OT- Iowa fans boo Stanford Band's show mocking Iowa

Submitted by MonkeyMan on

Iowa fans booed a classless Stanford halftime show mocking Iowa fans with a cow. Apparently Stanford's band has gotten in trouble before for this. Given hat the band director must had been in on this, its an incredible official slap in the face against an opponent team.

Wonder how Stanford fans would react to an Iowa halftime show with a Google bus being driven through a ton of homeless people peeing on the streets of San Francisco.

major lack of class at Stanford

I was stunned the Ric Flair post wasnt morphed into a posbang.  I mean it's been hours since we've had one and the only one on the side board right now is the no football negbang where the OP was shamed into flipping it.

I think we should seriously consider going "all-posbang" and have the mods delete any thread that doesnt have posbang in the title.

This whole PC attitude is getting out of hand.  These are college-aged kids fergodsakes. They are SUPPOSED to do "dumb" things.

Now I will agree that this would be out of bounds in a professional work-type environment. However, just because a few people think its "offensive", why is it "bad"?

The PC Police need to go and people need to lighten up just a tad.

The kids will be kids argument is rediculous when offensive acts, no matter how small the minority is targeted, is performed by a representative of a University (which most would agree the marching band is).

What is the world does "PC" have to do with this? It's like some ridiculous battle cry to bitch about "PC" nowadays. There were no "PC Police" anywhere. Fans booed an opposing team's band. It happens every week. Move on. This is like the Starbucks issue. There weren't really people mad about the starbucks cup, but some people saw a chance to bitch about "PC POLICE AMERICA IS GOING DOWN THE SHITTER" and rile up other like-minded people. The OUTRAGE over non-existent things is irony at its best. Quit searching so hard for things to be OUTRAGED about, I say.

In my profession I work with a lot of Stanford grads. I can say they are my least favorite of the top schools both in cs and mba. For all the shit Harvard grads get for their arrogance it pails in comparison to Stanford grads sense of entitlement. Of course there are exceptions and I don't mean to offend any Stanford grads on this board, just talking from my own experience in the tech field managing a lot of recent grads.

My Facebook feed has been filled with MMB alum hot takes about how bad this was.

I don't get it. The Stanford Band is great. They don't take themselves seriously. If more college bands did that instead of turning every performance into a pseudo-DCI orchestral statement...

Stanford's band is a less-formal "scramble" band.  It is like Virginia's before they went formal.

My wife went to UVa and was in the scramble band.  She says they took pride in their anti-formality attitude.  They played well enough, but the idea of precise uniforms and precise formations was something against the grain of their philosophy.  All that ended when Virginia received funding to form a "proper" marching band.

Stanford's band is like what my wife described -- rebellious, and proud of it.  And the TV announcers commented how the Stanford band "lives for" being booed like that.

If I were the Iowa fans I'd worry more about the state of their football team than I would about what the other team's band is doing.

it comes to Stanford's band.  I've always thought they are an embarassment to their University with some of their classless shows.  I have no problem with any band being innovative and creative.  College marching bands tend to be very traditional across the board and Stanford's is trying to be different.  I get that.  But, it's just the negative way they often come across that I would find very annoying as a Stanford grad or supporter.

Your analogy completely misses, and there's not really anything in that video clip that's offensive.   If Iowa had been competitive in the game, this wouldn't be an issue.

Faux outrage over nothing from butthurt football fans.   ::yawn::

I thought it was great.

So what? They're college kids at the last football game of the season, which, to be honest, doesn't really count for much anyway. It's not like they sounded terrible or anything, they all know how to play their instruments. Why not have fun with it?

I do think the Stanford band has at times crossed the line. The Notre Dame half-time show comes to mind (Number 7 here). However, I didn't find it a big deal. If Iowa wasn't getting curb-stomped I don't think there would have been as many boos.

I did wonder; if UM was playing them, what would their focus be? Safety-school stuff? Webber and time-outs?

As to the comment up above about Stanford grads being quite entitled, I have to agree. Being at Harvard (Med) I see folks from a lot of top schools and folks from "The Farm" have, in my experience, been particularly dificult to deal with. I think this might be why people are particularly annoyed when the Stanford band does it, like the Cameron Crazies it plays into a broader narrative about the institution.

Alabama or Minnesota or UCLA (or we) want to give Iowa a little shit over being agricultural I really have no problem with it.  These however are the richest kids in the country going to one of the richest schools in the country.

I feel like Michgan's arrogance has a hint of tongue in cheek and is rooted in pride over the academics and athletics at a public universtiy.... The whole public Ivy thing.  Stanford's arrogance is rooted in being.... well... being entitled arrogant fucks.

I agree. I don't think the subject matter is that taboo, but seeing it done by the country's biggest collection of overpriviledged twerps just rubs some the wrong way. If I am honest, I have to admit that things other students can do freely will bug me if done by Stanford kids. I kind of think of them all as that famous "jalapeño mac and cheese" kid. If Indiana or Wisconsin did this, I probably wouldn't notice. Stanford does it, it seems like rich brats mocking farmers. Would someone get them off my lawn?
