OT: Jim Leavitt to Oregon as DC

Submitted by tjl7386 on
Couldn't recall if Brady Hoke had been let go just yet but this seals the deal. Sad because he is a good guy but I'm not sure he belongs at a major school.

Leavitt got screwed at USF.  Judy Genshaft decided he wasn't the coach who was going to make them equal to UF and FSU, so she decided to fire him on a trumped up charge when an off-duty Florida State Trooper who witnessed the incident contradicted everything she decided to view as "fact" about the incident.

So how has that worked out for USF?    They are now a stepping stone program for coaches who want good jobs.  It's hilarious that ex-USF coach Taggart is hiring him.

Make that up. It's a fact that Judy and Leavitt doesn't get along and that some aspects of the locker room case were blown out of proportion due to conflicting reports and such. And the fact that Leavitt won his lawsuit just adds to the mystique of what actually happened at USF

Leavitt built that program from scratch beginning in I-AA....their first coaching offices were portable unit trailers..... then he ends up getting accused of choking a player IIRC. Heck, he even had USF in the top 5 at some point.

this move by Leavitt unless Oregon is just throwing stupid money at him. Right this moment CU has a better team and is building themselves back into a college power. Oregon is a mess right now. Leavitt did a great job at CU building a top tier defense.  He will make a difference at Oregon though.

How is this a lateral move?  I mean, I know Oregon was bad this year and Colorado was good, but Oregon was in the national championship game twice in the last decade, and has facilities and resources that far outstrip Colorado.  Meanwhile, Colorado's last conference title was in 2001 (in the Big 12).  It's not a lateral move.  Oregon is a good job as long as Phil Knight is pumping money into it.

Eh, it's still kind of a lateral move. They're both P5 teams, same conference even. I don't see CU falling back to the cellar nor Oregon regaining their former height in the near future. It's not like Oregon is some blue blood program with a lot of historical success either, they rode Chip Kelly's hot offense to national fame, but that shine has worn off. They do have the daddy Nike relationship which helps I guess.

I'm kinda surprised Leavitt hasn't gotten another shot at a head coaching gig.  Obviosuly there was the terrible USF incident, but the dude can clearly coach, and I haven't heard other allegations of player mistreatment.  I would think some school would be willing to give him a second chance.

I don't think Don Brown could have fixed that horrible defense in one year let alone Hoke. I would fault Hoke for not assessing how God awful that situation was he signed on to.

Yeah, CU fans in Boulder are sort of pissed -- lateral move -- and justifiably worried.  The team will be very young next year and as posted above, loses a few players to the NFL so this is bad for them..

But not surprising.

S. Florida connection, interesting. I wonder if they'll bring Skip Holtz along to be the offensive coordinator. (kidding, he's the HC at La Tech).

I think he's going to have to go do FS1 for a year and pray he can land a MAC head coaching job.

IMO, it's exactly where he should be. And yes, that's kind of a knock on Hoke...but what I really mean is all he has to worry about is football. A small town. Some with a small solid fanbase. Keep it simple/basic and just focus on football the way Bo did 40 years ago (since that's his model).

I'd love to see him back at Ball St., Toledo, or one of the directionals. Close by where he can still have a relationship with Michigan via camps and things like that. We can tip him off to those 2-3* kids that would be huge for his program.

IMO, that's the best case scenario.

If not that, a DL coach for the same reasons.
