OT: Lions looking at Cromartie?
Per NFL.com, the Chargers and Lions are in talks to send Antonio Cromartie to the Lions. I live in Southern California, and my wife and her family are die-hard Charger fans. As such, I feel like I've got a valid opinion on Cromartie. Details aren't discussed, and no trades can become official until March 5th.
Let me say this, the Lions would be better served trading up to the number 1 pick to draft Dez Bryant than trading for Cromartie. He is always going for the big play, and frequently looks really out of position. Opposing teams know this and pick on him with double moves and fakes every game--all game. He isn't really a viable NFL player at this point, and needs to learn how to play inside of a system to become one.

The dude had 10 picks in one season. He might be worth taking a flyer on if the asking price isn't too steep.

He's saying drafting Bryant at #1 would be a horrible idea, but trading for Cromartie would be worse.

I wouldn't, the point was that the Lions have picked a lot of receivers very highly in the last decade, with decidedly mixed results.

cromartie is sure as hell better than any of the other crap at corner right now...bring him in for a 5th rounder and try to make a play for sheppard and we could have a legit secondary by next year

At this point, after watching the Lions' corners being repeatedly beat, I'd say yes to almost anybody. Emphasize the ALMOST. The guy isn't getting younger, clearly has maturity issues, and has really struggled the past couple of years, allegedly because of the kid situation. If he was a free agent and the Lions didn't have to give up anything cept cap space for him it might sound semi-tempting. But to have to give up players or draft picks for him is mind-boggling. I think the Lions would be better suited seeking free agents like Dunta Robinson or *GASP* Marlin Jackson.

Not necessarily, money speaks volumes. Certainly the thought of coming to Detroit isn't as appetizing as New Orleans, but everyone has their price. Additionally, Detroit's cornerback situation is such that there's ample opportunity for a starting role.

Everything I've read says it might be a fifth round pick for him. If that's all, then I'd do it for sure.

If that is true, then I'm fine with this trade. Cromartie is a boom-or-bust CB, but at this point the Lions cannot be beggars. If they can nab him for a 4th+ rounder, then that is a good trade.

Cromarite reminds me of a tall Dre Bly and I would be thrilled to have him on the Lions.

I love the phrase "alarming lack of tackling effort." That describes his style nicely--it's hilarious watching a CB run away from a running back, especially as my wife is swearing at him.

could pick him up for a late round pick they guy is a young first round talent and would be a big help in a division with QBs like Favre, Rodgers and Cutler.

I think it would be a good move for a 5th or later pick. Getting a young player who has potential, and experiance, is in a contract year so he knows he has to do things the right way or hes going to get the min to play anywhere next year. The Lions top 3 CB's are 29,30,and 33 years old, Cromarite is 25.
This isnt a long term commitment. If it works great. maybe we could give him an extension or resign him. If it doesnt, thats fine we dont resign him, so he can join Mike Williams on the celebrity version of the biggest loser.

if we're waiting for a 25-year old playmaking corner without any flaws to come available for a 5th-round pick, we're gonna be waiting for a long time. when you've won four of your last 40 games, it's probably okay to take a couple of risks. i'm not too worried about upsetting the chemistry.

but I would be hesitant trading for Cromartie after his past two seasons. But if the Lions can pick him up for cheap say a 2nd day draft pick then that might not be so bad.
Considering a 2nd day draft pick would be either a 2nd or 3rd rounder as the 1st day of the draft is now only the 1st round, I wouldn't call that too cheap.

The guy has loads of talent he just doesn't ever seem to be mentally in the game.
Sadly, he is better than what we have at corner right now and if all it takes is a 5th rounder than it's a no brainer.
I remember from the OTL episode about Florida State's lack of academic standards that they mentioned how Antonio Cromartie left FSU after three years more or less illiterate.
