OT: Soccer - USWNT Beat Norway 2-1 to Set Up Showdown vs Japan

Submitted by I Bleed Maize N Blue on

Early Friday the USWNT beat Norway to go 2-0 in the Algarve Cup.  First half was scoreless.  Abby Wambach scored her 133rd career international goal in the 51'.  She doesn't have much of an angle, but enough to get a shot off the far post and in.  (If videos don't show, I'll post below.)

Sub Sydney Leroux scored on a header in the 81'.

Norway scored in the 94' (grr).

Japan, which has beaten Norway 2-1 and Denmark 2-0, is up next on M 3/5 @ 9:10 AM ET (ussoccer.com will have a match tracker).  The US has the edge in goal differential, so only needs to tie to win Group B.  Beating them will feel much better, of course.

Sweden and Germany are contending for Group A; their game starts at 10 AM ET.  Both beat China 1-0; Germany also beat Iceland 1-0, but Sweden beat them 4-1, so have the GD edge.  Winners of Groups A & B will play for the championship; 2nd place group finishers will play for 3rd place.

The U-20 WNT is in Panama competing in the CONCACAF Championship.  They opened by beating Guatemala 6-0.  Lindsey Horan got a hat trick.

Next up is Cuba, Sun 3/4 @ 5PM ET.  Concacaf.com will stream (free registration required, I think).

How did the US girls water polo team do? First, it is a girls sporting event. Second, it is not U of M. And lastly, who cares?

All of these "failed" embeds of videos actually work fine on the iPhone app...

Also, thanks for posting these updates!  I love to hear about these results, even if I don't have the time to follow the teams as closely as I may like
