OT: Pokemon Go- have you played it?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Although it's nowhere near popular as the original craze back when I was a little kid and hooked like every kid in America, this game is pretty popular. For better or worse, as accidents pile up.

I'm curious to see how many on here have or are actively playing it. I love it because I'm getting some needed exercise while playing.

I caught a Pikachu on I-75 on Saturday. I was in the passenger seat.

I've seen people who are doing pub crawl Pokemon things. And I know all the bars in downtown Ann Arbor are within distance of a Pokestop, and they were all lured when I was out drinking last week.

My wife wandered the backyard looking for a Pidgey the other day, all this while holding a small glass of Jack. It is entirely possible to drink while playing, although I have no idea - nor do I particularly wish to know - what you could pick up in this game should you opt to imbibe too generously. This game will be a disaster for someone after a football game this fall, no?

Amazing game. Went down town and connected with at least 100 other people playing. It's amazing how quickly and on a large scale it's brought people together. Team Instinct baby.

This game was designed to aid in natural selection judging by the accidents and deaths experienced by players. At 50 I've already won the natural selection game so I'll stick with scotch and smh at this.

Back in the day I caught them all. I still have my cards too. After reading about Pokemon Go rediculousness for a week, and going on walks in the park and seeing people playing it, while sitting at my desk all of a sudden it hit me that "wait--lol, why don't you download it too??".

So I did, but then it said I couldn't sign up for an account because of high volume of people signing up (and I refuse to use my gmail ID), so never tried it.

I work on a college campus, so it's really easy to play. If you go to any  pokestop on campus (a place usually located by a monument where you can get supplies and catch pokemon) there are usually 10 to sometimes as high as 30 people there at a time. I think it's great. As soon as work is done, I can get out walk around and just enjoy a nice day. It's also a good way to meet people.

I'm level 22. Got a bunch of Pokemon over 1,000 cp. FWM. Also been meeting some interesting people. This game is truly beneficial for some of these people who don't ever get out and associate with others.

I was too old when the originals came out, but my kids are into this one and got me hooked. it's getting us out more and finding things and business we never would have visited otherwise

I missed it when I was younger and have zero interest in it now. I'm glad people are enjoying, HOWEVA

If one more person drives around my neighborhood (staring at their phone) the wrong way down a one way street, I'm going to fucking lose it. It's happened 5-6 times since the game came out. There are lots of kids in my neighborhood.

Haven't tried it. Maybe I will. But I honestly don't really want to play with other people. I'm just not good enough at them. I liked to play the originals just whenever I wanted and not have to go anywhere for them. And do I really need another thing to get caught up in? Ah, I'll probably end up trying it.

Tried it for 3 minutes to make sure there weren't any Pokemon stops, gyms, lures, hangouts, chills, kiosks, fire circles, or amusements parks in my back yard.

I'd love to say of course not because it seems mind numbingly stupid.  But my parents thought playing genesis, N64 and Playstation was stupid, and I loved doing it, so I'm torn.

I guess my answer is as long as nobody is walking through my yard or in front of my car then do whatever the hell you want.  However, I was very upset when I read that people were playing it at Arlington Cemetary.

I just wish South Park was on right now because I'm sure there would be a hilarious episode about it this week.

...I played PokemonGo before it was cool.  As in, Ingress, a similar augmented-reality GPS phone game.  It's a capture-the-flag sci-fi-themed game where two teams (a blue and a green team) complete to capture portals.  For anyone who's played Pokemon, your gym locations have almost a one-for-one correspondence with "portals" since the two games were made by the same company, Niantic.  You can link three portals your team controls to make a field, which captures the triangular area between the three portals for your team (untl the otherside inevitably breaks your field)

So, even though I don't play Pokemon, I have a very good guess where you'll find PokeGyms in your area - any church, any plaque in a park, any  statue - basically, if anyone as ever used a landmark to give someone else directions somewhere, it's probably a PokeGym.  The most amusing irony to me was the thought of how several atheist/agnostic millenials are now better informed where their town's churches are than their church-going parents.

Ingress is a bit more niche than Pokemon and, as such, anyone who plays it probably isn't entirely right in the head.  Players have coordinated to do such things as cover the entire state of Utah for the Resistance (blue) team, or worked cross-faction to pay tribute to Prince in Minneapolis.

I only played Ingress for 10 months because it had a way of turning a ten-minute grocery run into a two-hour farming/fielding trip and because my phone battery kept crying 'No mas' and I'm gettin' too old for this shit, as Riggs would say.  It's still a good way to get out of the house and walk around your hood.  I have no intention of playing PokemonGo since Pokemon was after my time, but as long as you're not causing your death or anyone else's, the game is fine.  Hell, we all congregate here on-line everyday to parse the meaning of a high school athlete's Twitter feed, so who are we to judge how other people get their jollies?
