OT - The Northern Lights Are out Tonight

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I was putting stuff on the grill just now and out of habit looked to the north and I have to tell you, the Northern Lights are out right now something fierce.  They are to the west and north  but sometimes when it starts this good it will get crazy good.   They were not out when we were doing barn chores about an hour ago, but man, they are there now.  For those who have not seen them I recommend you get to a relatively dark place and take a look.  You won't be disappointed.

EDIT:  They are now about 270 degrees around the farm - from SW, swinging all the way around north to the SE.

Not sure if you are aware, but anyone south of traverse city area typically won't see the northern lights in full force like you see them. I have slept outside in NW Ontario and watched them cover the sky though. Top 10 moment for me

About 15 years ago I was fishing from the shore on Belleville Lake at night with my cousin in August. We saw the meteor shower and the northern lights. It was bizarre because it lasted for hours and both were crystal clear. I haven't seen anything close to That since then. That was a top 10 night for me as well. We didn't catch a single fish that night.

circle once while I was in the Navy. Darkened flight deck + 360° of pitch black ocean + northern latitudes = one hell of a light show from the northern lights. 30 years ago and I will never forget it.

I crossed the Circle many times (5 or 6), but never saw the Lights.  Well, the lighthouse lights of the Kola Penisula, but not the northern lights.

The best Northern Light show I ever saw was on a fishing trip in Ontario.  Awesome.

The snow here in Romulus is crossing the paths of the LED lights around the apartments out in front of the subdivision that you sort of get the effect of light dancing in the sky, but then the snow stops occasionally and you just see the hired security for the complex lighting up by the dumpster and the effect is ruined.

We can see them pretty well from Traverse city even through a decent snowfall. Lots of bright pink to the NW with flashes of green. Skies are not clear but you can definitely see the intensity flaring through the snow....very cool!

No lights in Northville tonight.  On the bright side though i'm heading to Africa this week and will see the Southern Cross and other Southern Hemisphere constellations.  Can't wait.

had the 5 youngest out there with me and as the saying goes, 'many hands makes for light work'.  it provides a lot of food for us and others.  the kids get the whole work ethic thing, too.

of the Northern Lights around 9:30 pm here in SW Michigan; otherwise it's been constant lake-effect snow (4" so far) each time I've checked the sky. Although the Aurora Borealis is pretty rare this far south in Michigan, I've still seen a few impressive displays here over the years---just not tonight.

I keep a webcam trained on Mullet Lake and haven't seen the sun for weeks. You must have found a break in the clouds. If/when I can move up there I may need a month in FLA to avoid SAD.
