OT: Most Likable College Football Coaches

Submitted by Hair Raid Offense on
Just wondering whose everyone's favorite college football coaches are...based on personality, toughness, intensity, ability to win games, sense of humor, etc.

A month or two ago mine would be:

1. Joe Paterno

2. Rich Rodriguez

3. Randy Shannon

4. Bob Green (Montana Tech)

5. Jim Harbaugh

But now 4 of those 5 aren't coaching college football anymore. I'm perplexed, the best I can come up with is:

1. Joe Paterno

2. Brady Hoke

3. Pat Fitzgerald

Am I becoming jaded, or are most coaches just doucher A-holes?

See, he does come off as a very classy and nice guy, but when it comes to doing the right thing (sitting 5 suspended players for the bowl game), he becomes just like any other coach motivated by wins alone. He could have sent a message to the team and set a precedent for the entire program, but he didn't.

I used to like a lot of college football coaches, but the more I find about them, the more I dislike.

Case in point: I've always respected Kirk Ferentz.  Thought he was a respectable, nice guy.  Turns out he'll turn a blind eye to just about everything short of murder.

I know "Hart started it" with his little brother comment, but a Head Coach should be above that, his retort was classless and juvenile...

Aside from that there is the fact that he had like 15 players arrested this last offeseason and the only starter who wasn't immediately reinstated was incarcerated. He's dirty, and smells of scum... he could coach any other school and I would root against him, but because he coaches for Sparty I despise him more than any other coach.

The Rather Hall guys were not arrested. Also, Dantonio chose to suspend those players for the bowl game, which Jim Tressel chose not to do this year. Also, Mike Hart saying that was really ignorant. I'm sure when UM was down by 10 he was thinking "**** we're going to lose", not "MSU is our little brother, we're going to win this". Mike Hart's statement was unprovoked and even more classless

How about the gutless decision to let Rucker decide whether or not he would suspend himself after breaking his probation by getting a DUI? Or never suspending Winston for his thuggery on a State hockey player? (Jail time does not equal suspension.) And re: the Hart thing, a coach is a grown-ass man and should always be above that kind of thing when it involves a player from the other team. I don't care if Hart streaked through East Lansing with Suck It Little Brother inked on his ass. Dantonio's business is to stay above it. Face it: Dantonio is light on discipline. No amount of sourpuss refusals to smile at press conferences or fawning announcers makes up for the fact that he fails to maintain control of his team.

Jimbo Fisher. He is very well liked. Just snagged Nick O'Leary and seems to be luring kids back to FSU (based on 2011 recruits). I can see them becoming an ACC powerhouse very soon.

Funny as hell, doesn't work 20 hours a day, and when he went 11-2 or whatever his last season at Florida and the "fans" were upset, he said "I don't need this," and left. Florida fans were rewarded with Zook. Now Spurrier is set up to make a run at the SEC title in 2011...with South Carolina.
