OT: End of Drew and Mike on 101WRIF
Hey guys, today marked the last live broadcast of 'The Drew and Mike Show' on 101WRIF. I lived in Ann Arbor for about 12yrs and moved back to Houston May of last year. I know they have a strong following and they have been on the air for longer than 20yrs.
When I decided to move, I moved by myself, and without my family. Plan was to move to Houston (since I have all my family here) and then move my family maybe in 3-4 months. Well...things didn't go as planned and Texas was not good to us. It took me about 6-7 months to find the right job. Still currently clawing my way out of debt and saving everything I can to get my family down here.
Thing is I would listen to Drew and Mike every morning here in Houston with the app on my phone and it made me think of home and my family. Not to mention they were damn hysterical. I would drive my kids to school every morning and listen to those guys. I was always hoping Drew and Mike didn't make me turn the radio off due to the content LOL. No matter what, I always dropped my kids off, then back on they came!
Anyways, I just wanted to share this with my MGOBLOG family. This makes me sad and now makes my wait for my family that much harder. I love Michigan and I love Ann Arbor, if it wasn't for lack of family support in Ann Arbor I would still be there! Anywho, GO BLUE and here's to the best damn univeristy and town in the country! Drew and Mike will be forever missed!
Now if only Sean & Droo (It Is What It Is in GR on 96.1) would get the boot. It's pretty bad when HUGE is the best sports option in GR. Brutal.
Sean and Droo are bad but Huge is still worse. He is just awful. I have not listened to Huge in a long time. I don't understand how he is still on the air.
I do think Sean has all-around good sports knowledge and is fairly objective about college sports even for being a Sparty fan. My problem is him spending all this time trying to constantly prove that he isn't a Sparty slappy and try to imitate these people he claims that call him a Sparty slappy. Who exactly is saying this stuff about you, Sean? Just kind of annoying sometimes, although I like that he sticks on topic of sports topics I'm usually pretty interested in hearing about. I'm not going to lie in that I think "The Skip" is pretty damn funny even though it can get repetative. I have to laugh whenever he talks about ciggarates. The Lou Holtz stuff is funny maybe once a year before the Michigan-ND game but otherwise it gets real old. They tried to do Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne last month and it was just awful and completely unfunny.
The Huge...the guy is obviously a grade-A blowhard. I think he does have a good radio voice, though, and is a good interviewer. His rants about the Lions sucking are hilarious and I love it when he rips on OSU. He just needs to grow up a bit. When someone calls him a bad name, he gives them more incentive for someone to do it again by talking about it on the air for an hour.
I always forget their names, but I really like the "sub" guy on The Huge Show that subs in when Bill is on vacation. I think he was on today actually. He's probably my favorite radio voice locally.
Then there's Bently...that guy is a grade-A goofball. He strikes me as a guy struck in the 1980s. He is always talking about Dr B and his age-clinic every damn minute it seems like. That being all said, he can be quite entertaining and I like his co-host.
Ray Bentley is epically bad on the radio. I would rather dig my ear drums out with a spoon. Huge is pretty terrible but I would tune in any day if it got Bentley off the air.
Bentley does have an obnoxious voice lol. Almost worse than Seans.
Dave and Chuck the Freak rumored to replace them, correct? If so, I am a happy mgoblogger. I have been having withdrawls for months...
Agreement
Definitely agree. Love Dave and Chuck. This has been in the works for awhile -- they actually quit 89X for an undisclosed gig that paid more... must've been this one.
With all due respect, good riddance.
My bad. I take this comment back. I mistook these guys for some other guys. Baby woke up at 5AM this morning...
please
Good stuff. I always loved when they talked with Mickey Redmond. I always liked their Harris Polls too. Hopefully they find a gig locally.
...they already have another gig lined up. To be announced shortly?
probably 89x.
/s
That would be fantastic
It was a good show but the drops were even better. You can't replace legends like Drew and Mike with 89X rejects. So long morning radio in Detroit until Drew and Mike find another gig.
Man, Drew and Mike were awesome. Haven't listened in a few years due to living in Cali and Texas, but they were always funny.
Anybody know why? Did they just retire from it or what?
My Dad said it's likely because of how much money they make.
...is correct.
Dave and Chuck will probably deliver somewhat similar ratings...at a fraction of D & M's salaries.
Lower cost = increased profit margin.
They kill so many companies. Content turns to shit, loyal people have left, audience drops and you can't afford operations. Your sales team then can't blow enough sunshine and you are out on your ass. They rarely account for emotion, because they can't (but think they can).
They weren't renewed
other times it's demographics. Radio stations are always messing around with their target markets. I've seen them change formats literally overnight with no warning. Maybe Drew and Mike were not appealing enough to a younger demographic the station wanted to try and target. Who knows? I kind of liked listening to them because they went far enough back to relate to a lot of things I do. I'm sure they'll find a new local gig. Drew is actually pretty well-informed on sports and could probably host a sports talk show if he wanted.
Funniest morning show out of anywhere I've lived. Only show I've sat in my car and waited for the segment to end before going where I'm going. Hope to see them back somewhere. Favorite guest: Robert Porcher.
Best guest of all time was Michael Jackson after he died.
Maybe all the old clips they played this past week will serve as a reminder for them of how great they once were. It's been a long time since they produced any original material. Hopefully they'll have a chip on their shoulder from bot being renewed and come back stronger than ever.
Although I listened semi-frequently, I'd find myself taking long breaks because I could not listen to Mike any longer. He was the weak link on that show, and IMO, probably the reason why the two cut loose. You can only fart into a mic so many times. And his questions during interviews were painful to listen to. The only thing I enjoyed about him was his Sparty schadenfreude.
I hope it's the Drew and Mike on Leave show if/when it gets picked up.
Does anyone know if their last segment is available to listen to?
I'd like to hear what they had to say during their final sign-off.
Geez, WRIF.com has already deleted everything re: D&M....
No time to let the corpse cool off, got a business to run.
Some of the old segments they played today were my favorites. The "KramerBlows" and "BelfourBlows" are classic.
My mornings are now reduced to listenting to my own music, which isn't bad mind you, but makes for a longer day.
Thank goodness I've been on the Sirius train since Stern moved over. When I do flip on regular radio it really is a mere shell of what it used to be.
Cognitive Disonance: railing against the corporate radio machine while paying a monthly subscription to SiriusXM.
Sirius provides me a service that radio will not, and I pay for it. Just like regular tv and hbo.
Regular radio still has the same reach and money it always has. They are just choosing to attempt to make more and trim costs by squeezing talent, like Drew and Mike, instead of getting better at what they do. The mass consolidation by the major radio groups like clear channel has severely hurt the content and quality of the offering.
Good.
Good luck with the move. I'm sure things will improve.
Second, the days of TC / Emerson Fittipaldi used to make me laugh until I cried.
Third, I love reading News (never Freep) articles about the lineup change and the constant references to Chuck "The Freak". They can't call him Chuck; it's always Chuck "The Freak", with the latter part in quotes.
I only listened to their show during the times that Drew and Mike were on commercials, so I don't have an ainformed opinion of the guy, but....
With a nickname like "The Freak" that you have people refer to you as, you just scream douchebag. Maybe I'm wrong.
Mr Stress, Sid Disabled and Bruce Martyr, Meet the Bruiser. I still have my DREAD card.
Did his Mr. Stress character pre-date Drew and Mike?
