OT: My Michigan Wedding in Ohio

Submitted by Winchester Wolverine on

I figured I'd interupt your football Saturday (but not your drinking), just for a moment, and share with you a few highlights from my wife and I's MgoWedding two days ago.

But first, a little backstory: Almost everything in our relationship, since the beginning, has revolved around Michigan sports. Our first real date was the Michigan/OSU game in 2013 (ouch, I know). We've attended tons of Michigan basketball, football, and hockey games. I even proposed in Madison after the game this season. So, it only seemed fitting that we'd have a Michigan themed wedding as well.

We dont beleive in spending thousands of dollars on a fancy, traditional wedding, so we decided to tie the knot in a small, free chapel with close family and friends. What made it special though, were our vows:

ME: "Mariah, I promise to love you almost as much as the Wolverines. From this day forward, I promise not to get annoyed over your hovering and being a helicopter mom, and promise to always wear my seatbelt. I will love you in sickness and in health, from this day forward, until death do us part, or you become an Ohio State fan."

HER: "Seth, I promise to love you as much as you love the Wolverines. From this day forward, I promise to lay off the hovering, if you promise to not do that annoying "frustrated rummage" thing you do when you're looking for something. I promise to be there with you for every game, wearing maize and blue [...]"

Other Highlights:

This all went down with our entire family in Michigan jerseys.

It was done in 10 degree weather, so it went quickly.

Annnnnndd I guaranteed my football Saturdays until the end of time:

"Mariah, do you take Seth to be your husband? Do you promise to love, honor, cherish, and leave Saturdays for football?"

Her Response: Go Blue!

Average wedding is now about $35k according to the sources that report these things. Wife and I paid about $20-25k ten years ago. Never once regretted it or wondered what I could have done with the money instead. But I’ve been to a number of small weddings and think they’re great too.

We just spent about $3k on ours. And another $4k on the honeymoon. Saved a lot by having it outside at her parents' house (who have a beautiful country home), having an evening wedding with snacks and desserts instead of dinner, and buying a relatively cheap dress. Still spent a chunk on DJ, chairs, and decor, but not near as much as we could have. And we saved a bunch with airbnb on the honeymoon but then spent a lot on Disney bc we spent half of it with the kids. All of it was totally worth it.

marrying a michigan fan, well, has to be twice as much, right?

i just hope you are fishing, hunting, skiing, etc on the honeymoon.

in case that wasn't clear.   mrs XM and i had a blast on our honeymoon and those were some of the activities on the agenda.   i highly recommend them if you can somehow fit it all in.  regardless, congrats.  marriage is wonderful, though of course not every day will be ginger bread houses and candy cane men.

I got yellow and blue colors for my wedding this past June. And we drove off as my nephews sang HTTV. And Michigan lingerie during the honeymoon. But that's from my wife who doesn't like football at all. She's learning though. Got tickets for the two of us for Christmas so we're getting there. This is a whole different level of fandom though. Congrats!
