no offense to you with this, but just as a discussion piece, I cannot figure out what people like so much about The Walking Dead.  It is ground that has been covered before and much better in movies like 28 Days Later and countless others.  I don't understand what The Walking Dead brings to the table.  I don't find much to invest in with the characters, the actions scenes are decent, at best, and the zombies are fairly stock.  I can appreciate that it is good TV, but to put it in the same class as A Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and some other modern TV classics?  I just don't see it.

Edit: Yes, Ken 725.  Well said.  I would trade the entire Walking Dead franchise for another Game of Thrones trailer.

ijohn, you and ken can have your 1 minute of GoT trailer on your desert island together. Most of the rest of us are able to enjoy both series, and will anxiously await the reveal of whose cranium Negan smashed in.

GoT is epic in a way television never has been before for the most part, based upon pretty amazing source material, and taking it beyond the scope of Martin's writings often and sometimes importantly.

But the simple up-close truth - the sweaty proximity of flesh eating walkers and just plain bad people, ready to take advantage of good folks in the zombie apocalypse - that's a true human drama. If you watch the show (and maybe if you're a reader, I'm not), it's the human conflict that makes the show, that makes you realize how many people you've known on your path through life that would be heroic in such times, and how many you meet that would be quick to go evil.

And for the record - The Wire is the highest expression of the form of television made yet, and it's real hard to think of anything passing it any time soon..

can convince me that Breaking Bad was not the best television show that has ever been on to date.  Going into the second half of season 5, I think there could still be debate.  However, Confessions, Ozymandius, and Granite State left absolutely no doubt.  As of this moment, Breaking Bad is the best television show of all time.

I really liked the first season but I keep forgetting to watch the second. I've heard good things, but it feels like the chatter around the show has really died down after the first season wrapped up.

If you like Rectify, check out Top of the Lake. Sundance channel has some really good shows, they just don't get the publicity like the other networks.

It's not appointment television like GoT, but I dvr it and watch it whenever. I identify with some of the characters and that blonde secretary looks like my wife did when I met her. I'm also over the walking dead. It's just not a well written or acted show. And slow zombies as a concept are just not that scary. Seems that we'd be able to defeat them easily. Those 28 days later rage virus zombies were scary as fuck though.

Sounds like I need to give GoT another chance. I know its extremely popular, and my brother in law loves it. I watched one episode, but it started out very slow (I think the scene was 2 younger girls walking in the woods or something). I considered reading the books, but not sure if I should invest the time in the show instead?

I still enjoy TWD quite a bit - I think the plots are pretty good (although not as good as the comics), but I do agree that the action scenes leave something to be desired, especially when fighting against other living people. I think there is decent character development, and its not like the acting is terrible, IMHO. I'm even fine with slow zombies, its different that the 28 days later style, but that has been done to death, too.

My advice for the Vinyl show runners - more Ray Romano and fewer scenes of Cannavale snorting cocaine. It seems like every fifteen minutes there's a zoomed out shot of Richie Finestra, he snorts something off his desk, the camera zooms in and he does some exaggerated, "Whoooo" face. I get it, drugs make you high. How about we develop some other story lines. And the other thing I don't like is sometimes they use real people (Elvis, etc.) and sometimes they use fake groups that suck (the Nasty Bits.) The musical quality is really hit or miss for a show about the recording industry.

I wanted the same thing for Joffrey but that bastard was simply poisoned. That said, the actors who play Joffrey and Ramsey doa PHENOMENAL job. If you truly hate a character, it's usually because the actor is doing very well and those two really nailed the bad boy character.

that Joffrey was fairly nuanced, even if young and very evil.  But when I am watching (and reading) Ramsey scenes, he seems unrealistically and specifically just evil to the extent that I cannot really take him seriously.  He is a compelling character but he feels a little contrived to me.  Roose on the other hand is endlessly fascinating.  I would like a little more Roose and a little less Ramsey on my Game of Thrones.

I feel like they were doing a good job showing how Ramsey was trying to "better himself" by moving on from a bastard to someone in the royal line. However he completely backslid when he started mistreating Sansa that alienated her more and accomplished nothing. He should have been more concerned about what's best for him to keep his place then just getting his torture kicks.

I'm'a try to go into the submarine where GoT is concerned this year.  Want the book.  No GoT for me til the book comes out, whether that's a few more months or a few more years.
