[LOCKED] OT: Kaepernick/Reid settle with NFL

Submitted by donjohn64 on February 15th, 2019 at 4:17 PM

I'm guessing this is what the two 'Football' posts earlier today were intended to discuss....

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26004715/colin-kaepernick-eric-reid-settle-grievance-case-nfl

Sorry it's WWL link. TL;DR version - Kaepernick and Reid settled with the NFL, neither is allowed to discuss the matter any further, so we don't know and probably won't find out what kind of settlement (MGoLawyers?).

Also, I'm guessing that this is going to get locked due to unreasonable discourse. C'est la vie.

[edit: mgowill] Well this turned out pretty terrible. I've noted some of the worst posts and will be banning accounts. Let's try not to do this again folks.

Crapernick could play in the new aaf, but he demanded a shit ton of money. Dude is a washed up con artist. He was protesting something that there is already  a federal agency created to investigate what he was complaining about.. so yeah his protesting made no sense. His right though... just didn’t make sense.

You actually helped my point. His protest should have been against said federal agency for not doing their job then. Leave the fiag out of it. Once again I dont care that he did it, it was just pointless and made zero sense.

Lol the amount of publicity he would bring to the AAF would be worth the price tag  in Kaepernicks view obviously.

Hes is not that wrong. Think about all the haters who want him injured and pro Kaep people who want him to succeed tune into the AAF to watch.

Probably financially lucrative honestly.

I heard on the radio today that a couple of attorneys who knew about the negotiations said that he was going to get $60M-$80M as a settlement from the league.  That explains why he told the new league he wanted $20M.  It was probably the negotiated rate for his deal with the NFL, he was about to get that big payday and didn't want to muddy the water with a new deal at a new league for a fraction of that.

Nothing to corroborate, just hearsay on the radio...

I know googling is difficult for you old people, but man this is like shooting fish in a barrel.

That captures it pretty well. And as I understand it, the players all used to kneel.

But the evidence is also in that it worked--though quiet and respectful, it had symbolic power. The NFL put forth money for a lot of good programs, people talked, and people who were, in fact, racists, outed themselves over the issue. All in all a good day.

That you choose to make it about disrespecting the anthem/flag and not about bringing attention to raciall injustice is actually on people like you, not on Kapernick.  If he burned the flag, pissed on it or did any number of other things, he’d be clearly direspecting the flag.    He didn’t.   He merely took a knee.

You have it backwards actually. If there is a McCarthyism around so called respect for the flag when the flag is supposed to represent a country, constitution and government that claims that freedom of speech is the most important right, and that the right to protest, air and redress grievances is actually a duty, then the flag doesn't mean shit. If you can't burn the flag, protected and necessary speech, then the flag doesn't stand for what you think it does nor what it's supposed to or needs to.

When the country, the laws, the lawmakers, and the law enforcers refuse to live up to the ideals, the promises and the edicts of the constitution, the preamble, the declaration, our treaties, our civil rights and human rights laws, international laws or the laws of the religion and leader that most American's claim as theirs and whose tenets and ideas have infiltrated our laws, government, media, sports and everything else, when justice won't be done, when the truths and reality won't be told, admitted or acknowledged, when the forced and imposed inequality, brutality, injustice, insult and hypocrisy is so great, so persistent, insistent, pervasive, unacceptable & intolerable, then kneeling for the anthem, and, or, not saluting or standing for the flag are THE MILDEST FORM OF PROTEST & REACTION POSSIBLE & not a FRACTION of what is deserved or should be expected, and sure as fuck isn't a fraction of what white America would do or try to do if it was happening to them or to the whole country!!!

No country on earth makes more war and wars than the US and there has NEVER been a war we've fought outside the civil war itself, including the revolutionary war, in which we've had a fraction of the legitimate reasons and just cause to go to war against another country as blacks have to protest injustice in this country.

If another country imposed the conditions and treatment of blacks in America on all whites in America, it wouldn't take more than a single day before we went to war against them! Yet white America, it's media, government and it's antitrust exempt, and therefore truly NATIONAL football league, are ANGRY & HATEFUL that after FOUR HUNDRED YEARS & counting of what "we" wouldn't stand for for a DAY, black people have the NERVE to show the mildest, meekest, and totally silent displeasure, protest or resistance to! Angry they're so UNGRATEFUL!!!

The very people that are angry and outraged that blacks aren't grateful enough for the centuries of kindness, caring, love and respect we've shown them, whom are angry about alleged disrespect for flag, anthem, police, and country, don't respect any other flags in the world save for possibly England & Israel, and hate many countries that have been nothing but our unprovoked victims, would want to kill you if you expected or demanded that THEY respect, salute or stand for the flag/anthem of a country that had done and still did to them what we have and still do to blacks!

