Stake's and Shake's here in Charlotte is good but I have been to In N Out before.
In-N-Out is the king. Anyone suggesting something else is just trying to be different.
chick-fil-a because the hate makes it taste better
also, any burger place that used american cheese is fucking shit, there are so many good cheeses out there, why choose american? yuck
I'm living in Cali now, and Yes, In&Out is VERY popular. However, if I want a Burger, I go with 5 Guys.
In&Out : Delicious, fresh, Belly Bomb.
5 Guys: Hearty Burger, Excellent Toppings, Best Fries
I've had it in LA, Las Vegas and Austin, TX...same quality burger every time, like it should be. I like the customization available at 5 guys (grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, relish, BBQ sauce) but its always a mess.
I feel gross leaving 5 Guys...I feel happy leaving I-N-O

However, this new spot in A2 is good:
Hunter house hamburgers on east William

In-N-Out is way better than five guys, but the wait time at In-N-Out doesn't really fit the fast-food category
I have always been a burger guy, but ever since I started raising my own grass-fed beef (serious) and my own pastured bacon (also serious) I cannot recommend anything else.
Oh, and I like to throw on a fried egg from the chickens too, and, in summer, some greens from the garden.
I realize most people can't/won't do it this way, but a truly hand-crafted burger like that blows away the $100 billion beef supply chain burger every time.
/steps down from soapbox
uses post as segway to brag about one's station in life. You were saying, "blah, blah, blah, I, blah, blah, I...
It was barely distinguishable from McDonalds. If the burger was at all fresh -- and it took damn long enough it better have been -- it was lost in a generic sugarplastic bun,
5 Guys also takes a while, but delivers the whole package. I'd take it over Shake Shack, which is the conversation we have here on the other coast.
5 Guys also wins the fries contest by a landslide.
Five Guys. I've been eating In n Out for years, and Five Guys since its inception. In and Out always had that regional cache if you lived in the midwest. But the last handful of times has been mediocre, and I figured out it's because a lot of places have caught up and surpassed them. There are made-fresh burger places all over now, so that aspect of In n Out isnt special anymore. What Five Guys has going for it is the meat. It's beefier tasting than In n Out. In n Out seems like its mostly lettuce and tomato, with a thin meat patty. I prefer the meat be the star of the burger.

It's In 'n Out and it's not even close. It is a top 10 thing I miss about living in California and being able to pay $30 to play torrey pines doesn't make the top ten. Every time I am back I have the same couple I go to. the one just off Garnett in PB or the one the other side of the 101 from amphitheatre parkway. This is literally the deep visceral connection I have with those burgers.
Five Guys is perfectly fine but every time I am done eating there my stomach takes a beating.
There is a chain in Toronto called The Burgers Priest which does a passable version of the In 'n Out burger but it's too greasy. Still though its nice to have options
I was just in California for the first time since the 1998 Rose Bowl and had my first In N Out burger expecting to see Jesus after the first bite. Not so much. Don't get me wrong, it was good. Far better than McDonalds, BK, Fatburger etc. but it didn't blow me away and yes, I thought Five Guys was better.

It was great. I don't know why, but none of the locations seem to be as good as the pre-expansion locations in Arlington and DC. Don't know if they changed their formula (cheapened them) or what, but the burgers don't taste the same to me.

Shake Shack easily beats in-and-out and five guys. When Michigan BB plays at Barclays Center, there's a Shake Shack right across the street. Check it out!
PS: Shakmeister Ale is pretty good too. I don't even think they have beer at those other places.
...if the Five Guys founder got his concept from In-N-Out. INO owners rebuffed several investors who wanted to help them go national b/c they thought the quality of the product would suffer and/or be impossible to be consistent.
That said, I like both, but I prefer INO. But they're only in CA, AZ, NV, UT, and TX. Not much help for those of us in the other 98% of the country.
Think it was Stamos who said it, but if you're in A^2, you should give Elevation a try. INO concept but everything's organic, including the hand-made milkshakes. It's not going to blow you away, but it is damn good. Organic carries a price premium, though--e.g. I recently got a double burger with swiss, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayo, plus fries and a shake for over $15.

Only INOs in TX are in the Dallas area. You think all the folks from Houston and San Antonio will be taking in INO? Just b/c INO is located in 10% of the states doesn't mean 10% of the population has access to them.
Depends on the circumstances. Five Guys burgers tend to be more fatty and juicy. In n Out burgers less so. I like Five Guys more when I have a hangover or after a night of drinking. I like In n Out if I want a great burger and I'm just hungry but prefer to be a little "healthier". Tough choice but I think I prefer Five Guys, just barely.

Yes, I've had animal style.
My CA friends would tell me how great in-n-out was and to get everything animal style. But after my first time, I was not impressed. 5 guys and in-n-out are both good. My wife makes the best burgers and I grill them at home!
In-N-Out hands down. I've only eaten at each one once, but Five Guys sucked. Their fries are horrible.
