OT - Rejection Letters (the book!)

Submitted by Tacopants on

CNN has a Q and A up with an editor who compiled a book of rejection letters.  In it, he says his favorite rejection letter is from a student who applied to Princeton's "Law School", only to be told that Princeton didn't have a law school.

So, its all very innoculous, but if you look at the pictures (#7), you actually get to see the rejection letter.  The address?  1805 Washtenaw, Ann Arbor, MI.  The guy was a Michigan alum.

/facepalm

He did get into Harvard Law though, so the story isn't all bad.

The letter looks pretty old--like typewriter old.  Perhaps it was a written request for an application?  There was a time before email and maybe he just wanted to apply to Ivy League law schools.  I'm not applying to law school, but I would have thought Princeton had a law school.

The guy did go to Michigan and then Harvard, so I find it somewhat difficult to believe that he fabricated an application to a ficticious law school.

I ought to neg you for suggesting that a Michigan alum is anything less than infallible.  WE ARE PERFECT!

This reminds me of a story I recently heard.  My good friend down in Texas met a guy who went to MSU's law school.  The guy, who grew up in central Texas, admits that he only went to MSU because it was one of the few schools that accepted him.  Before making the trip to East Lansing, he made sure to buy a block M hat to show his new school colors with pride.  After getting to EL, he realized he was enrolled at MSU, not UofM.

whose roommate was from Chicago and mixed the schools up. She had full intention of coming to Michigan, but applied to State on "accident," accepted, and moved on in before she realized it.

My take on this...if you can't distinguish between the schools, especially with proximity like Chicago, you don't deserve to go here.

The Boathouse for UM women's rowing is full of beautiful pictures taken at nationals some years back.  MSU hired some photographer to get a bunch of candids of their team during the competition.  When he showed them the proofs,  they found that he'd taken all his shots of U-M, not MSU.  That's how U-M came to have them.

Everyone at work keeps congratulating me because "our" basketball coach didn't take the Cleveland job. I'm interning for a large defense contractor that recruits Michigan grads and has an hour + line at the CoE career fair. I told them confusing UM and MSU was like confusing NYU with a SUNY school... except UM > NYU and not private.

Senior year at UM I was helping my apartment-mate write his resume, he was graduating from the school of A&D and was a pretty smart guy, although writing not his strong suit.

Under Education heading, he had the requisite info on his M schooling, but on the line for high school, he had:

Class Valid Victorian - year, schoolname, etc.

No typo.

I got rejected from a PhD program at Michigan in a cut-and-paste email from a secretary in the department after I emailed asking a question about my application.  "Oh, the letters are going out tomorrow, here's yours:"

Gee, thanks, alma mater.
