The Robocop statue is going to be built in Detroit. I don't really have much to say but the details are here. (don't kill me but it is a freep link)

Sorry -- trying to do anything meaningful in Detroit (i.e., anything other than cosmetic changes in the downtown area) will, in the near term, be like chucking snowballs into the center of the earth to raise the temperature.

An extra teacher would certainly not be unhelpful.  But, the fundamental problems will still be there.  What are those?  A large city where the average socioeconomic level is abysmally low.

I'm of the opinion that it's far too late for conventional fixes.  That reeks of naive, suburban thinking.  Detroit's citizens are, in the aggregate, too far gone.  They can't help themselves.  (Take a second to think about that.)  For just one of many examples, look at what the "leaders" of that dunghole (Kwame et al.) get away with, and look at how easy it is for them.

The Robocop statue is a joke, yes, but it's out-of-the-box thinking.  (I dislike that expression, but it seems about right.)  It brings generally positive (yes, seriously) thinking to the area.

Detroit will get better only when the average quality of its population improves.  (That isn't a slam on the low end.  Their position is a consequence of many factors.)

I'm not against building the statue. In fact, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Having  a reasonable amount of quality teachers isn't going to fix the city by itself. My statement more had to do with how easy it seems to raise money for a joke (whether it's a helpful joke or not) when something like the education system is woefully poor.

Here's a stupid yet serious question:  What would be a better use of vacant land - erecting a statue or a whore house?  The whore house would arguably drive the values of adjacent property down, moreso than a simple statue (no matter how silly said statute is).  That said, I submit that a whore house would provide a much greater public service than a statue.  Thoughts?

I don't think these guys know what they're getting when it comes to the actual production of the statue.

We can take a relatively small figure of RoboCop (conceivably even an action figure), have it 3D scanned by lasers (cool!) and scale its form to create a light-weight model of any size we'd like, which can then be used to pour and cast liquid metal.

Really?  You're going take a small 4" action figure, scan it and blow it up 7 feet tall. Someones been watching too much CSI.

It'll look something like this:

That's an awful lot of applesauce. Or apple juice. But spending $50,000 on Mott's for Detroiters is probably a better idea than say giving it to C.S. Mott, which isn't in the city. However if you're looking for a good children's hospital to pimp while attempting to make a point might I suggest Children's Hospital of Michigan instead? Conveniently located Midtown and everything.

The Robocop statue is an idiotic idea. The city of Detroit is trying to alter  the popular perception that it is, well, "New Detroit", and this is the last thing that it needs. A statue of Axel Foley makes more sense and "Beverly Hills Cop" really only has a tangential relationship to the city.

All arguments against the statue based on tackiness are summarily rejected by the court on the grounds that we already have a big fist sculpture** and nothing that wouldn't raise the hackles of the churches can out-tacky a twenty-foot fist.  As long as the statue isn't immediately graffitied on (this city is its own worst enemy in this regard) I see no problems.

**Which just yesterday my dad opined wasn't clenched hard enough.  Given the amusement with which out-of-towners view the fist (as an ironic commentary on the city) it would take a local to complain that the giant fist statue isn't clenched hard enough.

For the record, I like the fist statue.  It's my ambition to take a picture one day fist-bumping the fist using the magic of perspective.

Into the American Hong Kong.  They were the largest major city to go for LBJ's programs, which failed.  Do the opposite. It probably couldn't be worse, right?
