OT: Red Wings and NHL open thread

So far I'm watching Montreal vs Boston. That crowd is really amped. Great thing is, CBC and VS have different games on. I also get Philly vs Buffalo.

Pittsburgh vs Tampa is also on, but I don't get that.

Wings vs Phoenix at 10:30 of course!

Based on how few latinos I have seen, both as a hockey fan and player for my entire life, either playing or watching hockey. That number is very very low. I estimate that maybe 1-2 out of 10 would "like" hockey...I know a lot of latinos and literally 2 consider themselves hockey "fans"

Got it.  So it's just your personal observation.  If we're going the "personal observation" route, instead of the actual data route, I'll counter with this: when we were STHs in Tampa Bay we saw a lot of the demographic that you claim doesn't like hockey at the games.  And by "a lot" I really do mean A LOT.  I suppose my question for you would be: have you ever been to an NHL game in an area with a high population of that particular demographic?

Do you disagree that the number of soccer fans has a disproportionately large number of latino fans relative to the population? Or that hockey fans are disproportionally white? Other sports are more mixed in terms of fanship, like basketball and baseball...but hockey and soccer are definitely corelated with race in terms of fanship.

I don't disagree that there are SOME latino hockey fans. Areas where there may be a large population of the aforementioned demographic and also have an NHL team in the city are all BIG cities with a LOT of people. A small percentage of a large sub-population in those areas would certainly lead to a strong support at the games in said city.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm sure that everyone else who is reading this thread and who doesn't care about what you and I are talking about would appreciate if you would reply to previous comments made instead of commenting like you are.  It's not really fair to everyone else to have to wade through this conversation to find the posts about the game.  In other words, use the "reply" button.

Our father who art in Detroit. Hockey be thy name. Thy will be done. The cup will be won. On ice, as well as in the stands. Give us this day our hockey sticks. And forgive us our penalties, as we forgive those who cross-check against us, Lead us not into elimination. But deliver us to victory. In the name of the fans, ...Lord Stanley, and in the name of the Wings. Amen.

That had to be one of the more poorly officiated games I have seen recently.  The fact that the Wings completely outplayed PHO and yet somehow the officials decide that the Wings should be the more penalized team keeps the score at least close.  How many PHO crosschecks and interference calls are going to go uncalled?  That call on Abs was terrible (Jovo was holding his stick and it occurred right after Doan took a late run at Lids) and the call on Homer was terrible also.  And yet no calls when the Wings are cross checked to the ice on scoring chances in front of the net.  Terrible.  And credit the Wings for winning it anyway.  Should have been about 7-1 without the gifts.

Word on the street is that NHL, NBC, and Versus have reached a mega 10 year deal.

I keep missing the NHL on ABC but maybe it was watching all those Red Wings games on ABC as a kid, or Gary Thorne. Don't really have a problem with this.

Not just word on the street; it's confirmed.  Ugh.  As a person who thinks that the production that both NBC and Versus puts on, this is awful.  Here's why: "Between them, NBC and Versus will telecast 100 exclusive regular-season games, nearly double this just-completed regular season total."  Nothing like totally sticking it to the people who shell out money for CI who will now get less games on CI for, likely, even more money.
