OT: MGoBlue.com's Leaders and Best in 50 States

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on
I haven't seen this posted yet but I guess MGoBlue.com is compiling a list of the best UM athletes from each of the 50 states, along with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. They'll start announcing the names on June 28th. This seems like it will be pretty cool and help us cope with the off-season. http://www.mgoblue.com/genrel/50-states-preview.html Maybe we can all turn this into a game and guess who will win each state the day before they announce it. On June 27th, I'll start a thread about Delaware & New Jersey. Living in Kansas, I'm already going with Jerame Tuman to win this god-awful state...

Predictions:

  • Maryland: Michael Phelps
  • Florida: Anthony Carter
  • Indiana: Tom Harmon
  • Minnesota: Dick Kimball

Michigan and Ohio are going to be tough to select.

Gotta be Woodson.  Desmond in a close second.

I'm not sure if Phelps will be a contender.  Technically he never swam for UofM, right?

EDIT: This is BS.  If you go to Phelps' Wiki page and CTRL+F "Michigan" nothing comes up except for a hit in the related pages.  Someone needs to get on this pronto.

More predictions:

  • Nebraska - Gerald Ford (not sure how eligibility is going to work though)
  • New York - Mike Hart
  • California - Tom Brady (although maybe not if they only base it on performance as a Wolverine)

I assume they are going to make a major effort to include non-revenue sports.  It will be interesting to see what comes out of that.  Barry Larkin would be an obvious inclusion, except he's from Ohio--tough sledding that.  Other nominees that crossed my mind: Brian Griese (FL), Cazzie Russell (IL).

It's too bad that they aren't including foreign countries and Canadian provinces.  Then you could add Red Berenson (SK), Brendan Morrison (BC), Mike Cammalleri (ON), and Rumeal Robinson (Jamaica).

...try to include all sorts of athletes and they will try to get as many women into the mix as possible. Considering women's sports didn't start until 1973-4 (I believe), this will be difficult.  I'd caution everyone that before we get a rant on a given selection that we remember that I'm guessing that one of the purposes of the exercise from the AD's perspective is to shine a light on some lesser known talents from across the spectrum of Michigan sports history.  I'd hope that the reaction here to some OUTRAGEOUS selection is tempered by the realization that no one is really keeping score.

Moral of my premature e-outrage: Chill.  Be positive.

It's possible, but putting aside differences in program status isn't so easy.  Either way, Chad Henne was one of the best players at his position (the most important position on the field) in the country for the last couple years he was here.  Not in his division, in the whole country, any division.  For his efforts, he was drafted just outside of the 1st round the the pro draft.

I agree with you that Yealy had more team success than Henne had, so if that's what you mean by doing more for the program, then fine.  But the bottom line is that if M's lacrosse team was varsity, Yealy would be a pretty good lacrosse player.  At the highest level, Henne was still one of the best in the game.

list of the 50 best UM athletes from all 50 states, along with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.
So what states are being left out? Wyoming and North Dakota?
