OT - LSU Brawl victim allegedely threw first punch
Just read that the victim who was sent to the hospital allegedely threw the first punch, after being kicked out of the bar. This according to a bouncer and the bar manager.
Just want to add that as a bar manager myself, I would probably cover for a football player as long no one died.

some guy tried to pick a fight with Jake Long at the Jug. I remember thinking: who the hell would be dumb enough to try and pick a fight with Jake Long?
All my internal organs are just fine where they are thanks.

Saw Jake Long in person one time at Meijer, and man is that guy enormous.
You can look at heights and weights on a roster but until you see it in person you have no idea.
Was that guy at the Jug a WWE wrestler? Alcohol makes people do some dumb shiz.

Saw him on the diag during my time at UM. He is a mountain of a man. I remember looking up and thinking I was in the presence of Andre the Giant, but bigger. (Shoutout to Fred Jackson.)

This whole LSU situation is turning into a he said-she said type deal, which is what happens in most situations like this.
On LSU blogs there is endless bickering about who started the fight, how serious the injuries were, blah blah blah.
All the legal stuff will sort itself out eventually, but if LSU has any dignity at all, these players will not be playing for AT LEAST a couple games. And that is what LSU fans seem to be ignoring.
I mean, these guys snuck out after curfew check-in a two weeks before the season starts, went to a bar, and got in a fight. Not only that, but they are a top 5 team. How dumb can you be? Especially as someone competing for a starting job like Jefferson is.
I'm sorry, but I don't buy the "they're only 18-22 year olds" argument. I made mistakes at their age too, but you simply have to have more common sense than that.

But eyewitnesses are incredibly unreliable. Especially when dealing with high-profile athletes who play for a very big SEC school nearby.

kicking someone in the head while thier down is the problem I have. I dont care if they threw the first 20 punches thats wrong and in my opinion cowardly. I knew someone that kicked someone when they were down and they spent the weekend in jail. And this kid wasnt even hurt its, just the fact he kicked him in the head while down.

tell me Hoke wouldnt have already kicked this kid of the team or redshirted his ass.

I think you're overracting a bit.
The guys got into a fight. If there weren't any guns/kjnives/weapons and they were in a situation where they got in a fight because a guy punched one of them, i really don't see that as a big deal.
You say you don't buy the 18-22 year old excuse and I to that I have to say, you must be a long way from that age if you can't remember what it was like. I can remember that age well and can tell you if I was at a bar and me or one of my friends got punched I would have been fighting back.
Look, I know there are some nerds out there that have never broken the law, never drank under age, never snuck out after bedcheck, but the vast majority of people have, especially kids this age.
To me, if this story ends up being true (not saying it is, but if they got punched first) I don't see the need for a guy to get suspended for it. Disciplined, yes, but not suspended. Give the guys some stadium steps at 5 am and some internal stuff like that, but a suspension for a fight an sneaking out....that just seems a little harsh to me.

I think it has to do with the idea that you don't get to kick people in the head. If it was a one-on-one fight where Jordan Jefferson hit a guy who hit him first, that's different. What Jefferson is ALLEGED to have done is very different, both legally and morally.
August 26th, 2011 at 9:00 AM ^
because I can't read the link. What is he supposed to have done? Did he kick him in the head while he was on the ground? If so, I can see why he would be suspended, but if the others were not involved in the "kicking in the head" I still don't see a big issue.

The details are hazy, but apparently witnesses said that Jefferson and a few other players hauled a guy out of his truck and started beating his ass, and at some point Jefferson kicked him (or someone else) in the head.

I just saw on ESPN that Russell Shepard has been ruled ineligible and will not play in the Oregon game. He was expected to start at WR this season for LSU. Something to do with NCAA interviews about the Willie Lyles deal.

A lot of other coaches would have suspended these guys by now at least for one game for breaking curfew (team rules violations). As Dave Brandon said in the coaching search, all that glitters is not gold.

Well, one of the victims. The other guy, the guy who LSU players pulled from his car, probably not so much. Wonder if the police have been able to get in contact with him.

in the USA (which it well may be) the first punch does matter. Primarily, if no punch is thrown after the first punch, the guy who threw the punch is guilty of assault. Second, even if the guy relatiates it could be considered self defense providing he doesn't go overboard (which they seem to have here).
Also, in Canada there is no law against fighting. In other words, two consenting adults can fight if the choose and it isn't against the law. If that is the same in the USA, I would say the guy who threw the first punch was in essence consenting to the fight.
August 26th, 2011 at 10:54 AM ^
Not sure if two consenting adults can legally fight in the U.S., but I imagine that in Canada, after a consenting fight that the two gentelmen get up, shake hands, and go to Tim Horton's to get a coffee and split a donut. Canadians just seem nicer.

This reminds me of the MSU situation where the girl was raped by the two basketball players. Despite the testimony of the girl and the rapist, the players' suite-mate maintained that it was consensual and could hear the girl enjoying herself from the room next door.
The point is that witnesses will remember what they want, especially if they are fans of the accused.

Oh well then that completely justifies the mass beating he took from those four men. I hope top see all those players suit up for next weekend.

Losers have been trying to prove their masculinity by picking fights with football players for as long as I can remember and probably at least a hundred years. When you add in the opportunity for profitable litigation in today's "civil justice system," it has almost become a growth industry.
