OT: MGoBlue.com's Leaders and Best in 50 States
Predictions:
- Maryland: Michael Phelps
- Florida: Anthony Carter
- Indiana: Tom Harmon
- Minnesota: Dick Kimball
Michigan and Ohio are going to be tough to select.
Gotta be Woodson. Desmond in a close second.
I'm not sure if Phelps will be a contender. Technically he never swam for UofM, right?
EDIT: This is BS. If you go to Phelps' Wiki page and CTRL+F "Michigan" nothing comes up except for a hit in the related pages. Someone needs to get on this pronto.
...he only swam for Club Wolverine and was a volunteer coach for the swim team. Still...
I agree he should win it, no doubt. But if MGoBlue.com is going to neglect CWebb, then I'm guessing they'll do the same to Phelps.
Elise Ray (W Gymnastics)
If they don't allow Phelps for Maryland, Dhani Jones wouldn't be bad for the winner
More predictions:
- Nebraska - Gerald Ford (not sure how eligibility is going to work though)
- New York - Mike Hart
- California - Tom Brady (although maybe not if they only base it on performance as a Wolverine)
I assume they are going to make a major effort to include non-revenue sports. It will be interesting to see what comes out of that. Barry Larkin would be an obvious inclusion, except he's from Ohio--tough sledding that. Other nominees that crossed my mind: Brian Griese (FL), Cazzie Russell (IL).
It's too bad that they aren't including foreign countries and Canadian provinces. Then you could add Red Berenson (SK), Brendan Morrison (BC), Mike Cammalleri (ON), and Rumeal Robinson (Jamaica).
...try to include all sorts of athletes and they will try to get as many women into the mix as possible. Considering women's sports didn't start until 1973-4 (I believe), this will be difficult. I'd caution everyone that before we get a rant on a given selection that we remember that I'm guessing that one of the purposes of the exercise from the AD's perspective is to shine a light on some lesser known talents from across the spectrum of Michigan sports history. I'd hope that the reaction here to some OUTRAGEOUS selection is tempered by the realization that no one is really keeping score.
Moral of my premature e-outrage: Chill. Be positive.
biakabutuka could be montreal (QU) or zaire
Trevor Yealy.
Of course they won't include club athletes but he should be the winner.
Plus he's be going against Chad Henne and Steve Breaston.
Putting aside the differences in program status, Yealy has done much more for the lacrosse team than either of those two did for the football team.
It's possible, but putting aside differences in program status isn't so easy. Either way, Chad Henne was one of the best players at his position (the most important position on the field) in the country for the last couple years he was here. Not in his division, in the whole country, any division. For his efforts, he was drafted just outside of the 1st round the the pro draft.
I agree with you that Yealy had more team success than Henne had, so if that's what you mean by doing more for the program, then fine. But the bottom line is that if M's lacrosse team was varsity, Yealy would be a pretty good lacrosse player. At the highest level, Henne was still one of the best in the game.
list of the 50 best UM athletes from all 50 states, along with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.So what states are being left out? Wyoming and North Dakota?
Maybe they want to leave out Michigan and Ohio to skip making a bunch of tough choices (Woodson vs. Desmond for instance).
...every state plus DC and PR are accounted for. It's really the best 50 plus 2. If we were USC or BYU I guess we'd have to add American Samoa and if we were Wake Forest we'd have to add the USVI.
Being from Puerto Rico...I've never thought about great Wolverines from here. Any thoughts?
...you.
Did some intense research (aka Wiki) and came up with:
Fernando J. Canales, 1976 (Montreal), 1980 (Moscow) and 1984 (Los Angeles) Summer Olympics participant and member of the Puerto Rican Hall of Fame .
...with the excellent e-sleuthing. Canales was apparently born in Huntsville, AL but graduated from HS in PR. I'm betting on you and Fernando.
I'm looking forward to seeing who they pick from here.
Jason Ryznar? I don't know of any others. The total number of candidates has to be tiny.
New Mexico - Alan Branch. He graduated with my wife from Cibola High School.
...to the preview slideshow. Pretty cool stuff.
