OT - Thread Idea - MgoProfiles

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

As we fade from the OT season it occurs to me that it would be fun to reincarnate an old thread idea about mgoblogger profiles, or Q & A's, for our more regular posters.  I know somewhere down a trail here on the blog you can find some old ones, but they are indeed years old and there is a new crop of folks it would be fun to know more about.  I thought of a few categories:

1.  regulars: guys like robf, ray, sadeto, duckstep, brutus, e.german, everybody murders, cali and s.d. mick

2.  regulars who will need to disclose their prescriptions:  mad hatter, mean joe, rafi

3. mgolady bloggers:  wendy, mabel, and of course mgobrewmom

4.  some of the OG's:  don, blaze, space coyote, and the mods, or updates if they have old ones (mgrowold?)

So the questions for the board would be 3-fold:

a.) good idea?   b.) if so, who would you like to hear from?  3.) what format (set questions, maybe follow-up Q & A) would work?

Maybe run them on Mondays or Tuesday, slower days on the blog so they wouldn't clog up good football days, when we get back to OT season, or maybe a bad idea and just fo'gettaboutit!

** Please don't be offended if I missed you on a list - I have limited brain power and it's late**

EDIT:  Looks like the board likes the idea, but best to wait until at least past bowl season, and maybe past hoops season - unless of course that turns into a dumpster fire.

Yeah, it went down last night. All the traffic from MGoBlog killed it, I guess. When I built the new website, I purchased unlimited bandwidth, so it shouldn't have gone down. I shared my displeasure with the people in charge. It's fixed now.

I know the answer to this.  He's a real good guy who likes to try and make people laugh.  He has an odd sense of humor sometimes but he loves Michigan football, his family and is somebody I think would do just about anything to try and help a friend if they needed it.

SixZero came up with the format, logo and was the heart and soul of it. Seth did one (of SixZero) and M-Wolverine picked it up with SixZero's encouragement when it stayed dormant for a while. He and SixZero did something like ten combined in the summer of 2013. Last I heard, SixZero is too busy with other work to put time into the profiles and M-Wolverine has since been banned.

My thoughts on bringing back that same format, FWIW:

First, a full blown profile like that will probably need to wait until at least New Years. Second, SixZero needs a chance to say no if someone wants to use his format/logo/title. Third, you need a mod + someone that has a style that's a good fit to do it. That likely limits the options to mods/staff or one of them plus someone who has been around enough to "get it" and be able to craft questions with some context.

I've been involved on 2/3 sides (not writing questions, which is the most work intensive part) and these take about a week from start to finish because there's a deceptively long checklist and you're dealing with (usually) one or two other working adults with invariably different schedules/priorities.

I can also tell you that if you're looking for an obvious choice to profile that hasn't been done, there's likely a reason. The rejection rate in 2013 was around 50%.

Was the 50% rejection rate from Brian saying he didnt want the user profiled or from the user saying he didnt want to be profiled?

If memory serves Purple Stuff was the last one done.  He's personally one my favorite guys here so I definitely enjoyed the read (and he was NOTHING like I expected).

Brian wasn't involved. I can't picture Brian wanting to exercise editorial control over user profile diaries, honestly.

Without getting into who said what, some people want or need privacy, some don't want a spotlight on them, some don't think their story is very interesting.

I will say that everyone I got in touch with was first class, even when saying no. We get sappy talking about the community sometimes, but there are high quality people all over this site.

idea on the actual format.  i think it would be more like a set of basic topics that everyone would get to, then as they posted folks could chime in with more questions or comments.  basic areas might include things like:

family (married, kids, etc)

school

general line of work

why michigan fan

favorite michigan memories

2 things people wouldn't know about you - for instance, maybe mgojohnstamos is the actual actor, and he could post a picture of him on-set.  or bando would turn out to have a knitting hobby or he collects old mouth pieces from famous trombone players, and he'd let us know that.  stuff along those lines.  i'm sure the board could come up with other standard/pattern Q's.

anyway, just thinking.   if i'm doing any of the coordinating, it will wait until after football season for certain, and like i said, maybe after hoops too.

Fun idea, something that's been played around with in the past.  Might not be so good at the start of the season, though.  Maybe something to file away to help us get through the next off-season?