Do you people LITERALLY, REALLY, AND TRULY not know this shit???

What respect, forgiveness or acceptance do you fuckfaces have for OJ and his two individual alleged murders? Yet you don't even acknowledge that our existence and wealth is based on the largest, longest and worst cases of land theft, genocide and race based chattel slavery in history and that we still victimize and blame our historical victims to this very second!

If a suspected two piddly little murders is enough to permanently vilify a previously beloved figure for 90% of white 'murica then why isn't persistent, insistent, continuous, planned with malice and forethought, carried out by one administration after another,  genocide, slavery, land theft, white supremacy, racism, discrimination, segregation, Jim Crow, etc. etc. etc., worthy of, at infinitely below the minimum, and at the very and absolute LEAST, a little disrespect, a little protest, a silent kneel???

This is just a SEVERELY sick and twisted place, there's no way around it!

There isn’t a single ridiculous or untrue thing I wrote, you are as full of shit as it’s possible to be. Name and prove a single fucking thing I said that was wrong, you can’t!

Howard Zinn is but one of a million things you and everyone else needs to listen to. I mean the only possible way not to is if you actually believe, literally, in some twisted “Devine” rights and white supremacy. What in the fuck is wrong with you?

Do you have an ounce of knowledge? Even a notion of what logic is? A single shred of honesty or integrity?

Do you think it takes Zinn to know and understand everything I said? Knowledge, analysis, understanding and opinion I’ve had virtually my entire life, decades before I knew who the fuck he was? Is he the only source you know that could lead one to what I wrote?

Who in the fuck have you read or heard or seen or observed that gives you whatever sick but unstated views you have, unstated other than one person I shouldn’t listen to? Trump? Rand?Henry Ford? Hitler? Rush? What on earth is it about your sources that lends them credence and veracity?

Every single bit of history and known fact is on my side.

YOU are pointless and make zero sense, MK.  Do you have any clue whatsoever what Kaep and Reid and numerous others were/are protesting? (A clue: it isn't the American Flag).

I've read through this entire thread, and although most contributors have made good-to-great points adding to the discussion, a handful of others have exposed themselves as ignorant or racist or both.

In the case of a couple of them, I found myself a little surprised and hope it's only because they're misinformed or just haven't paid proper attention to the real issues being protested. As for the others who are throwing nothing but garbage into the discussion, I've been around long enough on this board to not be surprised at the idiocy they're spewing, as they had long ago painted themselves as bigoted idiots.

What's your excuse?

Neither Kaepernick nor Mark Sanchez had played since 2016, but when Washington needed a QB in a hurry after Alex Smith went down and career backup Colt McCoy didn't work out they went with Sanchez.

Even though Sanchez was older, not as good an athlete and frankly had played much worse in 2016 than Kaepernick had. Kaepernick had played for a horrible, mismanaged 2-14 49ers team in 2016 but had still managed a 59.2% completion percentage and 16 touchdowns against 4 interceptions in 11 starts while Sanchez had no touchdowns and 2 interceptions as a backup on a 13-3 Dallas team.

To no one's surprise, Sanchez turned out to be awful and was benched partway through his only start. He never managed to throw a touchdown but did throw three interceptions.

Are you telling me that Kaepernick would have done worse than Mark Sanchez?

This is also a league where Nathan Peterman started not one but two games. Two. He might not even have been the worst quarterback to start for Buffalo, since he did manage a touchdown pass and Derek Anderson didn't.

At this point my guess is Kaepernick probably wouldn't make sense for any team in the NFL for off-the-field reasons (he's simply too high-profile and off-putting to a vocal subset of the NFL fanbase for the risk-adverse nature of NFL owners), but I have decent confidence that he'd still be a viable QB in the league.  He wouldn't be a "star", but as you noted his stats for that year weren't all that bad and he graded out as an "average" NFL starter.  And your "average" NFL starter makes around $20M a year, which is why everyone freaking out about his "outrageous" salary demands strike me as crazy.  The problem is he's probably not starter-quality anymore (or at least in terms of a starter who isn't a placeholder), and he's too famous/divisive to be a backup.  So he'll never play QB again, and that is probably a bit sad for him but also makes sense, and he seems to have a plan outside of football to do some good.  I'm glad the NFL had to settle with him.

They would have been terrible with either one.  The fact of the matter is Kap isn't a good enough player to deal with all the B.S. publicity that would come with him.  That's why no one has picked him up yet.  Is he better than some guys being signed?  Sure.  But he isn't that much better to deal with the headache.  Even if your as an owner supported what he did.  Not worth the headache.
