One of the greatest voices in the history of the game has passed. Rest In Peace Keith Jackson.

However, I think he falls into the category of "local legend".  Beloved by those that grew up with him and respected nationally, but not a part of the national consciousness the way a Keith Jackson, Al Michaels, John Madden, (and for better or worse Brent Musberger, Joe Buck) etc. are.

I grew up in NY and eventually learned to enjoy Harwell, but in the beginning I wondered what all of the fuss was about.  The NY versions of Harwell would be Marv Albert for the Knicks (although he is also a national name), Kiner / Murphy for Mets fans and Phil Rizutto (ugh) for Yankee fans.

Mets' fans today love Keith Hernandez (and to a slightly lesser degree Cohen and Darling) but I can see how they are not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

Keith Jackson and Bob Ufer are why I love Michigan football the way i do....no one did it better.

Didn't Keith Jackson coin the term the "Big House" when referencing Michigan Stadium?

Met him when I was working at a golf course in college. Very nice guy, big tipper.

He will always be the voice of college football for me, along with Ufer of course.

R.I.P. Keith, and thank you.

Hello Heaven!!!!

So many of my college football memories from childhood have Keith Jackson's voice - that wonderful voice - interjected into them, and he covered so many games which people still talk about today, whether their team won or lost, not the least of which were many Michigan games. A huge loss for fans of college football.

RIP, Keith Jackson.

So good, I could listen during those rare moments when Michigan was losing.  He got excited for scores but never forgot there was a defense on field.  Today's announcers are intolerable to listen to if your team doesn't have the upper hand.

He rumbled and stumbled to a first down but the men with the little yellow hankies will be bringing this one back.  . . . and he's just a soph-a-more!

There are some great, great Michigan clips above.

Best college football announcer hands down.

Announced some of his best televised games were in Ann Arbor.

1977 Teas A&M @ Michigan was one of his finest, but there are so many.

Loved his work with Frank Broyles and Ara Parseighian doing color alongside him.

I’m tearing up a little bit watching SportsCenter, and all the Twitter tributes. He was so important for college football fans that grew up in the 80s & 90’s

“The MVP of today’s ball game: you wanna know who it is? I’m standing alongside his proud daddy. Quarterback Brian Griese of Michigan”

I don't remember the year but, Keith and Bob did a UM game when Brian was playing. (It could have been 97.). We just came up out of section 21 and were headed towards the parking lot at Pioneer when we noticed we were walking next to Keith. We struck up a conversation and he said Bob went to the lockerroom to see Brian and he was on his to way to the airport. We talked for a few minutes until we separated. Probably not a cool story to most but it was for me.

One of the saddest celebrity deaths for me in a long time. He’s definately one of the last good broadcasters in a sport not named hockey. It seems like he always had the perfect thing to say for every iconic moment: “Whoah, Nellie!” “Fumbllle!” “Hello Heisman” “He’s got one block...and another block..........touchdown! No flags!” Ok, I have a big question for you guys: WHY THE FUCK WOULD ANYONE ON THIS SITE MAKE THIS THREAD BE OT?? Mods (or OP) please correct this disgraceful accident instantly please!

One of the many great things he did as a broadcaster was being low-key for the most part and only getting excited for the truly big/memorable plays, unlike Musberger, Gus Johnson or some of the other loudmouths. As painful as it was to watch Michael Westbrook make his catch to beat us in ‘94 there was something magical about hearing Keith Jackson yell “INCREDIBLE!”. You just knew that what he said and how he said it meant you had just witnessed something special. Thank you Mr. Jackson, thank you!

When I think of my favorite college football moments, his voice is calling the play by play. There will never be another Keith Jackson.

He has always been the best in my opinion. I associate watching college football in my youth with him. The things that I seen and heard that felt so magical that got me so hooked today. Keith Jackson will always be the best in my eyes. "Whoa, Nellie!" "Hello Heisman!"

The Ernie Harwell, Vin Scully, Jack Buck and Keith Jackson types. Folksy, charming and down-to-earth storytellers that were refreshing and compelling to listen to; as opposed to the brash and in your face delivery of today's voices.

They just don't make them like this anymore. Rest easy, sir.

The voice of college football. When Keith Jackson was calling a game, you knew you were listening to something special. He was a legitimate draw, all by himself. They broke the mold after Keith Jackson, man. R.I.P.

Damn. Damn, damn, damn. There's a little less joy in the world now. I'll miss the simple delight he exhibited at spending a fall day on campus--any campus--to bring you a game, not to mention his mellifluous voice and down-home charm.

My all-time favorite line is from the '93 Rose Bowl against Washington, in which the camera lingered on OT Lincoln Kennedy's plumberiffic three-point stance:

"And there's a moon rising over Pasadena..."
