OT: McGregor vs. Dos Anjos Canceled! EDIT

Submitted by Anonymous Coward (not verified) on

Apparently RDA broke his foot in training a day or two ago and has removed himself from UFC 196 and his highly anticipated bout with Conor Mcgregor.  This matchup will still happen sometime this year, but Dos Anjos will need an additoinal 6 weeks to recover.

McGregor was attempting to become the first fighter ever to hold two belts in more than one weight class at the same time.

A replacement opponent for McGregor has not ben announced, but there is a short list that includes Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone. A rematch with Aldo is very unlikely.

As a fan of the UFC and trash talking fighters I would love to see Conor fight Diaz. The buildup to the fight and the press conferences would be wildly entertaining.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Dana White recently announced that Mcgregor will move up to welterweight(170) to fight Nate Diaz! McGregor beat Jose Aldo at 145.

Yeah, it sucks. It is funny all of the guys who have called out Conor who refused to step up and fight him on this card. Aldo turned the fight down, Frank Edgar turned the fight down.

I know Anthony Pettis has offered to step in, but I don't know if he would have time to make weight on this short of notice. Im always down to watch a Cowboy Cerrone fight but not sure how physically ready he would be so soon after his last fight.

I just HOPE that it isn't Diaz. Sure I find Diaz entertaining but he has never been an elite fighter and is well passed his prime. Watching him trying to jab McGregor to death for multiple rounds would be a tremendously bad fight. Faber said he would fight as well and even that is a more interesting matchup than Nick Diaz at this point.

I saw that. I was going off from Ariel Helwani. I was hoping they would reward Cerrone for all the times he stepped up but Diaz and his mouth will help sell more ppv's. Should be a good fight with a ton of shit talking.

I mean it isn't really making him fight when he is under contract and signed on to be a part of UFC 196. Guys have to be replaced in fights all the time, its extremely rare for them to completely call off a bout and that comes from the organizations end.

Conor, no. A lot of other fighters, sure would. UFC is notoriously heavy handed and unfair to its fighters. I'm sure they would find a way to get a heap of money back from him or screw him over in some other facet.

Aren't a whole lot of options for fighters anymore. You can go overseas and fight or be on the undercard for Kimbo in Bellator.

I hope they release an X-Ray and some evidence. I honestly think that either Dos Anjos is ducking him (the longer he stays champ, the more he gets paid in endorsements), or has something to hide. Maybe I'm wrong though and this is was an honest injury, but I'm skeptical.

the people who have no clue about mma and just began watching as fans, mcgregor is just another Brock lesnar. in fact the aside from Aldo the only legit fighter he fought was Mendez and he got destroyed on the ground...when Mendez had less that 2 weeks notice. he beats diaz but has no chance vs rda...also keeps ducking franky...

While I agree that McGregor is overhyped, I don't think it's quite at that level. He has fantastic stand up and legit KO power. I do think RDA and Edgar will beat him, but RDA is a tougher fight than Edgar so I'm not sure how him moving up in weight qualifies as ducking Edgar.

Dude, Dustin Poirier is definitely legit and Connor clowned him. So funny, you're insulting people claiming you know so much about mma, and you can't even spell Frankie's name right, who Dana himself said turned the fight down... But he's "ducking" him!? This isn't boxing. You can't duck fights in the UFC.

I'm a little partial when it comes to Diaz, but that may not be a fight Connor wants on short notice. Nate can neutralize his reach and is just as accurate with his punches. Nate can't compete with the muscular wrestler types, but he's not someone you want to stand and box with and he's dangerous on the mat. And I can promise you he's not intimidated by him. I may be talking him up, but I don't think Connor is just going to run thru Diaz and work him over in a couple minutes.

Also, Connor accepting these fight on short notice and not backing down is impressive. Taking on Mendes(or as you spell it, Mendez) and Nate on short notice is dangerous. He could back out and throw the whole card out like Bones did if he wanted to.

Gain some insight and learn to spell before criticizing others

Nothing against Diaz, but he's not a great matchup for McGreggor IMO.  He is great with submissions, but he won't take the fight to the ground because he loves to box.  And, he will lose his reach advantage because he only uses his hands and McGreggor will kick too.

I know this fight is on short notice so the last thing you want to do as an established 155er is take a fight with McGreggor on a short prep and lose or not make weight, but c'mon.  Where are Petis & Khabib?  Khabib would not be an entertaining fight for fans of striking, but he'd take him down, control the entire fight, and get an easy win IMO.  Pettis is a much more versatile striker and still has that same reach advantage that Diaz has, but will kick and be very dynamic with his strikes.  He's a very similar fighter to McGreggor, but larger.  Both Khabib & Pettis are ranked higher than Diaz at 155.  At least Diaz always has good aerobic conditioning so he won't gas on short notice.  I'd still like to see a Mendes rematch on a full prep or an Edgar fight.  Edgar is very durable and moves a lot and won't stand in front of him.  A real fun fight at 155 would be Barbosa.  I'd love to see how McGreggor would deal with Barbosa's kicks.  Tony Ferguson would be a good fight too.  But, Pettis is the fight I'd like to see.  Oh well.  Hopefully eventually Conner gets humbled like Rousey.

Mcgregor took Diaz because he wanted nothing to do with Pettis or Cowboy!

Both have long reaches and very athletic guys. And can knock you out.

Mcgregor is not afraid of getting knocked out by Diaz but should be worried about his ground game.

Mcgregor is going to knock out Diaz.

I'd be surprised if Conor KOs Diaz, at least with his hands, although I wouldn't be surprised if he won.  I think Connor has to be unpredictable and use his kicks a lot to win.  Diaz prefers to fight at boxing distance and will have the reach advantage, but that gets muddled because he doesn't kick much and Conor does.  If the fight goes to the ground Diaz has the advantage, but I'd be surprised if either fighter choses to take it there by design.

The only guy to KO Diaz in his career is Josh Thomson by a high kick.  He landed a number of high leg kicks on Diaz in that fight and also swithced stances a lot, which Conor does as well.  Diaz is somewhat succeptible to that and Conor is a good kicker, so it's possible but he'd have to use his feet to do it IMO.  But I'd be surprised if he KOs him with his hands.  Thomson is a good kicker, but is quite a bit bigger than Conor.  Diaz has fought other more powerful punchers than Conor like Johnson, Maynard, Cerrone, McDonald, Davis, & Guillard and none of them KO'd him.

Good points ! I just think Connor is a better striker than most of those guys. Diaz is a great boxer. Nobody said he would KO Aldo either which you could say was a bit of luck.

To be honest I hope Conor is
submitted so he can be brought back down to earth a bit.

I enjoy the ranting a bit but think he has gone to far a bit lately.

I would of loved to see Pettis and Conor match up
