Really forces OSU's hand. If the kid isn't getting an offer down there and is frustrated, the MSU offer could look real rosy in his eyes right now. It's entirely possible Dantonio knew he was going and knew he was unlikely to get offered and made a smooth play to gain favor.

One of the things that has really sucked about the "rivalries" is that Sparty and Brutus don't hate each other as much as they hate Michigan.  I would love to see them start at least disliking each other.  Maybe this will help.

headed to the camp and asked him to call Dantonio.

Funny how these things work. Dantonio asks an assistant to call the kid with a request that the kid call him. Is there some reason for Dantonio not to just call him directly with the offer? Building up the suspense? Hoping he makes a call during the camp like he did? Then Meyer leaves camp early to see a basketball game. If he had stuck around he might have given out offers? I'm skeptical about that, although it brought back memories of John L Smith skipping MSU's camp to go mountain climbing.

That is Mark Dantonio for you. He is what he is and he doesn't give 2 shits. I at least have to give him credit for being him. He is not fake, he really is just an asshole and embraces it.

I guess you offer when you can, but it sounds like the kid is dead-set on going to OSU if he gets an offer, so I'm not sure if this will be worth all that much in the end.  I'm not sure if you call it bush league or against any real rules, but I suspect that Meyer will take notice and might have some words/rub in a score a bit in the future.

Hey, anything you can do to start a rivalry. I remember one of my colleagues telling me how MSU is also a rivalry for OSU a couple of years back. I nodded and walked away. No point in arguing with people like that. I am surprised Dantonio didn't try this with us.

One my good friend who is OSU fan text me this "The decision for Jones to leave seemed likely after he did not report to summer workouts on Monday or Tuesday without notifying the coaches, according to sources close to the program, but that decision was not finalized or confirmed until today."

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio made a point to seek Kelly out as he was leaving SMSB to give him a pat on the back and told him they will "talk soon."

Kelly smiled as he described Dantonio as a "straight-shooter."

"He's not just going to sell you a dream, and I like that," Kelly said.

It's obvious Dantonio is practicing negative recruiting towards Michigan and Jim Harbaugh, basically saying that hope is all the program has to offer to potential recruits both schools are recruiting (see his earlier media response where he talks about results vs. hope). You hear the retarded Spartan fans now reverberating this line too in their forums and in the comment sections like Harbaugh is some rookie coach that has never accomplished anything in football.

Now Dantonio is pulling this move out of his ass. The guy has guts, I'll give him that. However, that doesn't mean he's not a douche bag because he's the biggest one around.

Maybe it's way more dirty, and maybe it's not. The young man only gave an implication of how he's being recruited versus Michigan. I suppose Dantonio isn't saying anything untruthful, seeing that our program has been horrible, and Harbaugh hasn't even coached a game. In that respect, Dantonio probably doesn't need to do that good of a job of it anyway.

I just don't like that he's taking a shot at Harbaugh and his accomplishments, like he's Brady Hoke or something. Hoke was built on hope. Harbaugh is built on results.

Unless they think Harbaugh has suddenly forgotten how to coach football, then they have no basis to say all Michigan is offering is hope. Harbaugh is a proven winner and turnaround expert everywhere he's been.

harbaugh may be too nuts and honest to get that deep into it but plenty of programs / coaches utilize the politic offer.  most play the game.  and the timing and circumstances surrounding many offers are not coincidental, it can obviously get pretty dirty

I knew some people who played for Enos at CMU and could not stand him. He was arrogant and a prick. It must be a trait of Dantonio coaches since I've heard the same thing about Narduzzi and some other position coaches.

As an MSU fan, I get it that UM fans can't stand Dantonio.  Dantonio seems to go out of his way to flip UM off when given the chance. If I were in your shoes, I'd proabably want to throw a bag of sheat at him, too.

However...MSU had the king of coaching pricks in Saban.  Not only was the guy a total ass, he had (and has) a talent for pulling an incredible loss out of a sure win.  That Alabama loss to Auburn was a replay of a few games he had at MSU.  Saban has an incredible record, but he was "meh" at MSU.  He had one decent season, and booked before the bowl game.

Simply, Dantonio is a better coach and a better guy than Nick $aban.
