OT: Nebraska loses another offensive lineman, Klachko transfers to Illinois
New Illinois head coach Tim Beckman seems to have found a new recruiting tactic, getting transfers from other B1G schools, and Nebraska seems to be losing linemen weekly, as they lost their 2nd in successive weeks.
Ryan Klachko transferring to Illinois
Yesterday, Nebraska offensive lineman Ryan Klachko, a RS-freshman from Springfield, IL transferred and will sit out the 2012-2013 season. He was a 4* recruit out of HS last year.
Last week the Illini added Penn State transfer Ryan Nowicki to their offensive line. Nowicki is eligible this season.
Over the weekend, offensive lineman Tyler Moore, 4*, left Nebraska and will take semester off then consider a return to Nebraska or FSU and UF.

so Illinoise is now the Iowa State bball of college football?

Bielema's thing is grad year transfers. Beckman is carving out the intra-conference underclassmen transfer niche.

So this kid will have to pay his own way at Illinois then. Not a smart financial move, necessarily. If he wanted to be closer to home, he could have gone to Purdue or Wisconsin for free.

Oh, I didn't know that.

What do all these transfers do for our chances against Nebraska this year?
August 16th, 2012 at 1:08 PM ^
Are you referring to the choice between (A) steamrolling them
(B) crushing them
or (C) merely beating them?
They are a tough team, but no where near as intimidating as everyone thought they were
coming into the B1G. They were expected to dominate, but then reality set in.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:24 PM ^
The game this year will be at Nebraska at night, increasing their chances of beating Michigan by 33% (you know, give or take a percentage point).

I agree the hype they got entering the Big Ten was nauseating but that game still makes me nervous, especially at night.
They lost at home to Northwestern last year but they also completely shut down MSU at home. You never know which team will show up.
August 16th, 2012 at 4:41 PM ^
I think the main thing that mislead them was that Nebraska played for the XII title 2 straight years prior to entering the B1G and lost the two games by a total of 4 points. So it was fairly reasonable to assume we'd be ia favorite immediately upon entering the B1G.
I should add that most Nebraska fans DIDN'T have such high expectations. We knew that we had a young team and by far the conference's toughest schedule, among other things.
We expect to compete for the championship this year, and in 2013 I think most Nebraska fans expect to win it......OSU and Wisconsin rotate off the schedule and we'll have an expereiced team with 2 years of league play under our belts.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:53 PM ^
That's cute that Nebraska fans expect to win the league in 2013. Do you remember that Michigan is still in their division and they have to play in Ann Arbor? Do they know that even if the make it to the championship game they'll likely have to play OSU?
I appreciate your input on the board, but Nebraska does not have the talent to win the Big Ten in any of the next few years.
EDIT: How accurate is this: http://nebraska.rivals.com/cdepthtext.asp Because according to that, you guys have a lot of seniors slated to start this fall (3OL plus your TE and Burkhead, 3 DL, all 3 LB, 3 DBs, plus a lot of backups). It's hard to tell is that's up to date, and I don't know enough about Neb to tell one way or another.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:56 PM ^
so no disrepect to Michigan or anyone else.
And I think given the factors I mentioned it's a pretty reasonable expectation. Purdue and Illinois replacing Wisky and OSU.......PSU much weaker.....Senior team and qb....3rd year in league.
We were 5-3 last year without any of those factors....what do you think it would be worth in the WL record?
Here's another: Michigan's first year w/o Denard.
August 16th, 2012 at 6:08 PM ^
Sure, you replace Wisconsin with a worse team (you can't really count OSU since that was a win for you last year anyway). You still have to play Michigan, MSU and Iowa, and probably only lose one of those (plus getting past the Northwesterns of the world).
Will you have a senior team in 2013? Looking at the depth chart I linked to suggest you'll be losing a lot of talent after this fall, including Burkhead who is your work horse, and your recruiting hasn't been conference champ level the last couple of years either.
August 16th, 2012 at 6:42 PM ^
and of course we still have this season to play!
Recruiting wise, really Nebraska has seldom been world-beating even with our championship teams, and never linked recruiting stars with our team's success.
August 16th, 2012 at 6:48 PM ^
That's fine, but you're in the Big Ten now, it's not the 90s and you don't have Tom Osbourne.
It would have been interesting to see how Nebraska would have done in the 90s playing in the Big Ten, because M, OSU and PSU in the 90s were way better than Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado.

first guy's team that wins the Leaders, gets a free beer compliments of the other.
first to win the B1G gets a six-pack.

Done. Can you buy Oberon in Chicago? Otherwise, I want that one with the goose head on the tap.
August 16th, 2012 at 7:39 PM ^
I've never had a Nebraska friend before.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:10 PM ^
I am guessing that mostly it hurts their depth on the line. If they run into some injuries it could end up making a difference.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
Prior to fall camp, Tyler Moore was projected to start at LT. Losing your starting left tackle could make a pretty big impact depending on your depth at OL. As far as I know, Klachko was not projected to be in the 2-deep this year, but losing 2 viable OL is never good.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
They really aren't that good. I don't know why most chalk it up as a loss.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
1) It's in Lincoln.
2) It's a night game.
3) They're a solid team. I don't think that our last game against them was really all that representative of their ability.
Automatic loss? Probably not. A tough game? Absolutely.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:48 PM ^
I think it's because, despite ending with an 11-2 record last year, we didn't really play that well on the road. Until we overcome that hurdle, people are generally going to be nervous about any road game against decent opponents.
August 16th, 2012 at 2:14 PM ^
I couldn't believe how awful a passer he is. It's amazing that Nebraska can beat any good team with him at QB. Sure, it will be tough to play there, but Martinez? Control that RB and you should win the game wherever it is played.

What's going on in Lincoln? Losing two linemen in a week's time, right when camp is starting, seems curious.

The drought is affecting corn supplies and Nebraska Lineman need their corn.
August 16th, 2012 at 4:32 PM ^
1. Homesick
2. Chemistry
Neither were starters, but certainly it doesn't help depth.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
As pointed out above, Moore = starting left tackle.
August 16th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
Although Klachko was not in any two deep that I had when I did the diaries (Moore definitely was), this is chipping away at OL depth in Nebraska all the same, I would think. Granted, if you look at the roster on the official site, they list 27 (accounting for Klachko and Moore departing) players as offensive linemen (it doesn't get as detailed as guards and tackles), but it probably hurts down the road certainly - 13 of the 27 listed OLs are underclassmen.

Moore started four games in 2011 for Nebraska and played in nine total. He was the front runner for and expected to be the starting left tackle.

What is wrong with accepting transfers from another B1G school? Some people suggest this is somehow sketchy.
We try to pry away B1G commitments all the time. But once they join a school, it's considered "ungentlemanly" to accept a transfer? Are you in favor of the Gentleman's Agreement that nobody subscribes to?
I get it. The 5 or 6 IL coaches at Penn State gave them a bad rep. But let's just be objective for a moment and not go down the road of saying "every other coach is dirty but ours." Beckman is starting at a new program and trying to build up the talent. I don't think he's done anything wrong.
I'm not suggesting this particular thread is hitting Beckman too hard. But just in general.

I do not know the man but he sure seems like a strange man.....of course he did play for ohio technical institute back in the day. I just have this feeling that he will not make Nebraska any more successful than they are now, by that I mean a perpetual 4 loss team
August 16th, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
He does come across like a tool every so often. But he is a former Buckeye so no explanation needed.
Here's an early shot of him getting burned by Greg McMurtry in Columbus in 1988...
