OT-The End of South Park?
Who else watched that tonight? I couldn't find anything online confirming or denying. But it seemed like the only way they could end the show.
Yeah that's what I thought as well so I did a little digging on the interwebs and found that Matt and Trey's contract is up after this season so it makes a lot of sense that this will be their last season.
the characters and possibly a new direction for the show, though they are only contracted through 2011. I think this season just started so kind of early for a last episode.
I missed this week's episode, but on the website it says it's the "mid-season finale", whatever that means.
That makes sense. I wasn't aware that they did it that way.
And I was hoping for a South Park parody of Tressell/Pryor :(
yeah, it sure seems like Matt and Trey are pulling out as they know the epiodes are the same shit every week. They have had a great run and don't want to pull a Simpsons.
oh man, the simpsons are really bad now, I watched a newer episode (from this past season I think) the other day and it made me sad to see how bad it is.
The Simpsons should have had the plug pulled a good decade ago. Seriously. In its prime it was amazing, but at this point, I think there are more bad/mediocre episodes in its 20-odd year run than good ones. Sad.
along they don't pull the plug on anything.
Ie. Movies with 3+ sequels or Ashton Kutcher replacing Sheen on that show I have never watched.
Exactly. Right now I am glad x men and spiderman are getting reboots. Rebooting a franchise worked for batman. X men first class is already darker than any of the previous movies. I have not seen pirates 4, but I heard it was awful.
Or hollywood could come up with a new idea. I don't want to see a new Spiderman when Spiderman was just rebooted less than 10 years ago. Same for the Incredible Hulk. No need to revisit that every 4 years because the first movie was terrible.
Men, men, men, men, men manly men, men, men.
one too many men there.
Oops...looks like I need to hit FX this weekend. That show is so frickin bad. My roommates and I used to laugh about it, and one of my roommates does a perfect mimic of their "Meeeeeeen" line, which he would use at perfectly random times. God it was funny.
I can understand why Fox has kept it going, but I'm disappointed that Matt Groening didn't decide to stop. The guy must be fabulously wealthy from the show, and gets money from all the syndication (not to mention DVD sales). I seem to recall him saying at one time that he didn't want it to be like the Flinstones and other series that went on way too long (and they even spoofed the little green alien character once), but he's done the same.
King of the Hill also went on too long. I love the first seven or so seasons, but the last few were mediocre at best.
Alan Alda started making $200,000 per week on MASH back in 1980. That seems like an insane amount of money for TV in that time.

(I was watching an old DVD of the West Wing and looked up Alan Alda's IMDB Info)
Not to mention that the subject material seemed to be a critique of the creative process in American pop culture. I thought it was brilliant, given South Park's long and storied history of using feces as a prop to discuss broader issues.
Riddle: how do you know you are getting old? Answer: you don't know what the popular music is and you DON'T care.
Matt and Trey have been moving away slowly from their TV show - and maybe this will be it.
Hope to live long enough to see what comes after rap music - love to see the kids of today grouse about the "awful" music of their kids.
I just know I won't like it, so... GET OFF MY LAWN!!
Ehh, I'm young enough to qualify as a kid, and there's some rap that's absolutely horrible and some rap that I like a lot. Lots of the mainstream stuff on top forty radio stations and whatnot is unbearable, but there's good stuff out there.
but I don't know if you could say that not all rap is terrible. An album such as Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest includes one of the greatest bassist of all time, Ron Carter. Not everyone might like it, but it really is a great listen.

it may seem odd at first but this stuff is really catchy
Haaaa. I am a dubstep fan as well and I really thought that the episode was poking fun at it. Really funny shit (literally).
This WAS the mid-season finale. After doing some of my own digging. I found the contract is up after 7 more episodes. After that, who knows
I was thinking about how the end of South Park is probably going to be crazy. But, after watching tonight, it seemed perfectly like the writers to make their final episode out of the blue and kind of shock the viewers (and probably Comedy Central.
They might be under contract, but that doens't necessarily mean they can't just up and quit. Hopefully there's still a few more left.
I missed tonight's episode. Can anyone fill me in on what went down? Thanks
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
I agree with the above poster. It was pretty shitty.
"I won't say a word." -XMen First Class- "Oh shit."
X men first class is by fat the best super hero movie since the dark knight.
Cartman reference?
Stupid iPhone autocorrect.
In any event, I am actually glad to see that this movie might not be so awful as the previews made it out to be. I very much enjoyed the first two X-Men movies -- thought the second one was especially well done -- didn't care much for the third, and the Wolverine movie, well...let's just pretend that never happened...
Idk, I would be sad if it ended...even though it has been weaker the last couple of seasons, it is still the best thing on TV.
Stan = Trey and Kyle = Matt.
Given Trey is the real creative force, or at the very least voices 90% of the show's characters, I can't see Matt running things by himself. Plus, far as I know, they only work together.
Okay, I saw the episode, and that ending was kind of awkward. I think it looks like one of those two-parter episodes, they'll continue with part two in the fall.
I don't think SP would just up and quit randomly without fair warning. Hoping they stay on, they've been able to keep good comedy going this season. Favorites were TMI and the CBAA.
This season has been subpar at best for them, but this episode will probably continued with the first of the next half season...a lesson is learned by stan on how to view life. I really don't think that Trey has become a cynic
I hope Stan finds his way, and realizes that not everything is shit. Well, except for Ohio State, Notre Dame, MIchigan State...etc.
The thing I love the most about South Park is they could have made an episode like this just to get people to over analyze it, when really it could have meant nothing at all.
Since they're signed through 2013 my hope is that this is a sign of things to come. They could be going in a brand new direction with the show, and taking a chance with the show instead of running the risk of becoming The Simpsons of the last 8-10 years.
This may be way off, but here is a very good read on the subject
Says this is part on of a two part episode:
This is the mid-season finale of season 15. This the first of a two-part episode.
Not the end, their web site clearly shows a complete second half to the season starting in October
The fake movie trailers were great
"Rated Arg for Pirates: Fuck you."
On a serious note, I will be sad to see South Park go, but as others noted, I do not want to see it go the way of the Simpsons where it's the same shit.
I think people are too rough on modern day Simpsons episodes. The style of comedy has changed, but I still have enjoyed a lot of the episodes. I do agree with the notion that the their "batting average" of good vs. bad has went down, but I mean that doesn't make the good episodes bad. I mean I would call a few from the last couple seasons as some of their best episodes ever and I'm obsessed with the show. I think the big thing is the comedic shift from the earlier years, but it's bound to happen when you bring in new writers.
I agree. Some of the new episodes are classics, and I am surprised so many watchers have strayed, especially people that watched every episode for years. I see it more as complacency of viewership than a downturn of the show. I think The Simpsons is still the best show on the major networks, and every episode still has value and charm.
The Simpsons has stepped their game up in recent seasons. As long as they keep the same voice actors on staff the show is reasonably viable.
When they turned Lu Kim into Dr Janus it really depressed me. I wanted him to be an actual chinese guy!
It wouldn't surprise me if this is the last season. This latest series of episodes came out late, and they really phoned it in. The episodes have been really hit-or-miss the last few years and the messages in them have been more ham-fisted.
