OT: Late Night Horror

Submitted by Big Boutros on

I just finished watching a Dutch thriller from 1988 entitled Spoorloos, or The Vanishing as it's known here in the States.

It's an exceptional film, and I highly recommend it for anyone desiring something in the horror category that doesn't confine itself to genre stereotypes.

Next on my list is Roman Polanski's The Tenant.

Share with us some underrated horror titles that you've come across!

The Wicker Man from 1973.  The remake is a work of comedic genius, but the original is an absolute masterpiece.  If you can find a copy to rent, do it.

The original is excellent.  I actually just watched the remake from 1991 a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised.  It stays fairly faithful to the original, the main change is updating the lady character to make her respectable instead of a total ditz.  And the ending is different.

There were some flaws of course but overall I'd say it's a far better remake than the remakes of Dawn of the Dead or Day of the Dead.

Indy horror film that starts out kinda slow, but is totally worth watching.  Can't say anymore lest I give something away.  "Session 9" is another really good low-budget horror flick.

Avoid the movie "Old Boy" like it is the plague dipped in herpes and glass shards.

Clarification:

Avoid the movie "Old Boy" like it is the plague dipped in herpes and glass shards.

Avoid it because why? I loved that whole Park Chan-wook vengeance trilogy, including Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I thought Oldboy was the best of the three, FWIW.

I agree with you that Oldboy was pretty amazing. I can also understand people not liking it.  It was super intense.  It had a lot of graphic content and plot points that might make someone sick.

I will always remember the scene in the sushi bar though.  That was insane!

Actually, I am going to watch Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.  Only 3 short years after seeing Oldboy.  It will probably take me another 3 years to recover enough to finish the trilogy.

That's the same exact way I described it to my fiance yesterday when she was bitching about it being on. I said "come on, you don't think any of this is compelling?"  Good call, great show...As far as alien/UFO movies go, nothing beats "Fire in the Sky." That movie will scar you for life.

I have to say the new Halloween II by Rob Zombie was very scary in theatre. Lots of moments to make you jump.

Direct quote from me to my girlfriend in the theatre watching this movie: "I can't handle this!" Rob Zombie did an awesome job on it.

Ugh, one of the many bad girly movies I was dragged to in New Jersey. We had cable vision and one of their promotions was free movies for all cable vision subscribers at clearview cinemas on Tuesdays. So if there wasn't anything decent we both wanted to see, she would convince me to come with her to movies such as Bride Wars, Confessions of a Shopaholic, some movie about a girl with a pig face, and Enchanted (which I actually enjoyed and Amy Adams is hot).

Probably not underrated but to me the gold standard scare flick has always been Poltergeist.  I guess it depends on what pushes your particular buttons.  In that vein I would add Amityville Horror.

The Descent is one of my all time favorites. They recently made a straight to dvd sequel, I read about it some, and it doesn't even make sense given the ending of the first movie.

I'm glad you correctly labeled this OT. At first glance I thought this was an announcement that we were going to be playing a rematch vs. ASU in a night game in 2012.

I think I've been spending too much time on this site.

I don't think I've ever seen a Stephen King movie that I didn't like. "Pet Sematary" is one of my favorites.  More recently, "The Mist" is a great one. Oh yeah, "The Shining" is pretty good too.

Didn't that get remade into a horrible piece of crap with Keifer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock?

Loved the original, despised the remake with the fury of 1,000 suns if that's the one I'm thinking of. Someone mentioned "Audition" above...extremely skin-crawly creepy movie. If you like Japanese horror films (and what's WRONG with you?? if you don't), the orignal Ju-On and Dark Water are both good.
