OT: Saturday World Cup Open Thread
Knockout Round kicks off today. No more of that group nonsense, win or go home at this point.
All South American battles today. Winners will meet in the quarterfinals on July 4th.
12:00 PM EDT - Brazil vs. Chile (ABC)
4:00 PM EDT - Colombia vs. Uruguay (ABC)
I wonder if Uruguay's players will greet the Colombians with bites instead of handshakes. It is a way of endearing yourself to strangers.
They must be chomping at the bit.
They'll need to feast on Colombia's defense to satiate their appetite for goals.
Or an ankle biter, or a shoulder biter, or...
Time to make a little history!!
Come on Colombia. I'm tired of hearing about Suarez and also Uruguay's shirts are entirely too tight.
Puma's Smedium uniforms are terrible
How many players does it take to ask a ref for a yellow card?
Feel he will do something good soon.
Glad they advanced even though they took the day off.
Guessing there were no seating licenses...
Goooooooaaalllllaaaasssooo!
Incredible goal! Uruguay trying to force this into a boring game. Thank you James Rodriguez.
what a quality goal. wow
As pretty a goal as it gets.
Top 5 goals thus far in terms of technical skill -
1) Cahill
2) Van Persie
3) James Rodriguez today
4) Messi v Iran?
5) James Rodriquez v Japan?
What do you see as #4 and #5? I think top 3 are pretty clear cut.
EDIT: Hah ESPN asking same question in their outro
Could be homerism, but I think the Jones goal was at least as impressive as Messi's. Very similar as well.
That's more than fair - for distance and placement it was quite awesome. I gave that to Messi due to it being in the 94th and he had a bit more traffic but can make a case for Jones to.
Gervinho had a nice one v Columbia also.
He's means Jones.
Jonns' strike vs. Portugal was very similar to Messi, he was just coming from the right and Messi to the left. I thought Messi's ball moved a little more and it was a game winner. For me, Messi when's a tiebreak.
However I still may put the Jones goal in Alum's top 5 with the clear cut 3 and the Messi goal.
Rodriguez is making himself tens of millions here.
Monaco can afford $45M ? sheesh
Owner is a Russian business tycoon. Billionaire a la Abramovitch.
ah, that explains it :)
This 2nd goal was a beautiful set of passes including the final unselfish header for Columbia!
Should be a very good challenge for Brazil. Columbia truth be told has been playing better this tournament as a whole and you have 2 young attacking studs going at it, 1 for each team.
Lugano is an idiot. Manages to get suspended while sitting on the bench. Strange series of events there.
Ok there it is...
Uruguay finally playing well here in the last 15 minutes while Columbia seemed to have mentally relaxed. While not a pretty display you have to be impressed a country of 3M has had such a nice run and history overall.
Keep exercising those demons, lads
seem pretty fit to me.
Looks like Suarez' absence really bit Uruguay in the ass in this game.
I wont be here for the Sunday matches so I am posting this for my soccer friends for the NED-MEX match! Saw it on my stream on twitter - love that dude.
