OT: Suh gives $2.6 million to Nebraska

Interesting thing, Kevin Williams drops us, he likes engineering, and Suh is making a $600,000 donation to the department. Just interesting IMO.
But good for Suh, giving back is always a good thing, and I hope it helps Nebraska out.

Good for him; if only more athletes held those values (I'm looking at you, Roethlisberger, Santonio Holmes, Jeff Reed etc.)and had just a bit more of the Woodson qualities.

You should probably include Tom Brady on that list. I don't think he's ever mentioned anywhere as a donor to U of M.

There was a list of the highest donating football players put out sometime last year, listed everyone over like 20 or 50k, he wasn't on it. I forget where I saw it.

Why does it matter? Does it make you a better person if you donate to a University rather than a private charity?

Maybe I'm missing something but that doesn't really strike me as "interesting" in a suspicious way. It's not like that money directly goes to the students in the department.

I wasn't saying interesting in a bad way. I wonder if they told Williams that they were getting money to improve the program, and maybe that in fact played a factor.

Can't blame Kevin Williams with his ties to Nebraska and wanting to be the next Suh.
Also, should thank the Detroit Lions because they will be helping Suh pay that donation when they draft him next week.

I understand he is about to sign a massive contract, but it seems a little odd to commit money before he knows what his income is. I'm sure it will never be a problem, but I still would hesitate to donate a good portion of my earnings immediately. Does he have any sponsorship deals? I don't see him rolling coins to come up with this type of money......

I was thinking the same thing. It's a great gesture, but I hope he will be able to afford it. NFL contracts often aren't guaranteed.

Most NFL contracts now include large signing and roster bonuses which are guaranteed. First round picks essentially know what they are going to get based on where they are picked. Suh knows for sure he will be a top 5 pick, which means millions of guaranteed dollars. There is no risk to either Suh or Nebraska with this commitment.
I wish more players were this generous and classy. Can't wait till he is a Lion.

Contracts arent guaranteed as a whole but for a top 10 pick, a significant portion will be. Considering what the recent #2 picks have gotten and that Suh is considered such a good DT, I can assure you his guaranteed amount will be $35-$40mil, with a big chunk of that coming as a signing bonus.
So Suh should have no problem giving $2.6 mil to the school. It's possible that he's a humble guy and knows that the rest of his salary is more than enough for him to live beyond comfortable.

Until I got to your post, I thought I was the only one who felt like this was the old "cart before the horse" scenario. What could it hurt to wait a few weeks, secure your contract, then commit the cash? It's at least remotely possible that he could be in an accident before draft day, after all. Life happens.
I don't know the amount, but he and Tebow have both recently signed with Nike.

I'm guessing he has insurance for a devastating random injury at this point in the process. Although we all know nothing bad will happen to him until he actually joins the Lions, just to get our hopes up. Then comes in the torn ACL in the first pre-season game.
Woodson's donation to Mott is cooler than this.
He hasn't really donated it yet; he has just pledged it. But it's still a class move. I already want the Lions to take him for his on the field work, but he is apparently a great person off the field, too. The Lions can definitely stand to have Suh and a lot more people like him on their team.

He is still technically an unemployed college student (or graduate). It's pretty tough to give what you don't have.

He has a contract with Nike, so he's not actually unemployed. Not sure what it pays, though.
that should happen more often. I'm cautiously excited by the direction the Lions are taking and should they draft this kid on Thursday like expected then his pledge will serve as one more reason to believe a change in direction is actually happening in Motown.
Shows how good of a guy he is, good for him.
