OT-Richt-How many ways did he blow this game?

Submitted by Ziff72 on

I imagine the Georgia boards are melting down right now with Richt hate.  He pulled a classic Lloyd snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.  Here are my favorite calls.

1.  3:30 left  up 7 he decides to give up and run 3 in the line and give MSU the ball with 2:00 to go(an enternity in college) when 1 1st down wins you the game.  Way to trust your stud qb.  Bad

2. Ok so you have a pretty good defense and decide to be conservative.  I don't like it but not indefensible.  So what do you do to your defense that has dominated most of the game?  Prevent.  Of course you go prevent.  I'm not a anti prevent guy but in this situation(plenty of time, worst case is tie) it was stupid.

3. Go to OT and set up your eratic kicker for a 43yd fg.   Just brutal.

4. My favorite.  3rd and 10 vs an aggressive MSU defense you go under center and run a PA pass when you are on the edge of FG range.  Shockingly he is sacked and MSU blocks the low kick.   Play action on 3rd and 10 has to be my most hated call in football.

Richt I hate you and it has nothing to do with you blowing my under bet which had a 99% win probablity with 3 minutes to go in the 2nd qtr.

Do you have any other Richt beauties I missed

Great win to send a number of Spartans out on a high note.

In terms of dumb calls, I also thought running into MSU's strength (the D-line) with a slow developing play on 4th & 1 inside the MSU 10 in the 1st qtr was also stupid.

Not to subtract from the hatred, but when you calculate the o/u probability, does that take in the possibility of multiple OTs?  Just wonderin'

...when he's cleaned UM's clock four years running. Not to mention ending Michigan's numerous September Heisman's Heisman campaigns. And he welcomed Brady "Mike Ditka" Hoke into the state rivalry with an emphatic loss. Oh well. Maybe you all will learn some humility with 5 straight. Wouldn't bet on it though (to the degenerates that lost money betting against State today).

revels in reading dozens of self-satisfied UM fans rip MSU's program for 3 hours only to switch into excuse-making when MSU wins. Really, the view is SO much better from the other side of this rivalry; I honesty can't stress that enough. I now know how nice you guys had it as the big brother all of the years prior. Thanks for keeping the seat warm and good luck tomorrow :)

they get upset b/c Denard is a good football player, a great athlete, cool, and popular (with us and the media). Hence their made up nicknames.

they get upset with Hoke b/c he's a good coach, cool (he can actually smile comfortably), great recruiter, great leader (see his coaching staff) with great potential. Hence more nicknames.

they get upset with their current streak b/c they know they're so far away from ever tying up the series, much more taking the lead.  Hence their arbitrary timeframes (a logic that contradicts their bragging of basketball).

This is why they will always be little brother, and still struggle to recruit well (of course, they'll use sparty logic to tell you recruiting rankings don't matter, until they sign Se'von Pittman--oh wait . . .)

We are very, very happy with Denard Robinson as the QB of the Michigan Wolverines. You'll have to trust me on that one. No offense, but you sound like a jock strap sniffer with all the "cool, popular, great leader" comments. Kind of disturbing. Well, MSU has lost the past 4 "recruiting wars" to Michigan and I'd say the past 4 years have turned out pretty well in our favor. Let's make a deal here: you guys can continue racking up the September Heismans, the "cool and popular" labels, the recruiting championships... and we'll keep exposing your teams, playing in the big games and contending for Big 10 championships. My, how much better this rivalry is now! See you in October :)

I detest Sparty as much as anyone here, but they certainly looked like the superior team in the second half.  I'll give Sparty credit for playing a great half and a decent overtime.  As much as it pains me to say it, they deserved to win.

But I still hope it all starts to crash down for them next season.

I thought their defense looked pretty good, but they managed 10 points on two gifts from Murray. If he doesn't implode early in the second half, this one isn't even close. Cousins did not have a good game (27-50, 1 TD, 3 INTs) and they managed only 73 yards on the ground.

Then of course Richt handed them the game with his fetal playcalling after Cousins would-be soul crushing interception.

go out on a bowl win is good for them.  gives em confidence and will make the rivalry we have with them that much better.  unlike FOSU, who should be like an italian in pergatory.  St. Patricks day for eternity.

I really hate when Michigan fans badmouth our HOF former coach. No class. I also hate when Michigan fans cannot find it in their hearts to support our B1G brothers. I hope you do not hurt yourself climbing down off that very tall horse.

