OT-The End of South Park?

Submitted by cp4three2 on

Who else watched that tonight?  I couldn't find anything online confirming or denying.  But it seemed like the only way they could end the show.

Yeah that's what I thought as well so I did a little digging on the interwebs and found that Matt and Trey's contract is up after this season so it makes a lot of sense that this will be their last season.

yeah, it sure seems like Matt and Trey are pulling out as they know the epiodes are the same shit every week. They have had a great run and don't want to pull a Simpsons.

Or hollywood could come up with a new idea.  I don't want to see a new Spiderman when Spiderman was just rebooted less than 10 years ago.  Same for the Incredible Hulk.  No need to revisit that every 4 years because the first movie was terrible.

I can understand why Fox has kept it going, but I'm disappointed that Matt Groening didn't decide to stop.  The guy must be fabulously wealthy from the show, and gets money from all the syndication (not to mention DVD sales).  I seem to recall him saying at one time that he didn't want it to be like the Flinstones and other series that went on way too long (and they even spoofed the little green alien character once), but he's done the same.

King of the Hill also went on too long.  I love the first seven or so seasons, but the last few were mediocre at best.

Riddle: how do you know you are getting old? Answer: you don't know what the popular music is and you DON'T care.

Matt and Trey have been moving away slowly from their TV show - and maybe this will be it.

Hope to live long enough to see what comes after rap music - love to see the kids of today grouse about the "awful" music of their kids.

This WAS the mid-season finale. After doing some of my own digging. I found the contract is up after 7 more episodes. After that, who knows

I was thinking about how the end of South Park is probably going to be crazy.  But, after watching tonight, it seemed perfectly like the writers to make their final episode out of the blue and kind of shock the viewers (and probably Comedy Central.

They might be under contract, but that doens't necessarily mean they can't just up and quit.  Hopefully there's still a few more left.

In any event, I am actually glad to see that this movie might not be so awful as the previews made it out to be. I very much enjoyed the first two X-Men movies -- thought the second one was especially well done -- didn't care much for the third, and the Wolverine movie, well...let's just pretend that never happened...

Stan has always been either Matt or Trey, I forget. Kyle is the other one. Maybe one is staying and one is leaving the show. Maybe I'm high.

Okay, I saw the episode, and that ending was kind of awkward. I think it looks like one of those two-parter episodes, they'll continue with part two in the fall.

I don't think SP would just up and quit randomly without fair warning. Hoping they stay on, they've been able to keep good comedy going this season. Favorites were TMI and the CBAA.

This season has been subpar at best for them, but this episode will probably continued with the first of the next half season...a lesson is learned by stan on how to view life. I really don't think that Trey has become a cynic

The thing I love the most about South Park is they could have made an episode like this just to get people to over analyze it, when really it could have meant nothing at all.

Since they're signed through 2013 my hope is that this is a sign of things to come.  They could be going in a brand new direction with the show, and taking a chance with the show instead of running the risk of becoming The Simpsons of the last 8-10 years.

This may be way off, but here is a very good read on the subject

The fake movie trailers were great

"Rated Arg for Pirates: Fuck you."

On a serious note, I will be sad to see South Park go, but as others noted, I do not want to see it go the way of the Simpsons where it's the same shit.

I think people are too rough on modern day Simpsons episodes.  The style of comedy has changed, but I still have enjoyed a lot of the episodes.  I do agree with the notion that the their "batting average" of good vs. bad has went down, but I mean that doesn't make the good episodes bad.  I mean I would call a few from the last couple seasons as some of their best episodes ever and I'm obsessed with the show.  I think the big thing is the comedic shift from the earlier years, but it's bound to happen when you bring in new writers.

I agree.  Some of the new episodes are classics, and I am surprised so many watchers have strayed, especially people that watched every episode for years.  I see it more as complacency of viewership than a downturn of the show.  I think The Simpsons is still the best show on the major networks, and every episode still has value and charm.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is the last season.  This latest series of episodes came out late, and they really phoned it in.  The episodes have been really hit-or-miss the last few years and the messages in them have been more ham-fisted.
