OT: Tigers game 5

Submitted by tigers17fan on

Tigers looking to go 5-0 to start the season. Currently in the bottom of the sixth, tied 1-1. Verlander has looked good up until the 5th inning when he gave up a pair of doubles for a run. Hunter with a homer in the 4th for the Tigers only score

I know the enjoyment of such threads is not universal, but the prevailing demographic of this blog (in this case, the location or home area of a significant contingent of its regular users) supports the existence of this thread. You don't have to like it, but I think you have to respect it all the same. Responses such as this one don't help and don't add to the discussion and we may have to start dinging people who do this repeatedly as it is a respect issue.

This is going to get attacked, and that's fine.

I do think it gets to bigger questions, though, about what's thread-worthy and how much it clogs the board.

Do we need a thread for every Tigers game? Probably not.

Do we need a thread announcing the results of every regular season baseball, softball, or lacrosse game? Probably not.

Do these threads, cumulatively, block out a lot of other non-game-thread discussion? Probably.

Basically, it's a matter of critical mass. 162 Tigers game threads, even if in the off-season, is a lot of threads. Are there a lot of people interested in this kind of thing? Probably, but at the end of the day, wading through a lot of this stuff in the right sidebar obscures a lot of other stuff.

your reasoning.  A much better approach than what others have taken in their attacks on various OT threads.

Michigan's Spring Practice ended with the scrimmage yesterday.  That essentially does it for football until August and the beginning of fall practice , other than recruiting and "Hello" threads.

Basketball just ended a week ago, too, and Hockey has been over with for 3 weeks.

I see no harm whatsoever in a daily Detroit Tigers thread, during what essentially is the MGoBlog off-season, for the numerous Tiger fans on this board.  Will there be one each and every day, though?  I highly doubt it, as the Tigers are bound to slump at times in a 162-game season.  Right now interest is high, with the season just a week old and the Tigers  playing well.

And the Michigan "minor" sports that are discussed?  Those student-athletes who wear the Block M and the Maize and Blue deserve every bit of attention they can get from us.  I just don't get it that they might be somehow less thread-worthy than the revenue sports and their student-athletes.

Bottom line, though: these threads exist within the guidelines of MGoBlog and are popular enough to those who have an interest in them, and with that said, aren't going away.

Easiest solution to avoid aggravation?  Ignore them.

The Tigers were undefeated and this Baseball-thing is still spring-fresh.

It seems reasonable to me to as a topic that a plurality of MGoBloggers would be following.

This thread is certainly  NOT the least thread-worthy topic presently on the right sidebar.

Funny. It's okay for people to criticize my thread about the best player in the NBA reaching a milestone but I'm not allowed to criticize a thread about game 5 out of 162? Good to know.

Actually, it was those people in your thread that started to get me thinking that this might have to start being a thing we dole out from time to time. Your reaction to this thread made up my mind for me. Nobody can help the reaction to what they post, but the folks that do go out of their way to troll such threads with rude displays of disinterest....that we can do something about around here.

I mean, I really mean no offense by it, but I really do think there's a way to mediate this kind of thing. Perhaps a "Games" or "OT" tab on the MGoBoard sidebar? I like discussing the Tigers and all, but sports like baseball that constantly have games probably could get by far more successfully with a weekly open game thread that stays at the top if there's sufficient interest (and for the Tigers, there would be), rather than a new thread for every game. Start it on Sunday, close it out after the Saturday games. Seems far more logical than day after day of new game threads.

In the end, I'd rather propose a solution or three than just bitch, or even bitch about the bitching.

O's 3 - Tigers 1

Verlander pitched very well, but takes the loss.  Any time a starter gives up just 2 over 8 innings, I like their chances of getting the "W".

Detroit's record is now 4-1, I still like the way this team has started the season...except for one glaring problem:  the bullpen.

Al Al came in to pitch the 9th, immediately gave up a solo HR and 2 singles before wiggling out of it with no further damage. but the real damage had already been done.  A 2- run deficit in the 9th is much, much more difficult to overcome than a 1-run deficit.  It completely changed the approach the tigers had to take in the 9th, all they could get was a 1-out double by V-Mart, but he got stranded.

Damn bullpen!

How many MLB teams had four-game winning streaks last year?

I would guess all of them, even 0.315 Houston, which you would expect to have had a four-game winning streak once out of every 101 rolling four-game windows = 1/ (0.315^4)