I hate it when arrogant Michigan fans find the need to tell me who to root for outside of Michigan. I wasn't pulling for PSU because, well, fuck them. I wasn't pulling for OSU because, fuck them. I wasn't pulling for MSU because I can't stand them. I hate Beilema, so fuck them. Danny Hope can eat a dick, so I wasn't pulling for them. After our co-national championship, fuck Nebraska. I don't really care about Northwestern, so why root for them? That leaves the only B10 team I am rooting for....Michigan. Why do I have to find it in my heart to root for the B10? Most of their fans don't like us, so why give them that?

But then why not take Michigan to the MAC and win twelve games a year? Personally, I like having Michigan play in a prestigious conference, and one way conference prestige is measured is bowl game performance.

I love beating OSU as much as the next poster, but I'd rather that was a more exclusive experience that couldn't be replicated by a 6-6 SEC East team; not to mention that conference difficulty is a big part of the BCS computers. It would be a sad day if a 13-0 B1G team was left out of the BCS title game for SEC and BXII teams.

Henne could barely throw the ball 10 yards in that game.  To question how injured he was in stupid.  And Hart was always hurt like it or not, and also didn't even look like himself in the OSU game, not to mention 2 solid RB behind him that had very good games that year in Brown and Minor.  Carr didn't just throw in the towel by sitting them against Wisc., he was giving his team the best chance they had at winning games.  Throwing in the towel would have been putting two injured players out on the field to get even more hurt.

The 1996 team managed two road victories over end-of-season Top 5 teams Colorado (20-12) and Ohio State (13-9).

Turnovers in the four losses cost the Wolverines a special season.

From most frustrating/gift-worthy to somewhat gift-worthy

Five turnovers in 9-3 loss to lowly Purdue

The winning drive was set up when linebacker Chris Koeppen sacked Scott Dreisbach and recovered his fumble at the Michigan 33.
(snip)
Michigan missed a golden opportunity for points late in the first half (at the Purdue goal line). Short-yardage fullback William Carr, who is normally a nose tackle, fumbled after a handoff as Purdue clinged to its small lead at the intermission. Koeppen again recovered the fumble.

Griese throws blind pick six jump pass near 'Bama 10 for 10 point gift

Gene Stallings went out a winner in his final game at Alabama as linebacker Dwayne Rudd returned an inteception 88 yards for the go-ahead score to give the 16th-ranked Crimson Tide a 17-14 victory over 15th-ranked Michigan
(snip)
...Lloyd Carr said. "We needed three points there and when they blitzed we expected them to blitz. Brian pumped a couple of times and then made a bad throw."

Blocked punt returned for TD and five turnovers doom Mich vs PSU

Freshman David Macklin blocked a punt and Ahmad Collins returned it two yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 3:45 left in the third quarter as number 11 Penn State rallied for a 29-17 Big Ten victory at 16th-ranked Michigan.
(snip)
Michigan turned the ball over five times in the second half, including free safety Kim Herring's interception of a Scott Dreisbach pass late in the fourth quarter. On the next play, Curtis Enis broke loose for a 38-yard scoring run that salted the game away.

4th qtr fumble deep in Mich territory keeps NW comeback alive

<PosterComment>OK, in this one, there were plenty of opportunities for the D not to give up 17 4th quarter points</PosterComment>
Northwestern (4-1, 2-0) scored all its points in the final 13 minutes of the game
(snip)
Northwestern pulled within 16-6 on a three-yard run by Levelle Woods on an inside handoff. Schnur found Bates in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Michigan fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, giving the Wildcats back the ball on the Michigan 21. Three rushes by Darnell Autry moved the ball to the Wolverines' 6-yard line, but the drive stalled on two incomplete passes by Schnur. Gowins kicked a 21-yard field goal to pull the Wildcats within 16-11 at the 10:46 mark.

Had Michigan taken care of the ball in 1996, we would have won at least 10 games. I think that year colored Lloyd's glasses for the remainder of his career, whether the the risk/reward ratio was the same as that of the defensively stalwart 1996 team.

for some things and praise for others.  As for who else gets praise, you're the only one talking about him.  He's a part of Michigan's history and recruited much of team 132.  So, again--why are you thinking about him or why are you so butthurt about him?

If Georgia had lost by giving up a million points because they're defense was awful, then maybe RR would be a better comparison.

But Georgia had the game in the bag and lost because they played far too conservatively. Regrettably, that does sound like a Lloyd Carr type loss.

And Richt and Bobo shat the bed. way to call the same dumbass plays you have called all season that everyone and their mothers have seen tape of. They deserved to lose. Too many knees, too much up the middle bullshit, not enough passion, no determination. Blargity.

