OT: I retired today.

Submitted by Lordfoul on

Yes, thanks to the University of Michigan, I met a wonderful woman that went on to become a doctor and allow me to quit being a bench-jockey chemist and follow my real dreams.*

So here's to her, and retirement at the age of 35.

*Currently to build a kick-ass Inn/Lodge on acreage by South Haven and serve up some killer trenchers of beef to clientele.

in sum, the story is:

your wife is making mid six-figures, so therefore, you've decided to forego your salary since it was merely discretionary income.  now, you're going to pursue a new venture (which is somewhat speculative, considering its a land-play in the leisure sector during the tail end of a recession).

i'm happy for you if that's your dream, but i don't think that's what i would call "retired."

the best retirement story that i heard was a friend of mine who was a portfolio manager at a fund.  he was fired during the recession, but received a nice golden parachute (left w/ approx. 20 mil in savings at the age of 36).  he met a girl, signed a pre-nup, got married, and the last i heard is that he's raising a family on the coast in the south of france.

You won't find my ass working, cooking, dealing with service issues. I'll be kicked back, feet in the sand, with a cool drink and my hot young wife on my right...deciding on what fresh seafood item we will enjoy that night.

You must have some serious game dude.  Good luck, and I hope you (successfully) fufill your dreams while making your wife a bit jealous of your sucess.  As a powerful sucessful female, she will appreciate your accomplishments all the more.

I too am graced by my better half, who also is a UM trained physician. We have a number of years of life in the rear view window compared to you. Turns out my wife is quickly getting burned out by the stress. And a surprisingly large number of her classmates have already left medicine, all burned out sooner. Just FYI, fwiw.

I'll never come close to that. But I when I got divorced last fall, I did go out and buy a 1965 Shelby AC Cobra replica (see avatar). So there's that.

Allow me to throw in my congratulations on what today is a very rare opportunity to do such a thing at 35, and that's coming from another 35 year-old. Do keep  us updated on the progress, because I deifnitely think you'll get some MGoBusiness. Cheers, and good luck with this!

Love this. 30 here and my Fiancée is very successful in the financial world. Once we the tie the knot, she wants me to quit what I'm doing and start a business that I enjoy.
