OT: SI High School Athlete of the Year Hunter Gandee

Submitted by uofmdds96 on

Hunter Gandee's story of walking to Ann Arbor twice has been covered on the board, but this week he was awarded the High School Athlete of the Year.  He has raised over $200,000 for cerebral palsy and helped fund a playground for disabled school children and a Bedford elementary school.

Great story of someone from my town that was overshadowed by the "Mike Dantonio" cover story.  Now he and his brother Braden are local celebrities here in Bedford, MI.   The playground at Douglas Road Elementary is pretty impressive.

In a related item, a few years ago (Hoke era? maybe RR too?) when watching Michigan games from the stands, I noticed a young man on the sidelines who I think had cerebral palsy but he could walk and talk.  He would walk around, chat with a few people, and that seemed like it.  Anyone know who he is?  I don't know why but I always tried to find him on the sidelines after those few games and I don't think I ever did.  Was always curious and happy for him that he was able to have that access.

I'm happy to see this story getting such extensive coverage beyond southeastern Michigan. Good kid doing great work that ends up being a benefit not just to his brother, but to a lot of people.
