OT: Incredible story of survival
In my own effort to help take back our board, I saw this story on TV this morning and saw it again online. Rob Konrad, former player for the Miami Dolphins, went fishing in his own boat last week. I won't summarize the story, I'll let you all read it. Its an incredible thing this guy went through to survive. As a former college swimmer, what this guy did was beyond amazing. Having been through AF survival school, they always preached the "will to survive" and this guy had an abundance of it. I am guessing that the mods ban him soon. It's obvious that he doesn't want to actually contribute anything to the community.

And yet feel compelled to comment on what is news here and what isn't? Hmmm, interesting.

is about 18 miles longer than the original story.
He swam from Jackson to Lansing in the middle of the damn night.

I saw this on the news, but it is still incredible to me - 16 hours and 27 miles AND, perhaps most maddeningly of all, twice he was nearly rescued. I would have to think that being a former athlete probably had a considerable role in the outcome here, not to mention what simply seems like the will to survive, as the OP mentioned.

While amazing, Konrad's experience pales in comparison to the story of Earnest Shackleton's attempt to cross Antarctica a century ago. Recommended reading:

Am I the only one who read that and thought it was almost criminally irresponsible for a man with two young daughters to go nine miles offshore, alone, without wearing a harness, personal locator beacon, lifevest (they make inflatable ones now that are barely noticeable) or whistle? Without even trailing a floating line to grab if he went overboard? These are basic solo sailing/boating precautions. Not to take anything away from the incredible will to survive and physical endurance Konrad displayed, but man...respect the sea.
