OT: G.O.A.T Singers

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on
Happy Weekend everyone! A few weeks back I did a G.O.A.T movies thread and I really enjoyed everyone’s responses. Out of boredom, I thought doing one on Singers would be fun. Criteria = Their songs do for you what you need them to do for you... that’s it because specific criteria would be to hard with crossing all the genres. Let’s do top 3 even though it is very hard. My top 3 in order are... 1. Elvis 2. Eminem 3. Johnny Cash. MJackson is great, but not a big fan so I left him out. Obviously he will be in many, but we all have different tastes so my list may seem weird and many of yours might as well, but hey that’s the fun part. Keep the criteria in mind and remember everyone has different tastes.

had the voice of an Angel. I really wasn't into that kind of music back in her day, but even then couldn't help but stop and listen any time a Carpenters song came on the radio. Another great female pure singing voice was that of Mama Cass Elliot. Like Karen Carpenter, though, gone too soon . RIP to both of them.

Robert Plant, Bono, Freddie Mercury, Whitney, Eric Clapton (better with the guitar, yeah, but I love his music)...  In no particular order.

Great selections throughout the thread. My 3 today which changes depending on the day. 1. Prince - love his versatility 2. Gord Downie - passion every single time 3. Jerry Garcia - works for me RIP to all 3

1. Freddie Mercury. Yeah, I'll go with the crowd on this one.

2. Carrie Underwood. You ever see that duet with Randy Travis where he's just like laughing at how good she is? Yeah.

3 tie. Edith Piaf. The female Frank Sinatra but 800 times better.

3 tie. Steve MF Perry. Arnel Pineda is excellent, but Perry is a legend.

3 tie. Meat Loaf. No one else could do Steinman like he could do Steinman, although Celine, Bonnie Tyler, and Jessica Hendy have given it a good run.

Honorable mentions: Maria Mckee, young Stevie Nicks, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Elvis, Daniela Mercury, Cyndi Lauper (you wouldn't be laughing if you ever heard her live).

Holy s*** no one has mentioned Stevie wonder. Easy way to play this game— check out the cover versions and see who comes close. How often do you hear people cover Stevie wonder? Not often because people would look damn silly. 2. Freddy 3. Aretha Pains me to leave prince off— as a musician he blows these 3 away, but his voice isn’t what made him great.

Jeff Buckley is the correct response, in my book. He did not leave all that deep of a songbook, but the early returns were off the charts good. His best album, Grace, is per se half-baked. But the baked bits are heavenly, ethereal.