Reader71

January 3rd, 2012 at 10:41 AM ^

Yeah, Richt. You should have called plays you never ran all season so that your players, who never practiced them, could execute them perfectly.

Or better yet, just draw stuff up on the turf and tell your boys to run it. "You go here, you go here, you run here, turn around, then go there. You guys block these guys. On 6." No team can have tape on plays you've just invented.

And who runs the up the middle play in that situation? We all know there is only one running play that is designed to go up the middle, so you should have picked the other running play, the one designed to go outside. Or even the other, third, and final play in football, the pass.

I may have just overdosed on sarcasm, but you deserve it.

BlueLotCrew

Richt is a much better coach than Lllloyd was. Coaches don't win or lose the games, players do. To say otherwise proves you have never played a competitive sport in your life.

Reader71

January 3rd, 2012 at 10:47 AM ^

How can you compare Carr and Richt if neither of them has ever done anything to win of lose any games?

Also, by using the term 'competitive sports', you seem to be comparing individual games (golf) with team games (football), non-contact sports (baseball) with contact sports (football), free-flowing games (soccer) with intermittent-action games (football). Those are all stupid comparisons.

And it's obvious that players win games, but they must be taught how to play (practice), they must be coordinated in their efforts (scheme), and they should be put into the best situation to showcase their game-winning ability (play calling). Everything in parentheses is done by coaches. And a lot of it is hugely important.

It's good that Sparty won. Improves the reputation of the B1G.

Lord knows a win was needed against the SEC today, with everyone else in the B1G losing.

I don't see what the big freak-out is.  I watched part of the game, but I had barely any vested interest so and when the Rose Bowl came on I changed the channel and watched that.  I get that MSU is our rival and we hate them and they've beaten us for a while, but they won a bowl game against an SEC team which looks great for the BIG seeing how we as a conference have done pathetic recently.  Give credit where credit is due and don't act all bitter, cause quite frankly it isn't worth your time.  Michigan plays tomorrow, that's what I care about.

Richt completely screwed this game late in the 4th quarter and in OT.

Beyond what you mentioned, I can't believe the playcalling on the last series where one more first down would have sealed the deal.  MSU had been dominating (to say the least) the line of scrimmage with something like 17 TFLs, and yet GA called three straight running plays (which of course, resulted in 4 total yards).  While this got the clock down to about 2 minutes with no TOs, that's plenty of time for any offense, particularly MSU that has some playmakers, to throw the ball down the field.

I don't understand coaches who turtle up when the game is on the line.  If Georgia's QB throws an incomplete on 2nd and/or 3rd down, MSU gets to keep a TO - so what?  It's rare that with 2 minutes left a team is going to run out of time - either they will score (which MSU did w/ easily enough time left) or they will get stopped on downs, which makes whether they had 1 or 0 timeouts meaningless when you kneel on it 2 or 3 times.  At least by throwing it, GA would have given themselves another chance or two to win the game, instead of completely relying on your D.

It's good the Big 10 won one game, but man, what an ugly slate of games this afternoon. As a football fan, I don't know why anyone would watch the Big 10 unless your from that set of schools.

He coached a lot like coach Carr in this game. Taking a knee with time on the clock before the half and the ot. Running the ball when it was apparent that only the pass was working. Pretty much trying to milk the clock from the first possession of the second half. Very hard to watch. State is the luckiest team I've ever seen too. Unreal the calls they continue to get. That strange pass interference / drop call was just plain weird. Oh well, sun even shines on a dogs ass sometimes.

I agree that Richt made some questionable decisions, but I would hate to see him get fired. He's the only decent human being amongst the SEC coaches. He's also the opposite of Dantonio in that regard. MSU was the only B1G team I was rooting against.

I think "blowing the game" is pretty harsh phrasing - it was more a systemic collapse based on a series of counterintuitive decisions.

In all reality, I think it has a little more to do wit the fact that MSU played a much more aggressive game in the 2nd half. It seems to me that, as  the 2nd half wore on, Georgia decided to go to a more formulaic and less aggressive style on both sides of the ball and let MSU back in that  game (the climax for me was the knee in the 1st OT). Of course, MSU eventually won, and I fear that Richt might pay  the price for it  - I would hate to see him go out like that honestly, for he coached what was an otherwise great season for them (well, there was also the SEC Championship Game, but they are 10-4 on the season, which isn't too shabby for the SEC, especially the weaker division).
