were pretty formidable without him
Peavy gives Boston an extra solid and proven arm for the playoffs if Buchholz doesn't return. Personally think this deal works for everyone.
