OT: One Condiment, Forever

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on

Everything I eat is a vehicle for condiments. Thus, I was presented a real conundrum last night at dinner: if I had to live the rest of my life and only had one condiment to use, which would I choose?

Please be as specific as possible instead of categorical (i.e. saying Frank's instead of hot sauce). "Condiments" by nature is is pretty broad, but for the fun of it we can include dressings, dips, things that can be squeezed, ladeled, spooned, etc.

My favorite Hidden Valley Ranch is the stuff that comes powdered in packets and you have to add buttermilk and mayonnaise and mix it yourself. It's a little thinner than the stuff in the bottle and it feels somewhat more real to me, even though it probably isn't.

A1, Tabasco, or mustard. Damn. If I skip mustard then coney dogs will never be the same. A1 is that perfect blend of spice, and goes great on any burger, but Tabasco had that delicious, classic flavor, even though it's not very hot, it still has heat has

Real Mexican sour cream. I don't know what it is but it's fantastic. Second would be clotted cream because it's awesome and life with one condiment isn't worth living.

in my house currently, there is no shortage of cholula, tabasco (red, green and chipotle) Frank's, sriracha, and old Louisiana, but my new favorite is Melinda's habanero xxxtra hot. It sounds like it'll melt your face, but it's still enjoyable and the flavor is fantastic.

Although I'm not sure it would be my #1, but I'm surprised we haven't heard 1000 Island yet.  I LOVE that stuff.  I'm a big burger guy and nothing makes a burger great better than thousand island dressing.  It also goes well on sandwiches.  And salads, obviously.

Talking burgers, it's gotta be olive sauce, or whatever you call the spread on an olive burger.  I make it myself by mixing chopped green olives and mayo (and/or cream cheese can play role also).  I don't know if olive burgers are just a midwest thing (and still not that common) or what.  Haven't seen them anywhere in NE.  That olive briney flavor in  the mayo delivery vehicle is the perfect compliment to a quality char-grilled burger.  Should be on every burger joint menu.

Grey Poupon rules.

But for something off the beaten path, from the land of chutney, Maya Kaimal's Spicy Ketchup is fantastic.

Which reminds me - that bright green chutney that all Indian places seem to provide with samosas and such, deserves a big mention.
