OT - Raise $$$ for DMUM & Mott's at the click of a button

Submitted by JimBobTressel on

speaking as a dmum alum, I thought I'd pass this along:

http://www.facebook.com/umcreditunion

UM Credit Union is offering a special where they will donate $1 for every Facebook "Like" they get to their Facebook Page.

The money goes to DMUM (Dance Marathon for University of Michigan). Considering the organization exists entirely to raise money for charity (Mott's Children Hospital), its all very easy to give both organizations your support at the press of a button.

Please click the like button and help things along. Thank you for your support

My family has already utilized the new Mott hospital.  My son was hospitalized for three days and the care was outstanding.  UofM has always been excellent in their ped's departments.

Several family members work at Mott, it's an awesome cause, and I owe the credit union for being the cause of their shutdown a couple years ago  when they built the footings for the underground garage downtown. Mainly, it's a great cause.

Can someone give me the rationale behind why Dance Marathon had to change their name? UMDM has such a better look and sound to it than DMUM.

Former Dancer, forever changed by the experience.

Bando,

The name change was due to a legal issue.  DM operates both as a student organization affiliated with the University and as an independent, tax-exempt organization (commonly known as a 501(c)(3) organization).  The University, as I'm sure you figured out, is also a tax-exempt organization.  The name "University of Michigan Dance Marathon" raised some issues about whether it implied that the University "owned" the organization, which would be a violation of 501(c)(3) status (each organization incorporated as a tax-exempt organization must be independent, one cannot control the other).  To ensure there would be no challenge to either organization's tax-exempt status, DM had the option of relinquishing significant control of the organization and operating as a part of the University under the University's rules and structure as a tax-exempt organization or changing the name slightly and maintaining full control of the operation of the organization.  They chose the latter, thus the name change.
