OT Remembering Pearl Harbor

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on
I apologize if this is a double post, but I scanned the board and ran a search and came up with nothing more than Animal House references. Anyway, just thought we as the Mgoblog community should recognize the 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded at Pearl Harbor. FDR, "December 7th, 1941 - A date which will live in infamy."

but I need to say it. First I will say that I have a great respect for Americans, especially their military. I have to say though, that this board is not only frequented by Americans. It is, therefore, not correct to say that the war started at Pearl Harbour. While it did for the Americans, many people from many other countries had died in that war before Pearl Harbour took place. Having said that, I have a lot of respect and admiration for all those who fought and died in that war (from all the allied countries) and on this Anniversary, I remember those from Pearl Harbour.

I know you are in Canada and you spell certain phrases with an "u." My comment was made in a joking manner of which I should have noted. I was not referencing anything about world history other than acknowledging your previous comment and correcting my own.

Actually, don't we, as the United States, get to pick the spelling of a place in our country? Didn't we get that right when Hawaii became a state? If I went on a board about Indian sports, for example, and kept referring to "Bombay," wouldn't it be proper for someone to correct me? Or a board about, say, a university in Turkey and kept calling Istanbul "Constantinople" wouldn't someone have the right to tell me I was wrong? What if I kept calling St. Petersburg "Leningrad" on a Russian board? Point is, if you are going to point out that WWII started before U.S. involvement, you could at least use the proper, U.S. spelling of Pearl Harbor. Not trying to get all Lou Dobbs on you or whatever, just saying.

Buddy, what you just wrote is hardly a "just sayin'" post. You just used totally different examples in your post. Calling a city something it is no longer referred to is nothing like one country spelling a city in another country a different way. Let me ask you this: When you spell a city in Germany would you spell it in the english language or in German. I can tell you that you would spell it in English. There is a difference between American English and Canadian English and I will always spell things is Canadian english since I am Canadian. The point of my post was that the War didn't start during or following Pearl Harbour but before, and that is universally accepted, unlike the spelling of certain words. In short, you get the right to spell anything you want whatever way you like, just the same as other countries will spell those same words/places differently because it is their right. Actually, in short....piss off. Nothing I said in my post was false or mean spirited. I gave credit to all the men and women who fought and or died in the war, I simply stated that it started prior to Pearl Harbour. You, on the other hand, are being an ass.

it's something you hear all the time. "It's so moving; there's nothing like it," etc. You don't realize though how true those statements are until you visit there. Believe me when I say there is NOTHING like Pearl Harbor. It is absolutely worth half a day to go down there and see.

I am not trying to be an a**hole or take away the significance of that day by any means because it should always be remembered so do not take this the wrong way please but I was just wondering if you knew today was the 8th. I will take my hat off in remembrance along with you anyway. Was a tragic day in our history and my heart goes out to anyone who lost someone that day.

My apologies. Regardless, it was an excellent op and it wouldn't bother me if it was re-posted every day. I just thought you might be confused as to what date it was because it happens to me. And to the post below, thank you. I was not aware of that because I wasn't much of a history buff even though it wasn't long ago. I know some of the facts but not all the details. I appreciate the knowledge.

I'm not trying to be an a$$hole either but if you check your history books you'll see that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was only a part of a larger Japanese offensive in the Pacific, including attacks against other American territories like the Fillipines and my home, Guam. Those attacks, because they happened across the dateline, happened on December 8th. So either day can truly be used to remember those lives lost in the Japanese offensive. Just sayin'.
