OT (kinda): Oregon/Michigan workplace banter

Submitted by Peterman on March 22nd, 2017 at 3:32 PM

I work in Nike's HQ in Beaverton, Oregon. Wearing Michigan gear at work this week feels... different than other weeks. Wanted to share the friendly workplace back-and-forth with the gang here as you may find it amusing:

What my co-worker posted (linked if picture doesn't work):

What I posted in response (linked, again):

His first note: "FLUSH TWICE. It's a long way to Ann Arbor, MI. Go Ducks!"

My response: "Congratulations on your team's victories against mid-majors Iona and Rhode Island! Michigan basketball is 4-0 all time vs. Oregon basketball. If you are still interested in viewing the game despite it being unrelated to football season, it begins at 4:09 PM on Thursday. Go Blue! PS - I will only flush a second time if the duck doesn't make it on the first flush."

Other than a few people picking Oregon out of some feeble spite - nearly all of them disenchanted Spartan fans - the only real chatter we've had here is about whether or not this is going to look like the Oklahoma State game or the Louisville game or is Oregon different enough that they are a challenge unto themselves, as really all teams are, but we were struggling for a comparison.

"I work in Nike's HQ in Beaverton, Oregon"

I'm sorry.

I used to drive past that soulless sucking tax hole regularly.

...and while it's surrounded by Beaverton, last I knew it wasn't IN Beaverton - for tax avoidance reasons.

This particular coworker repeatedly told me he only cares about football earlier this season. I gotta give him credit for making an attempt to talk trash when the opportunity presented itself. He also said something about the game being on Friday, hence the gametime reminder in the message as well.

Living in Portland, I always get a lot of shit about wearing my Michigan gear. (which, why really? Why do they care?) But this week, everyone has been pretty quiet. Seems like they feel fortunate to have gotten this far and are worried.

OP by any chance do you have any "pull" in hiring? I applied for a position there, but didn't have quite the experience they were looking for. still would love to work there, and I am in Oregon already.

I live in Portland too. Going to watch with most of my coworkers. Can confirm that most Duck fans are fickle and only follow basketball when they get into the top 20.

Lake Oswego is ritzy suburb of Portland.  I was there for work, but I couldn't help but give a "Go Blue," to the guy wearing the Oregon hat and sweartshirt drinking at the bar.  He turned his dead, but didn't say anything and just shook his head.  The Ducks are not a confident group right now.  My client was completely confused, but I couldn't help myself.
