Jered Weaver is my new second favorite baseball player.  I'm not suggesting he is making a sacrifice "only" making 17 million a year but I like this quote:

"If $85 (million) is not enough to take care of my family and other generations of families then I'm pretty stupid, but how much money do you really need in life?" Weaver said Tuesday. "I've never played this game for the money. I played it for the love and the competitive part of it. It just so happens that baseball's going to be taking care of me for the rest of my life."

As a fan, I think all pro athletes should have this attitude.  It's especially refreshing in the wake of all the "I'm gonna get mine" attitude coming from the NCAA right now.  I know it's easier to think Weaver's way when you have millions in the bank but try to look at the glass half full.  I hope more players think this way and just don't speak up.

Plus he cost Scott Boras a ton of cash, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

After misreading the title of the OP, I totally thought this was going to be about something else. I'm not sure which would have been more entertaining, actually.

I applaud Weaver for doing this.

However I don't mind players asking for what their market value is when their contract comes up. What I don't mind is players that will sign a contract and then shortly into it they want to renegotiate for more money (even sometimes up to one year) and they hold out if they don't get their way.

^ What this guy said, if your A-Rod, Payton, Brady etc you get what the market gives you which is always top-top dollar.  Weaver realized "hey i'm pretty good and this is a pretty good paycheck so lets do this" instead of the usual "I want to be the highest paid player even though I'm not nearly worth that rant that 90% of the holdouts are (see: Chris Johnson).

While what Weaver did I will not defend (throwing near his head), it is more out of character than you want to believe. Being a lifelong angel fan (yeah, yeah, bias etc...) and following Weavers career since before he was even drafted out of long beach state, I honestly cant remember more than maybe one or two other situations where Weaver lost control, as he definitely did against the Tigers. 95% of the time, he is completely laid back, and has the west coast relaxed attitude. The game was definitely the most important of his season, an intense pitchers duel where he was clearly frustrated with his offense just sucking, and snapped at magglio when he made a mistake on a pitch.

If you think guillen wasnt showboating, then you cannot seperate your love of the tigers from clear rational thought. If someone had hit a HR against the tigers in a heated game and did that, you would have been pissed as well (I bet similarly most of you are proud when Verlander threatened aybar after the bunt). While I cannot defend the pitch being thrown near his head, I can defend the message of Weaver saying that he will not be disrespected. If Verlander had thrown the pitch, you would probably be arguing in the same position I am in, disgusted that the pitch wound up so close to the batters head, but at the same time proud of your pitcher standing up for your team (the intention, not the location of the pitch).
