It looks like they've reached a settlement, the substance of which includes contributions to a memorial for Sullivan and a campaign on the dangers of scissor lifts.

Cynicism abounds. I hope Sullivan's family takes some comfort from this but somehow I doubt it. Hopefully they've taken some comfort from their faith.

This story continues to be so sad.

Scissor lifts aren't dangerous, however using one in 25+ MPH wind is. If someone made a better lift they would just make an even better idot to hurt themselves.

awareness has been well documented in the construction field for years. As you put it though, there's always some idiot that ignores it. Note that I'm not saying Declan was the idiot but whoever compelled him to still go up definitely is.

If everyone who has lost a loved one had their own personal campaign, we wouldn't be allowed out of our bubbles.

ND was settling its state civil-infraction case. And getting out of a charge of a "knowing infraction."

Since it is Notre Dame, I don't much care and haven't been following the story; but has the school settled with Sullivan's heirs? If they haven't, avoiding a civil infraction of a "knowing infraction" of OSHA regulations might make an awful claim to defend slightly less awful to defend.

From SportingNews.article:

A spokesman for Sullivan's parents said the family was satisfied with the settlement, particularly the nationwide safety campaign.

"There can be no better way to remember Declan than to help others avoid future tragedies," Sullivan's uncle, Mike Miley, wrote by e-mail. Miley and Notre Dame both said the amount of money Notre Dame was contributing to the memorial was a private matter.

EDIT: Okay, I obviously miss that cute little box I could click to get the blockquote. But you get the idea.
