OT: Favorite Podcasts

Submitted by Maize and Luke on

Hey all.  Sorry if this topic has come up before but I don't remember seeing anything.  Recently I've become a podcast junky and can't get enough.  I'm always looking for the next "must listen to" podcast.  So my question to you is, what are your favorites?  Here are a couple of mine....

1. Sword and Scale:  If you like true crime this is the best I've come across.  Be warned though it is VERY graphic, some real sick stuff. (most are about 1hr long)

2. Lore:  As you may have guessed it's all about folk lore.  Some true through i.e. HH Holmes a UM alum. (on average about 20-30 minutes long)

3.  Criminal: More true crime but at different angle.  Different topics from different view points.  (on average about 20-30 minutes long)

4.  The Unresolved Podcast:  Based on unsolved mysteries.  A fairly new podcast.  Topics range from psychotic killers to folk lore. (wide range, 40-60 minutes long)

5. Serial:  If you podcast you've most surely heard of this one.  True crime into it's second season.  I recommend binge listening to this one.  A lot of in-depth info, too much to wait 2 weeks between episodes.

6. Radiolab: A WIDE range of topics.  They have a huge library of episodes, you'll surely find something that interests you.  Great research done by this team.

Those are my favorites.  What's yours??  I need more!  Must have more!

Kornheiser 's podcast is the only one I listen to. Good to know there are others on the board who enjoy this, as it is a departure from what most people see on TV (or maybe an extension beyond his 30 second takes with Wilbon). The jingles by the fans are brilliant by themselves.

I laughed at the thought of listening to Joe Rogan until I did. I will say that some episodes just aren't very good but when he has an interesting guest, which is often, it's outstanding .

I am big into podcast in general but I am a HUGE comedy podcast fan. Comedy Bang Bang is an amazing improvised comedy podcast with awesome comedians playing hilarious characters. Hollywood Handbook is probably the funniest show on the web right now. Too real life comedy writers play super over the top characters who are self proclaimed hollywood big shots. This one may take a bit to get into but dear god it's worth it.

What up, what up!

Completely agree, super hard to get into but it's totally worth it. Took me 3-4 episodes over a 6 month period before Hollywood Handbook clicked for me (I think it was the Kumail Nanjiani ep) and I haven't stopped listening since. I've relistned to some episodes at least a dozen times. Sean and Hayes-ism have slipped into my vocabulary and my quality of life has gone through the roof. Highly recommended.

CBB is pretty alright too. I give it a C+. U Talkin' U2 To me is great as well.

Stuff you Should Know - a shallow dive into an extraordinary range of topics

Girl on Guy - Aisha Tyler's podcast is pretty great

Star Talk - I like the ones with Bill Nye almost as much as NdGT

Nerdist - Katee Sackhoff is the all time best interview they ever did

SYSK for the win.  Want an overview of how the large Hadron collider works? SYSK.  Want to know about the time Nazis tried to invade Florida? SYSK. How about police interrogation? Or pine wood derby? Or Great Wall of China? Or Rodney Dangerfield? ... An awesome way to pass the time on a long drive.

History of England - the host is superb with his delivery and humor. History of English - the information has often made my jaw drop as I drive. It explains so much of why English is the way it is. Favorite fact: warranty and guarantee are the same word, same with ward and guard. One came from the Anglo/saxons, the other from the French. Same principle with William and Guillaume.

For cfb podcasts (other than the MGoPodcast): 1. The Shutdown Fullcast (EDSBS podcast) 2. The Solid Verbal (Dan and Ty, probably the best analysis you're going to get in podcast form) 3. Podcast Ain't Played Nobody (Bill Connelly's podcast)

Planet Money - Same as others

All Tech Considered - I love letting these 1-minute clips build up and then listening to them in succession. It's like listening to a news brodcast about the tech industry.

Hardcore History - Dan Carlin is great at this, although he can kind of go on some tangents

Common Sense - Dan Carlin's political news podcast

.NET Rocks - For the programmer in me

Mad Fientist - For ideas in financial planning

I love me some Tim Ferriss.

That and Bill Simmons and Cowherd, although Cowherd has been tougher to listen to with Whitlock on there. If I ever see Whitlock in the description I won't listen to the episode. He's just terrible. He tries to be a contrarian, but a contrarian to what other black guests would say not just a contrarian in general. That's his shtick on this show so I'm done bc I can predict his points on everything and he seems unintelligent to me.

My favorite podcast is a D&D pod called Drunks & Dragons.  The premise is 5 friends play D&D (which I have never played), but really devolves into 5 friends telling jokes and riffing off of each other.  It has the feel of just hanging out with a group of friends having a good time.  The same group do a Game of Thrones podcast that covers the books and the show which is pretty good too.  There are a couple other podcasts that are part of their little banner, but they are much more specific in their geekdom.

Risk has pretty entertainig stories in their catalogue, but have gotten more and more speciifc in their content as well as only certain tyes of story tellers seem to tell the same types of stories over and over.  It was much better when I picked it up 3 or so years ago, but still good for an occasional laugh now and then.

I loved Nerd Poker. Waiting patiently for the hiatus to end. It was Brian Posehn and some other comedians and writers playing Dungeons and Dragons.

I too have never played D&D, but love listening to funny people play it.

They have over 100 episodes out right now, but have recently started releasing abridged editions that are like 10-15 minutes so people can get caught up and get in on running jokes so they'll make sense when they hear something wild referenced like "kingdoms have been founded on this much gold" (a running gag throughout the podcast).  If you do, let me know what you think.

Bill Simmons

Carolla

Artie Quitter (Lange): This one just to be reminded of 00's Stern--I thought the peak of Stern's show was from 00-09 with lange.  Love artie and gilbert. Stern kind of sucks now.
