OT: Popular Cars by State
Way OT, but it is interesting that the most popular car by state seems to roughly break down by conference lines.
Figures the most popular car for half the SEC is a Camry. I think we should add Kentucky and W.V. to the Big Ten based on this.

I've lived in Texas during the drought and this extreme winter here. Ford is the way to go. No question.

I'll take a symmetrical all wheel drive Japanese or German import with a lower center of gravity when the roads are slick and ice covered.
February 21st, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
So long as the German import is AWD. By brother has a BMW rwd and the thing in a light snow was like on old LTD II w had as a kid. And it had good tires.
I'm in Traverse City. We see a fairly big mix, but lots of Jeeps and Subies. I've got a commander and a Five hundred AWD, both are very nice.

Yeah I've never been particularly impressed by BMW. Give me an Audi or a Subaru any day.
February 21st, 2015 at 10:32 AM ^
Both are nice. I want to get eyes on the new Allroad.

I never owned an Audi, but the few friends that had one traded them in due to high maintenance costs...
February 21st, 2015 at 2:09 PM ^
You will get that with any German car. It is the reason I prefer to own Japanese myself.
February 21st, 2015 at 3:20 PM ^
Very true. But I will say, despite increased reliability across the board, one complaint I have ian high costs in general. A lady I work with bought a Dodge Durango with one of the fancy keys. It costs $250 to replace.
I like the increased reliability. I would rather have a $5 key.

I live in west Michigan and my Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the nicest SUVs I have owned over the years. And it's great in the snow.

fords, particularly super-duty ford pick-ups rule the day up there and have for decades. chevy would be second and you'd also have to give a hat-tip to subaru somewhere in there. curious about sampling methodology.

Probably new car sales in 14. Also remember that Fairbanks and Anchorage will skew the results, because the number of new sales is very small outside of the metro areas.

According to the accompanying article, it was registrations, not sales.
(edit: which I just noticed is not that easy to find in the OP. But there's an article.)

The shift from almost completely domestic to lots of Japanese cars was one of the most striking differences when I moved from Michigan to Georgia years ago. I don't remember there being a Honda/Toyota/Nissan dealership anywhere around Dearborn when I was growing up, but when I moved to Georgia there were several in close proximity to where I lived. With that said, the results shown on this map are not surprising.

If you don't own the largest American car you can afford, I question your patriotism.
February 21st, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
I see we decided against the Wagon Queen Family Truckster despite the high-pressure sales technique, eh? Probably a move for the better. This was a far more reliable car anyway. Still would have opted for te faux wood paneling though.

When you say American car, do you mean a car mostly made in America, or car company headquartered in America?
February 21st, 2015 at 1:52 PM ^
You are officially "that guy."
Congrats!
February 21st, 2015 at 4:46 PM ^
I've made this point a couple of times so I should probably stop but obviously every car in the US impacts some US employee regardless of who the manufacturer is (presumably the car salesperson is located here). The question is the numbers -- generally domestic manufactuers employee significantly more people domestically per sale than their foreign counterparts.

I live in CT and I've seen maybe 1-2 Outbacks in my 17 years here
February 21st, 2015 at 9:27 AM ^
.. and every other car was a Subaru it seemed... I realize most of the population lives in eastern MA, but just didn't surprise me to see a state in the NE area that has lots of Subarus like CT.
February 21st, 2015 at 9:26 AM ^

February 21st, 2015 at 9:53 AM ^
No, I haven't... but I am now on a mission to take notice of how often I see Subarus

as someone who lives adjactent to northern New England, I will say that EVERYONE in VT (and thus likely NH & ME) has a Subaru. Everyone. The base models tend to be AWD making them the cheapest for AWD shoppers in the utility/wagon/family vehicle class.
And yes, in NYS it's all about Honda. incredible resale value. Incredible
February 21st, 2015 at 10:00 AM ^
I'm in Vermont and I swear everyone is required to drive a Subaru. Prius is a close second if you live near Dartmouth.
February 21st, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
Hilarious. My first thought when I saw this was how is it possible Vermont didn't come out Suburu. Driving a non-Suburu there is like driving a Datsun in Detroit in the early '80s -- you stand out, and you feel kind of worried.
