OT: Ever go to a non-UM bowl game?

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

So I happen to live in a city, Las Vegas, with a bowl game coming up later this month. Given the likely matchup, I'm sure loads of tickets will be available. I've never actually gone to a bowl game before. Has anyone gone to one in which Michigan wasn't involved and what was your experience like?

I've actually been to a couple bowls in Las Vegas, and it's been a mixed bag. I'm assuming it's still a PAC12-MWC matchup?

Boise State has been there so many times recently that the "hype" for playing there has been tempered with regards to their fans.

USC v. Fresno State a couple years ago was a decent atmosphere, but was during the middle of the day.

Can't recall the exact year, but happened to be down in Florida, and my best bud's Dad had free tickets to the Gator bowl which featured Georgia VS Sparty when they had the tool, Tony Mandrich, Lorenzo White etc.
We showed up in full Wolverine gear and actually had a great time rooting for Georgia. I do remember they were stacking giant pancakes on the sideline for every pancake Mandrich had, which was over 20.

KSU v ASU

I was in the Chargers owner's Skybox because they were trying to woo my buddy to buy a suite, rubbed elbows with some famous people from sports to politics so yes it was great!

Was fun when not played too late at night, and it's too cold.   The last Holiday bowl I went to was Wisky USC which was a good game, but because ESPN was doing it as the 4th game telecast of the day, it started too late on what happened to be one of the coldest nights of the year.  Was a little frustrating because it would have been way more pleasant as a day game.  Happy to note for the fans going they will play the Holiday Bowl earlier in the evening this year.

two of the holiday bowls were in the late 80's and early '90's and were barn burners.  went to another one in '02 also.

the '94 fiesta bowl was fun b/c it was the 'end' of the univ of miami gangster era and they got their heads handed to them by arizona, 29-0.

Stopped in Atlanta to watch FSU vs Houston on our way to Orlanda. Had a lot of fun. Was nice to enjoy a game without the nervousness of how your team will perform.

I've been to a couple at Motor City.   In 2007 I went to the now-defunct International Bowl in Toronto with some of my WMU buddies.   Watched a Brian Kelly-led Cincy beat WMU after he had already beat them with CMU earlier in the same year.    The Toronto trip was fun.

2008 Outback Iowa - South Carolina. 2009 Orange Bowl - Iowa - Georgia Tech. 35 fucking degrees at kickoff...in MIAMI. No beach that trip, was quite pissed. No pity from anyone nack home as 3 feet of snow was dumped on them. Good times. Miami is stupid expensive but we did it up. Tampa was fun as well; NYE in Ybor City.

I take my kids to the Belk Bowl (used to be Meineke bowl) here in Charlotte.  It's a tradition and a way for me to instill "this is the fun you get to have in college.  You really want to go there" into them.  That "go to college" is also the reason we trek to the Big House for a game each year.

Belk bowl is a blast.  They have a ton of things to do where you get free prizes and the kids have a blast.  These smaller bowls can be a great experience.

Bowl games are a great experience regardless of the level of the bowl. Went to a couple Motor City Bowls and Poinsettia Bowls...I'm excited for bowl season, and hoping OSU doesn't win shit. GoBlue

But I went to the Regional Final in 94 in Knoxville between Purdue & Duke in basketball.  Sat in the section that would've had whatever team got beat in the Elite 8 and went cause my sister had a connection at UT and got us tickets.

Highlight of the game was near the end when it was clear Duke was going to win.  Purdue that year was led by Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson and as the game entered its final minutes the Duke students raiseda huge banner reading "Lassie go home".

Go - you'll have fun.

Went to the TaxSlayer bowl last year in JAX for something to do. Was fun not really caring about who wins, sitting in a seatback chair, and enjoying decent weather. Cool to see the bands etc...

Dale Earnhart JR came out in his car to start off the game lol.

back in 1997 when I was just a little MGoChippewa. KState vs. Donovan McNabb and Syracuse. Remember having a great time. Also saw CMU-FAU in the Motor City Bowl, also a good time. If the bowl in Vegas gets even a decent matchup, I'd say you should go.

Went to the TCU vs. Ole Miss Peach Bowl a couple of years ago and had a really fun time. If you like college football, you're going to like pretty much any game you go to, so go for it.

Las Vegan here, too. Went to the Las Vegas bowl about a decade back. I think it was UCLA v Wyoming. Left around halftime. No hype, no excitement, stands were half full, if that. I only went because I got the tickets for free.

I go to the Outback Bowl because I live within am hours drive. It's always fun at Ray J. Tailgate in beautiful weather and drink my face off at the Pirate Ship. Last year I spoke at length with Kirkland's (UT Vols) father at length. Really nice man and very proud of his son. I told him he made a bad choice and should have chosen M...he just smiled. It's a lot of fun to just be a fan for a day, regardless of the out come. I recommend it, plus it supports kids who give all they have for a sport we love. Go Blue!

As denoted by my name, I'm from Vegas as well. This year could be a little different without a PAC 12 team, but they were pretty packed when BYU was in the game. The winds of December get Sam Boyd swirling. 2009 was hilarious because they only punted twice netting 6 yards.

The 2011 Belk bowl b/w my wife's alma mater NC State and Louisville. The Wolfpack chased around and thumped a freshman Teddy Bridgewater pretty good in that game and survived in a close win. Good game! The 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl b/w Va Tech and our bitter rival Rutgers in what turned out to be a rain soaked "who wants it less?" sort of game. Went in support of a good friend who's at VT grad, and free tickets, so yeah. The 2015 Citrus Bowl b/w Minnesota and Missouri for no other reason than I came by free tickets again. Meh game, but great tailgate before hand. Edit: almost forgot the 2003 Motor City Bowl b/ my hometown BGSU falcons and Northwestern. This was a great game where NW got out to an early lead, but BG came back to win it in the 4th.

I've been to a few Poinsettia/Holiday bowls based on convenience (I live in San Diego) and free tix. Also went to the Oregon-Ohio State Rose Bowl in 2010 with a buddy who is huge ducks fan. I went decked out in my Michigan gear and took some heat from the buckeyes but still a great environment and time.

Ohio St. vs. USC.  I was working in San Diego and my Dad (grew up in Ohio liking OSU) was working a lot on the West Coast with his company.  There were a bunch of Ohio State grads working in our company's facilities department, and I thought it would be nice to take my Dad to see the Rose Bowl since he had never been to one.  So, I got a few tickets through these co-workers.  We sat in the Ohio section and my Dad, having no other jacket to wear, wore his Michigan one.  Right away, we took a lot of crap from the Buckeye fans, but fortunately it was good-natured.  Ohio lost the game.  I don't remember much other than Keith Byers playing at RB for OSU.

As a side note, my wife and I had already gone to the Holiday Bowl that season in December in San Diego where we watched Michigan lose to BYU.  Jim Harbaugh was on the sidelines wearing a cast on his broken arm.

I've been to a few, but I have had some kind of rooting interest.  The latest one I went to was the Alabama beat down of Sparty, since Dallas is about a 3.5 hour for me, and it was a Christmas gift for the Sparty daughter.  The hardest part was pretending I wasn't happy to see Alabama demolish the Spartans, especially since they had basically lucked their way into the playoff.

I went to the 1986 Orange Bowl.  I was in South Florida and we were in the Fiesta Bowl that year.  We watched the Fiesta Bowl and then went to Miami during the Rose Bowl.  Game was fun.  It had national championship implications.

I also stopped by the Boca Raton Bowl last year because I was there but we had dinner plans, it was raining and my family had no interest in going or to the game or accommodating my desire to go.
