OT: Paterno knew of Sandusky abuse in 1976

The PSU cultists will still defend him.

A new bombshell dropped in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal Thursday.

It came in the form of a line in a court order on a related insurance coverage case involving Penn State, and its ramifications can't immediately be gauged.

But that line was eye-popping in itself.

The line in question states that one of Penn State's insurers has claimed "in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU's Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky."

Holy. Shit. This is a real post on the topic I just saw on the PSU Rivals message board: "It appears that statutory rape did occur in some cases. But the claim that the molestation/rape occurred with "young boys" is misleading. Some of the grooming started as young as 8 years old, but the "boys" were generally older (12 or older)." I don't know what more to say...

That is absolutely priceless.

Oh, so the kid getting raped by an old man is 12 instead of 8. Well, then. That changes EVERYTHING!!

Good grief.

They should keep Paterno's statue. But place it in a 180 degree angle from where people can see it. After all, that is his legacy, turning his back on all those little boys.

"An allegation now about an alleged event 40 years ago, as represented by a single line in a court document regarding an insurance issue, with no corroborating evidence, does not change the facts. Joe Paterno did not, at any time, cover up conduct by Jerry Sandusky."

Bullshit. Fuck you Joe, and fuck you Jerry. Horrible humans. What a complete crock of shit. How Penn State was not held totally accountable for this atrocity is beyond me.

After watching the movie Spotlight. I had a feeling that this could be even worse for PSU if someone took the time to investigate in the same manner.

Just sick.

I hope one of these candlelight vigils they hold after games burns the whole fucking town down. That's what those inbred Appalachian wastes of oxygen deserve for idolizing this asshole. He should have died years ago. Apparently 40. Piece of shit. Sandusky is a clinically diagnosed batshit crazy rapist. Paterno was in his right mind and protected this guy. Wanna guess which one I think is worse?

Ask yourself, how does Jerry Sandusky go from being the DC at a powerhouse like penn state, at a time when they had great defenses ("Linebacker U", etc.) to being retired???  No other school offered him a job and he cared not to accept or pursue, but rather go and retire and be more involved in his boys' "charity".

I think the point was that very few coaches go from "HC in waiting" behind a legend to retired with no other offers -- seemingly overnight -- without something happening. Part of the assumed guilt against Paterno was that he must have pushed out Sandusky for "that" reason yet allowed him to retain access to the facilities which led to later abuses.

Not shocking. Penn State slipped below Ohio State and Michigan State when this story broke. The acts themselves were heinous but the fact that they continure to defend pedophiles is just deplorable.

If Paterno came to Michigan, he could have easily brought Sandusky here.

You can be sure that Sandusky had his "problem" at that time.  I wonder if being at Michigan would have made a difference in terms of what they thought they could cover up.  Penn State is isolated in both geography and culture in a way that Ann Arbor is not.

We'll never know for sure.

it more likely that he would have brought Sandusky here.

It's easy to make the mistake of thinking horrible things can't happen here, (insert place). PSU isn't the only place where football has too much influence. At the same time, not many places are dominated by a single school like the region around PSU. Add in the geographic isolation and the small town host. Then consider that the growth of the school largely coincided with Paterno's tenure. PSU wasn't even a university until the 1950s. The school's identity was closely tied to Paterno and football.

These were factors that exist in very few places in the country. We were lucky not to have Paterno and Sandusky in Ann Arbor. I don't doubt they would have been the same. I do find it hard to believe a cover up could have been pulled off here for very long. I bet there would have been an attempt at one though, and it would have been messy.

This is absolutely shameful. The wellbeing of those young men should have been first and foremost in all of their minds. I wouldn't send my kid to a school that even hesitated at all when faced when these sorts of reports, let alone conceal it for decades. The entire institution should be ashamed of the reputation they football team has earned them.

Agree that all of Paterno's on-field accomplishments need to be wiped from the record books.  He should be remembered for nothing other than his protecting a monster for 40 years.  I would say Penn State should be given the death penalty, but they're gonna be such an easy win for us for the foreseeable future that it's hard for me to want them gone.

So an insurance company uncovered a case of child abuse (I would say alledged but in light of later revelations I won't), and PSU did not have the ability to uncover the same facts? Penn State would have been aware institutionally of that insurance report. I do not see a way that PSU was not intentionally vile for more than a half century.
