OT: Richmond, VA - UCI Worlds
Are there any MGoCyclists heading down to RIchmond this weekend for the UCI Worlds? I'm hoping to catch the BYU game at a bar if anyone else wants to meet up. We still should be able to catch the end of the women's race after the game.
Does anyone know if Bailey's Smokehouse is still the go-to Michigan bar in Richmond? I checked out the thread on Michigan friendly bars and they were the only one, but that was 5+ years ago.

Serious question...what does the end of OT season really mean?

While looking for a good "there is no off-season" picture, I stumbled upon this quote. No clue if it's the real DB, but too good not to share.

Not going, but it's pretty cool world's is being hosted in the US. Looking forward to watching on universal sports.

Gus' is the biggest UM meet up party in RVA weekly for games. I'm in church hill and will be watching the game from home but I'm one block off the course and three blocks from the main Libby Hill climb. Any mgoblog'ers who are coming for the race are welcome to email me at jaron clay -at- hot mail dot com for my address and I'll pretty much have an open house with Bell's and the game on.

Oh wow, that's very generous. I might take you up on that. Like another poster, I'm coming down with guys who care more about the racing than football, and they are my ride, so I'll find out what their plans are that day. But I'll email you and let you know. Thanks!

I'll be there.
Driving straight down from Saline on Friday. The crew I'm with will most likely be a lot more invested into the racing action than the game, so I'll likely miss it and try to watch it later at the hotel whenever I can find some sort of replay.
For those poo-pooing the event, its a pretty huge deal that the US is hosting World's this year. The last time the US hosted was 1986.
I had a chance to race the course last year as I qualified for collegiate road nationals and they were using the course as a test run for worlds, but had to miss it due to graduation (and the fact that I would not have been remotely competetive.)
It'll be cool to see Coryn Rivera and Allie Dragoo (from Grand Rapids) race against the world's best after watching them lay waste to much of the collegiate fields while they were at Marian.

You bringing a bike down? I'm doing the "conquer the cobbles" ride on Friday night, but would like to get a ride in Saturday or Sunday if you are interested.
I think one of the Marian kids won the Junior women's TT today.

I'm not sure yet. Our carpool situation is kind of hectic at this point and I'm not sure if we'll have enough room for everyone's bikes. We're hoping to have room, but I'd have to let you know some time closer to the weekend after our travel arrangements get solidified. Feel free to shoot me an email at carltont at umich dot edu and maybe we can get some sort of ride together.

Predictions? - If I was betting I would probably take Sagan, but I have a feeling Boonen finds his old form and shocks everyone.

The course seems to suit Sagan, I'm just not sure if he has any help... I could see Degenkolb taking it.

Bikers...I'm and idiot.

Nope, 6 Gap Crit and Century this weekend. Any Michigan bars in Dahlonega?
September 21st, 2015 at 9:41 PM ^
6 gap is an awesome ride! I've never done the whole century, but I've done all of the gaps (+ Brasstown) and love riding in the area. Neels and Unicoi are my favorites.

Sweet, I haven't ridden in that area before and I'm pretty pumped. Plus got the crit downtown Saturday at 4. I should be golden as long as the BYU game doesn't go to OT!

This bike race is a pain in the ass. Can't wait for it to be over!!!
September 21st, 2015 at 10:24 PM ^
Honestly, it hasn't been that bad so far IMHO. No crowds anywhere. Seems like all us locals are terrified to go out but I've had no problem getting anywhere really so far and I'm in Church Hill which is bike race central.
To be fair, expecting this coming weekend to be totally different and working from home Thursday and Friday.

Hey, my city is doing something interesting and unique, and it's capturing the attention of people around the world. This hasn't happened since the civil war. But more importantly, it's going to take me ten extra minutes to get to the office! What a pain in the ass! Who thought this was a good idea?!
September 21st, 2015 at 11:43 PM ^
You don't know my struggle. We've had a bunch of meetings about what to do during race week. The city is damn near shit down. Everybody is taking the same routes to work backing up traffic. We have to move employees around to get their hours bcuz we may have to close certain stores. I understand it's great for the city and all but it's been a headache for me.

The bike race literally goes right near my house and my school. My school is closed Wednesday because of it

The (Award Winning) UM Alumni Association of Richmond meets at Gus' and this is (BY FAR) the best public spot in town for watching the game and is the only "true" UM bar. It is also a Florida Gators and VCU bar and maybe even more. Two important things for people to note to guarantee a spot with the group and to help the restaurant properly staff they ask that you send a quick RSVP to [email protected] by 6pm on Wednesday, September 23. Also there is a canned food drive happening vs. the other (lesser) alumi associations in town so bring a canned food donation (or $$$$) if you are so inclined. If you are not an alumni don't worry. They are cool with regular Michigan fans (like myself, ((Liberty '09 (Doh!))) hanging out and participating, just try to RSVP and bring some canned food and they will embrace you and invite you back. If you don't get the chance to RSVP and want to go anyway, that is totally cool, just know that you do not have a reserved seat and that you might be the one person creepily hovering behind the more reponsible people constanty apologizing to the servers as they politely say "excuse me" before/during/after each snap of the ball. Enjoy Richmond! So much great food to be had here.
