Backed up by some nastiness and strong interior play surely can't be a bad thing in detroit. I'm 33 and can't remember detroit ever being tough and nasty to the rest of the league. I'm for it.

I logged in just to +1 you.  Just because you have a different opinion than hart20, it does not mean he should be negged.  Fairley didn't exactly exemplify a model player or student at Auburn.

Now that he plays for the Lions, this is out of bounds?  Or is a whole 'cultural' thing?

Ignorant people with opinions are bad enough.  Ignorant people with opinions who think they are final and unquestionable word? C'mon... I love MGoBlog, but if you negged this, you are the problem.  It's well known this guy has an attitude problem.  Please explain the problem in pointing that out.

Oh, and please correct any vocabulary issues.  I been drinkin'.

try out for a certain Pro team, but he didn't want to try out for them, so he said "no" and didn't show up. That really started the attitude criticism train, but I like that attitude. He tried out for a ton of teams, but a bunch of teams just want you to dance for them and jump through hoops (and at times ask you if your mother is a prostitute.) He gets strange criticism too, "He plays too hard! He takes plays off!" To me, he wins Lombardi trophies. I loved it when Suh tried to remove Delhommes head for Detroit, I'll love it when he and Fairley do it together.

Is this a positive comparison as in when Haynesworth was an unstoppable force (under our coach mind you) or negative as in Haynesworth whining and giving up in Washington?

I'm not a Fairley fan with part of that being I dislike Auburn and part being his shady path into college and then his blantant attempts to hurt people after the whistle but he is a good football player. I hope he tears it up and the Lions D crushes offenses but I also won't be mad at the league if he gets suspended for playing dirty

Classic case of not liking him on another team, but as a lion i'm all in for the Suh-Fairley combo. Did anyone in there right mind like Rasheed Wallace before he became a piston, or Chris Chelios before he became a red wing?

He might have some attitude problems but with Vanden Bosch and Suh helping him along the way i'm sure he will be just fine.

Also the Lions look to have a deal with Eric Wright, CB from the browns. They still need to resign Houston but overall a solid player.

This is what I'm hoping for.  Suh especially seems like a really good character guy to have on the team, so hopefully hanging out with him will help Fairley to clean up his behavior on the field.

A lot of people are ripping this guy's supposed "work ethic" and "attitude" issues, and I agree that there is some cause for concern, but isn't that why he fell to us? Wasn't he initially projected as one of the top picks, but due to some concerns over the issues we're discussing he fell? It may have been a risk, but I think it will be a good environment for him. Him and Suh paired up equals two nast D-Linemen.

was almost always voted at the top of the "dirtiest players" list by players, yet he was a perennial AllPro, and was also a player rep since 99, on the Union executive commitee since 02, and the President of the NFLPA from 08 till after retirement. Maybe he was a dirty player, maybe he was the dirtiest player, but I'd jump at the chance for him to have been the Lions Center, and now that he's coaching Blake Bars in high school I'm his biggest fan.

I haven't seen anything to indicate Fairly has an attitude problem.  Even if he does I am completely confident that Schwartz, Suh, Vanden Bosch and others will keep him in line.

And there are a few examples of him playing beyond the whistle, but it was not a constant issue with him and I am not worried about it at all.

I think a Hayensworth comparison is off-base.  Fairly is coming in hungry and with a chip on his shoulder from dropping down so much, and having the talent and leadership on the D-line that we do will keep him motivated, assuming he isn't already.

I can forgive his past junk, if he can play fairley well for the Lions. I want to see a tough, no-nonsense worker. I hope Kyle V and Suh can help him stay on track.

Great, I'm glad this is all sorted. Go out and play football now.

Him and Suh are going to destroy.

People comparing him to Haynesworth need to remember that Suh is playing next to him. No way he can get a head as big as Haynesworth with Suh next to him.

Also, I think the coaching he gets with the Lions will be superior to his college coaching, especially as regards character.

My big concern is that if he is pulling the dirty stuff he'll get chop-blocked into a short career.

Schwartz, VB, and Suh will set him straight.  I've heard about no on the field issues or anything about how he got into school (and really who gives a shit? if you want to play in the league what are your options?)

Edit: iPhone posted a blank reply, but I do have something to say.

Let's give the guy, oh, I don't know, the opportunity to suit up for the Lions before we pass a big time judgment on him. Haynesworth certainly has his issues, but is immensely talented.  Enough so that the revered Bellicheck has found it fit to bring him in.  And at this point, Fairley hasn't missed a practice or held out or whined or dogged it.

Doesn't Suh play with that same mean streak? Come on, you want that from interior lineman as long as their not getting flagged. Remember Suh's play against Jake Delhome? (totally screwed his name) Or how he rag dolled D. Mcnab? And how funny was it when he swatted S. Moss away like a fly? Just to name a few but we love Suh for playing this way. Let's embrace Fairley the same way guys.
