OT: G.O.A.T Singers

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on
Happy Weekend everyone! A few weeks back I did a G.O.A.T movies thread and I really enjoyed everyone’s responses. Out of boredom, I thought doing one on Singers would be fun. Criteria = Their songs do for you what you need them to do for you... that’s it because specific criteria would be to hard with crossing all the genres. Let’s do top 3 even though it is very hard. My top 3 in order are... 1. Elvis 2. Eminem 3. Johnny Cash. MJackson is great, but not a big fan so I left him out. Obviously he will be in many, but we all have different tastes so my list may seem weird and many of yours might as well, but hey that’s the fun part. Keep the criteria in mind and remember everyone has different tastes.

They don't have pure orthodox singing voices, but I love the vocals of Michael Stipe and of Eddie Vedder.

On the female side, I always liked Michelle Branch for the same reason.

Interesting voices.

Probably wouldn't consider him the best singer, but David Lee Roth is the best frontman of all time IMO.  I'll add Bruce Dickenson to the list here as well.

Seems you would really have to break this into categories / genre.

Layne Staley (their unplugged cd is in my top 5 of all time)
Roy Orbison
Whitney Houston

All should be added to the many great listings so far.

Some favorites of mine that I haven't seen listed (although I'm nodding with a lot of the ones I've read):

Paul Simon

Eric Carmen

Melissa Manchester

Yeah, I'm one of the old people on here.

To be fair, I'm assuming most of the posts are following the single criterion listed, which is that the music/singer/performer "does for you what you need them to do for you".  While GOAT is listed in the title, in most cases it isn't necessarily the most talented performer who fills a personal need.

The greats are great live. I love all types of music, rap to classical, but still come back to the popular classics.

An older Ella Fitzgerald still was on a different plant talent wise at Hill Auditorium in 1979.

Diana Ross returning to the Fox Theater, blocks from Cass Tech in a very emotional performance.

Barbara Streisand. Again past her prime but her voice was like buttah. Love this clip with Judy Garland (another legend, tragic). There is reallygood and then great.

Me.  You ever heard me karaoke?  I mean come on.

J/J, now for the real list.

1.  Paul McCartney.  He did it all really well across many styles of music.  Great range.

2.  Whitney Houston.  Not that her songs did anything specifically for me but I've always loved her singing voice.

3.  Elvis.  Duh.

4.  Bon Scott.  Best rock voice of all time, IMO.  Unique.

5.  Freddy Mercury.  Awesome.

6.  Chris Cornell.  Great singer.

7.  Stevie Wonder.  Another unique, great voice.

8.  Kelly Clarkson.  Certainly not the most accomplished on the list but has great pipes.

George Strait (boring ass concert though)
Axl Rose
Eddie Vedder
George Harrison
Dave Matthews
Elton John

I’m sure there are others I’m not thinking of...

Karen Carpenter, with her velvety voice, and Scott Weiland, my personal fave male voice. I also like Cat Stevens’ inimitable voice.

James Taylor. Buttery baritone - most folks only know his melancholy troubadour style, but he's got a voice that can do almost anything.

Fortunate enough to see him live, and is beyond incredible. Not too many I've seen that are "CD quality live...Chicago may have been the next closest in quality of live performance.

1. Chris Stapleton is amazing!

2. Adele -- For Real Though!

3. Adam Levine (Come on Now!)

(Bonus) Male:  Ronnie Van Zant

             Female: Carrie Underwood

Not one person seems to have mentioned Michael Jackson...at all?! From J5, to the 80s solo, and collaborations (ie. Paul McCartney)? Too many genres and eras to really narrow down a small list, but no King of Pop is crazy.

The conversation should have started and ended with Robert Plant for the men and Pat Benatar for the ladies. Anything else is being deliberatel;y obtuse.
