OT: Rod Allen

Submitted by Double Nickel BG on
Does anyone else hate listening to this pos announcer? Its gotten to the point that some buddies and I play drinking games when the Tigers are playing. Tonights zinger. In postgame wrapup, he was asked how Cabrera was doing despite his injury. "You can still see that everytime he swings, he still shows discomfort sometimes." BOTTOMS UP!

I love Rod Allen. For one thing, the guy is a very smart baseball man underneath that sort of homeriffic exterior. He really is. He's uncanny about predicting what's coming next, like the next pitch or whether the runner is going to take off for second. He just knows the little bitty things that make up good baseball. Plus he's got that sort of folksy charm that people always liked about the great radio men. I hope Rod Allen is around for a long, long time.

I used to think that Rod was a tool until I started listening to Joe Morgan and the Yankees crews. He and Mario work well together, and I can block out his inane comments.

Yeah, he makes some dumb comments (bases load, tigs up 3,thome at the bat and Rod says "it would be good to keep him in the ballpark here") but so does every announcer. Allen is a homer who doesn't reach the obnoxious levels of Hawk and he seems like a real nice dude.

But seriously I agree with everything you just wrote. And in regards to the first caller... I have also played many a drinking game to the dulcet tones of Rod Allen and that is what makes him so fun. He has his own interesting ways of saying things that are normally a boring comment, for instance: "That boy is country strong!" instead of "Player X is really strong." And who doesn't like discussions solely centered around cotton candy? I prefer blue cotton candy on a paper cone, because that is the only acceptable way of consuming said candy.

I love Allen and Impemba. The stupid shit that gets said is what makes it entertaining. Somehow he points out the obvious in a much less annoying way than Madden. I was watching the game last year when he said Thames was "some kind of country strong". Next thing you know there's signs all over the stands about being country strong. He's a trend setter in the D. That, coupled with chasing the pitcher all over the park makes him my favorite human being ever.

I have always been afraid that Rod was going to be taken to the next level at Fox and cover nationally televised games. I love Rod and Mario. They are an excellent duo. Try listening to Cubs and Sox announcers, or Braves announcers. I'm telling you, there is rarely a dull moment in their games. Maybe only Blyleven is better.

I'm watching the Extra Innings broadcast right now, and it's not the FSD broadcast, and the Tigers are playing the White Sox, and you guys can put two, two, and two together and figure out which awful announcer I'm suffering through, and Christ on a bucket besides being stupid-ass ridiculous homers, these guys have spent the last two and a half innings doing nothing but bitching about the umpiring. I want Rod and Mario back.

... really knows the game. He says things about the game each and every broadcast that I find quite insightful. It doesn't bother me in the least that he doesn't know what "circuitous" means. My biggest problem with the Tigers broadcasts is Impemba's gargantuan spartan nose. But that's my problem, not his. And unlike Blaha, he doesn't spend his entire Detroit professional sports broadcast talking about spartan athletics. If Impemba does something about his nose the Tigers will have an exceptional broadcasting duo. Until then it is merely quite good.
