OT- Olympics Day 8 Thread (SPOILERS are alive and well and in this thread)
Today in a womans 100m dash heat, there were runners from both Libya and Afganistan. Neither woman qualified for the next round, but both have opened doors for girls and women in both countries, it was very cool to see.
Anyway, here is the thread for Olympic discussion, with spoilers.
Fed vs Murray, GO FED!
In case you didn't know, the goal keeper for the US women's water polo team is Betsy Armstrong, an aluma of U of Michigan. She is also the daughter of Thomas Armstong, an engineering professor at UM.
. . . and she's also a future U-M assistant coach (and a Huron High grad). (Her first name is Betsey, by the way.)
Michael Phelps, a pretty darn good swimmer:
In a way Phelps was the purest kind of student-athlete - we weren't allowed to give him an athletic scholarship (he'd already turned pro) so he just went to school here, paid his own tuition, and happened to be an Olympic athlete as well.
This can't be it for him. I have a feeling he'll pull an MJ and come out of retirement for 2016. He's too good to stay away from competition permanently.
He's rich, he's done everything he can, he has no mountains left to climb. He's done.
And he looks like he's having a blast, no doubt knowing that he has a permanent vacation coming up.
Well, I don't mean that he'd just wake up in the spring of 2016 and decide to come back - or that he'd try to compete in eight events again. What I could see is him in like 2014 deciding that maybe he could focus on one particular event - like the 200 fly - and see if he could win it once more.
A lot of Olympians say that "these are going to be my last Olympics", and then come back 4 years later. It's not unheard of at all. Some make it, off the top of my head: Brendan Hansen, Misty Mae-Treanor/Kerry Walsh ( I think Walsh was originally coming back with another partner). A lot of the people trying to make comebacks don't qualify off the top of my head, Shawn Johnson.
Wearing a Nick Sheridan jersey
He wore 8 for his 8 golds in Bejing
So did Nick Sheridan.

UM runners Nate Brannen and Nick Willis both made it to the 1500 semifinals today, Willis winning his heat. Semifinals are on Sunday, with the finals on Tuesday. Nice to see both of these guys do well, hope they keep moving up!
Finally getting to the running events! I have been waiting for this all week. Also, anyone see Dibaba bust out a 60 second final lap in the 10k? Thats incredible.
